Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: Nonstandard Measurement

Objectives:
Students will be able to… estimate and measure the length of objects.
Students will be able to… compare and contrast lengths of objects using the words, longer and
shorter.
State Standards:
K.MDA.1 Identify measurable attributes (length, weight) of an object.
K.MDA.2 Compare objects using words such as shorter/longer, shorter/taller, and lighter/heavier

Context: I am teaching this particular lesson, because it is a standard in kindergarten to be able

to measure length of an object, and to compare the sizes of objects. Before this lesson is the topic
of what measurement is and how it can be done. This lesson is for the students to demonstrate
their understanding of measurement. After this lesson would be teaching about a ruler, instead of
using place holder items to measure an object. I am teaching students the basic concept of
measurement and how to view objects as shorter, taller, etc.
Data: Students will be grouped according to past performances in the previous lessons leading
up to this lesson. The groups will have a variety of students who are struggling with the concept
of measuring with students who already understand how to compare which objects are shorter
and longer in length. This grouping is done to provide students who struggle with a little help
from their peers, and to challenge the students who understand with the task of being able to
explain the topic. Data will be collected in this lesson by accurately measuring the objects and
answering questions correctly at the end of the lesson.
Materials:
Classroom objects to measure Example: chair, desk, another student, etc.
Cubes, paperclips, paper inchworms Non-standard items used to measure the
classroom objects.
Paper and pencil To fill out worksheet during the small group
part.
Measuring worksheet – used during the small Used to write down object and measurement
group part

Procedures:
Introduction 10 minutes):
I will start the lesson with a think-pair-share, which is when a question is asked, students

have time to think individually, pair with a partner, and then share the answer with the class. This

will be a routine in class to start a lesson, so the students should know the procedure. Today the

questions will be what measurement is, and what careers do you think have to use measuring?

After they think and pair we will come back together as a class to discuss the questions.

Teacher Directed 15 minutes):

During this section, we will start by talking what we already know about measuring. We

will go over what non-standard measurement is and why we sometimes use this type of

measurement. I will briefly mention standard measuring tools in relation to the tools they will be

using today, in order to put it all into context. For example, the inch worm in relation to an inch

on a ruler. I will also demonstrate the correct way to measure an object. As a class we will be

five objects found in the classroom that each small group will be required to measure. In

addition, we will go over what measuring tools should be used for certain objects and not for

others. For example, cubes may not be the best tool when measuring really long objects.

Collaborative 30 minutes):
Students will be required to work together to measure classroom objects using the

provided non-standard measuring tool. After we decide as a class what objects will be measured,

students should write or draw a picture of the object they are measuring on the worksheet

provided. One group should be measuring one item at a time and record on the worksheet the

answer they discovered. Students will be allowed to choose which non-standard measuring tool
should be used, keeping in mind what was previously discussed about not using a really tiny tool

to measure a really large item. After measuring all items, the group must compare the items by

length, determining which one is longer or shorter based on the measurements they got. Once a

group finishing measuring all discussed items and comparing the items, they will be allowed to

choose one item to measure if time allows. They must also record what their extra item is, and

also discuss if their object is longer or shorter compared to the other objects measured.

Independent Digital 5 minutes):

In this section, students will be working independently on their iPads. Students will

watch “Sid The Science Kid Nonstandard Measurement” with headphones. They will have

access to this video on our google classroom, I will post the video for easy access. The video

demonstrates exploring measurements in an interactive way. The video allows the students to

visually see how measuring works, and it also re-explains how measuring is done. The video also

goes over what non-standard measuring is and why it is used. The video is a great recap tool to

the teacher directed lesson, and a great tool to connect the hands-on activity to the goal of the

lesson.

Closure 5 minutes): The class will return to their seats and we will discuss everything

they learned today. I will ask questions like, “what did you learn today”, “what did you like

about today’s activity,” “How can we make it better next time?”, and “how can we use this

outside of the classroom”. We will also discuss the answers each group got for measuring the

objects choose all together, and discuss why there might be some differences in answers. I will

also have the groups who had extra time say what additional object they measured and how tall it
was. We will go over longer and shorter terms and compare and contrast the objects as a class.

This will help me see what students understand and which need more help with the concept.

Rationale:
(Sid Science Kid Video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-aU0f6ajtJE):
This media was used in the independent digital section. It supports student

learning with the standards and objectives. It visually shows the students all about

measuring using nonstandard measuring tools. Our objective was to be able to measure

object using these tools, and this video reinforces how and why we measure. It is of high

quality, because it is accurate in its information and presents it in a fun and engaging way

for the students. This video also has closed captions which is an assistive technology that

helps learners that have difficulty hearing. This video give students the information they

need while aligning with their standards in a fun and engaging way.

(Google classroom
Google classroom is a helpful tool to provide a safe learning space for students.

This supports the lesson in providing links to videos that align student learning with the

standards and objectives. It can also be used as a discussion tool, where a question can be

posted related to the lesson and students have to respond. It is of high quality, because it

is secure and private only for the students of the class. It is easily accessible and easy to

use for students. It differentiates instruction for all learners, because it gives an option for

students who are introverts to get point when having a class discussion online, and it

assists students in finding resources for lessons.
