ASSIGNMENT-1
Which one has the highest ultimate gas recovery water drive reservoirs or depletion
drive reservoirs?
Answer: Recovery from water-drive gas reservoirs is substantially less than recovery from
depletion drive reservoirs. Since in depletion drive reservoirs expansion is the main factor
that is why ultimate gas recovery is independent of production rate. Hydrocarbon pore
volume remains constant (Sgr does not change ) only the no moles occupying the pore space
are reduced so it is necessary to reduce the abandonment pressure to the lowest possible value
in order to achieve ultimate recovery of gas.
In water-drive reservoir production rate has two possible influences on ultimate recovery.
a. In active water-drive reservoir the no of pounds of gas left in the pore space are
relatively high because in immiscible displacement of one fluid by other it is
impossible to displace all of the fluid from every pore space. The residual gas
saturation is relatively higher of the order of 30-50% of the pore volume and
independent of the pressure the by using real gas law
P Sg = ZRT
For isothermal depletion
N α p/z
This shows that greater amount of gas is trapped at higher pressure than low.

b. Conning in gas reservoir may be very severe since it causes loss of total field overall
recovery and decrease the efficiency of depletion mechanism.
