CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY

Social media is now a major source of news and information, and there’s no going back
from here. Most of the people know what the social media is but not all of them are fully aware
the impact it gives to the people and society. The advancements of the technology has create
lots of platform for social media. This enable people to use it in a variety ways such as create
content, interact with others, sharing information and even sharing their own lifestyle.

Picture 1.1: List of social media networking sites (Top best listed, 2016).

There are over 3 billion people using social media, and the number increases every year
(Smart Insights, 2019). Every second, there are 11 new people that use social media for the first
time (Skyword, 2018). Furthermore, current generation grow up environments are influence by
the social media resulting to the increase of usage among the teenagers.
However, on the other hand it has also affected the society in the negative way. Just like
anything which can be used for both good and bad, social media have also provided the
negative and positive ways for the people. It is all about the usage and getting things done
positively by using the power of social media. It is in the hands of the user to use to its
advantage. But willingly or unwillingly it can still have negative impacts on the users
(Techmaish, 2016).

In addition, although there has been an increase in communication, it is not necessarily

the healthiest way. Many users today have become addicted to social media, resulting in more
people isolating themselves from society. It is important to know the negative impacts social
media has in today’s society (Odyssey, 2017).

1.2 PROBLEM STATEMENT

In spite of the fact that social media is a great tool for information but have been misused by
people at large. This technology is doing more harm than good. Social media is not only
misused or abused by students but are also by businessmen, employees, etc. While talking
about the abuse, politics comes into mind. Social media is as prone to misuse as your
computer is to the virus (thesundayindian.com, 2012). Justice Katju stated in the letter to the
broadcasting ministry that a new practice has been started to defame people, community,
religion, etc. through social media.

Some misuses that are associated with the social media are:

 Defamation: The most affected people through social media are politicians and
celebrities. They are the breed which has been punished brutally by social media.
People got another medium to express their anger and to defame them through
tweeting or by other social networking sites. The click of the like button on the
Facebook can lead your action as absurd, and this can make you liable for the crime
of social media abuse.
 False and unreliable information: Apart from defamation, there is increasing misuse
of the social networking sites. People make fake email accounts of celebrities and
spread untrue stories about them. In fact, people hack the accounts of different users
at homes and “accessing the private life of others, leading to the relationship woes
and divorce (thesundayindian.com, 2012).”
 Cyberbullying: Cyberbullying is the act of bullying by harming or harassing using
electronic technology. There are many ways of cyber bullying but the most common
way to bully a person is to add users to the bullies account and begins to bully in the
way of harassing the user through teasing, derogatory remarks, etc. The other way to
bully a person is to write defamatory remarks on Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, etc.
bullies on the internet are less likely to get into trouble as there can be fake name and
picture on the bullies on the playground.
 Loss of Privacy: Social media can easily be misused by employees. The employees
make awful remarks and post inappropriate material in anger if the employer is over-
reacted and dismiss the employees. Even the employees’ comments damage the
reputation of the company so disciplinary action can be taken against the employees
for the breach of social media policy. When it is clear that the employers are becoming
aware of these situations, then it is not possible for the employees to complain that
the material was private and is infringing their right to privacy. The survey was held,
and it showed the area where misuse of social media had taken place:
o Firstly, misuse of confidential information (80%)
o Secondly, misrepresenting views of the employer (71%)
o Thirdly, inappropriate non-business use (67%)
o Fourthly, disparaging remarks about the employers or other employees (64%)
o Fifthly, harassment (64%)

Further, in 2012, the misuse of social media came to the attention of government when
the morphed videos and picture of an earthquake began to go viral. “Miscreants were
morphing these images to show that these were Muslim victims of civil riots in Assam and
Burma.” (mapsofindia.com, 2015). This was done to provoke the riots by vested interest. This
provocation leads to hate and revenge messages against Hindu Migrants.
1.3 OBJECTIVE

1.3.1 To identify the importance of social media among public

1.3.2 To identify the negative effect of social media among public

1.3.3 To identify the solution to overcome the abuse of social media among public

1.3.4 To study on how other country overcome the abuse of social media among public

1.4 OPERATION DEFINITION OF TERMS

1.4.1 Internet

The internet is a globally connected network system that uses TCP/IP to transmit
data via various types of media. The internet is a network of global exchanges – including
private, public, business, academic and government networks – connected by guided,
wireless and fibre-optic technologies.

Terms internet and World Wide Web are often used interchangeably, but they
are not exactly the same thing; the internet refers to the global communication system,
including hardware and infrastructure, while the web is one of the services
communicated over the internet.

As computing advanced, peer-to-peer (P2P) communication was gradually

delivered and enhanced. Since the 1990s, the internet has greatly influenced and
upgraded networking to global standards. Billions of internet users rely on multiple
application and networking technologies, including:

Internet Protocol (IP): The internet’s primary component and communications

backbone. Because the internet is comprised of hardware and software layers, the IP
communication standard is used to address schemes and identify unique connected
devices. Prominent IP versions used for communications include Internet Protocol version
4 (IPv4) and Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6).
Communications: The internet is the most cost-effective communications method
in the world, in which the following services are instantly available:

 Email
 Web-enabled audio/video conferencing services
 Online movies and gaming
 Data transfer/file-sharing, often through File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
 Instant messaging
 Internet forums
 Social networking
 Online shopping
 Financial services

The internet originated with the U.S. government, which began building a computer network in
the 1960s known as ARPANET. In 1985, the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) commissioned
the development of a university network backbone called NSFNET. The system was replaced by
new networks operated by commercial internet service providers in 1995. The internet was
brought to the public on a larger scale at around this time. (Techopedia, 2019)

1.4.2 Social Media

Social media is the collective of online communications channels dedicated to

community-based input, interaction, content-sharing and collaboration. Websites and
applications dedicated to forums, microblogging, social networking, social bookmarking, social
curation, and wikis are among the different types of social media.

On the other hand, the integration of social media in the business world can also pose
challenges. Social media policies are designed to set expectations for appropriate behavior and
ensure that an employee's posts will not expose the company to legal problems or public
embarrassment. Such policies include directives for when an employee should identify himself
as a representative of the company on a social networking website, as well as rules for what types
of information can be shared (Tech Target, 2019)
1.4.3 Technology

Technology is a body of knowledge devoted to creating tools, processing actions and the
extracting of materials. The term ‘Technology” is wide, and everyone has their way of
understanding its meaning. We use technology to accomplish various tasks in our daily lives, in
brief; we can describe technology as products and processes used to simplify our daily lives. We
use technology to extend our abilities, making people the most crucial part of any technological
system.

Technology is also an application of science used to solve problems. But it is vital to know
that technology and science are different subjects which work hand-in-hand to accomplish
specific tasks or solve problems.

We apply technology in almost everything we do in our daily lives; we use technology at

work, we use technology for communication, transportation, learning, manufacturing, securing
data, scaling businesses and so much more. Technology is human knowledge which involves
tools, materials, and systems. The application of technology typically results in products. If
technology is well applied, it benefits humans, but the opposite is true, if used for malicious
reasons.

Many businesses are using technology to stay competitive, they create new products and
services using technology, and they also use technology to deliver those products and services to
their customers on time and within budget. A good example is mobile phones companies like
Apple & Samsung, these mobile empires, use high-end technology to create new smartphones
and other electronic devices to stay competitive. This competitive edge is gained through
employing advanced technology. (Use of Technology, 2017).
