[Chapter 3

RESULTS

The data that are useful in conducting this study were gathered through

taking pictures of vandalism on the chairs among the sections of Grade 7 in

public schools under regular classes within the municipality of Sto. Tomas.

In addition, this study is anchored with three (3) research questions that is

answered with the 50+1 pictures that were taken in public schools of Sto.

Tomas together with the related studies and citations that supports in

analyzing this study to come up with the results.

The pictures were thoroughly divided according to their linguistic

feature. We adopted the process of numeration in determining the thematic

statements. Numeration is the number of times a specific thematic statements

or emergent themes occur in the transcripts (Smtih et al., 2009).

Moreover, this part of this study provides details of content analysis to

answer the three (3) research questions.

Research question No. 1: What are the linguistic features of vandalism of the

Grade 7 students?

Linguistic feature is a broad term used to denote the structure of a

word, phrase, sentence or even symbols, and giving meaning on those

structures. It serves as the grammatical characteristic that conveys meaning

for a successful communication.

The table below shows the linguistic features of vandalism of the Grade

7 students on their chairs. The researchers analyzed the vandals of the

students and identified their respective linguistic features.

4. Phrase

5. Interjection
Content word. This is one of the linguistic features generated from research

question number 1. Content words are words that name objects of reality and

their qualities. They signify actual living things like animals (e.g., dog, cat,

etc.), persons (mother, father, sister, etc.), and natural phenomena (sun,

snow, etc.). The picture shown below is an example of Content word.

Fig. 1. This vandal is an example of Content

Word because it denotes a name of a female person.

Another two pictures with a content word are shown below.

Attributive Adjective. The second linguistic feature spawned in the

research question number 1 is the Attributive Adjective. An Attributive

adjective is a word that comes before the noun (name of a person, thing, place,
an event, or an animal) it describes. The second picture shown on the table

above is an example of an Attributive Adjective because the word “Atchup”

describes the name of a male person “Edmar”. Atchup in English translation

means awesome, remarkable, or amazing. So, to transcribe in English

language, the phrase “Atchup Edmar” becomes “Awesome Edmar” or

“Remarkable Edmar” or “Amazing Edmar”.

Synecdoche. Another linguistic feature produced in the research

question number 1 is Synecdoche. This linguistic feature has the semantic

property of representing an associated word with the exact term of a particular

object. For example, the word “Kleenex” is the term used to connote facial

tissue. The word “Kleenex” is actually a name of a product. It is used to mean

a facial tissue when buying on a drug store. People used these types of words

for memory purposes. Similar with the table shown above, the vandalized

word “Waling2X (Waling-waling)” on the chair is an example of Synecdoche

because it is a word associated with the Grade 7 section Waling-waling in Sto.

Tomas National High School. The term “Waling2X (Waling-waling)” connotes

that the chair is owned by the Grade 7 section Waling-waling from Sto. Tomas

National High School.

Phrase. Next to Synecdoche, another linguistic feature breeds from the

research question number 1 is called Phrase. A Phrase is used to denote

expressions that are larger (in number of words) than a word. So, the

vandalized chair (see picture number 4 of Table 1 above) with words “Logronio

love Bongcac” is a phrase since there are three words found on the chair.
Interjection. Lastly, the linguistic feature bring about by the research

question number 1 is the Interjection. This linguistic feature has the property

to denote reactions (e.g., Wow!; Alas!; Yuck!; etc.) on a particular object

perceived by someone, and is usually paired with an exclamatory point

punctuation. Likewise, the picture that we can see on the table shown above

has a vandal of an Interjection.

Research question No. 2: What are the themes emerged?

Research question No. 3: How does these themes relate to the experiences of

the students?

Students often do not think wisely before they take an action. They become the attention
seekers who rebel in society most particularly in school premises in order to be noticed and
recognized. Others can be mentally ill and unable to control their own actions. The worst thing is
when students do it just for fun without thinking that the smallest act of vandalism can cause a
lasting effect on people who surround you.

In addition, young people usually tend to follow the bad behavior of their peers proving that
they are independent and can do almost anything. They do not have strong principles inside
themselves so they are ready to do anything that is considered to be cool among their friends.
Moreover, the majority of these teenagers believe that they do the right things. They can also do
the acts of vandalism in order to get back their parents` attention who are always busy with their
work and household chores and just do not care for their children and do not give them enough
affection. Vandalism can be really harmful for the community if we do not prevent it from
happening. Every act of vandalism should be handled in a serious manner.
