Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: Civil War

Objectives:
Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of economic, political, and social
divisions during the civil war.
Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of South Carolina’s role during these
times.
State Standards: Demonstrate an understanding of economic, political, and social divisions during the United
States Civil War, including the role of South Carolina between 1850–1870.

Context: This lesson is for students to understand and grasp what was going on between
states socially that lead them to the civil war. Prior knowledge will come from events
leading up to civil war and what was causing the tensions. This lesson will lead into the
reconstruction after the civil war. This lesson will help students overall knowledge on why
and what was happening during this time.
Why are you teaching this particular lesson? What comes before this lesson in the larger unit?
What previous knowledge will students be bringing into the lesson? What comes after this lesson
in the larger unit? What are you teaching in order to prepare students for the next lesson topic?
Data: the classroom will be broken in half one will start with teacher group and others will
be doing the collaborative work. Then all at once students will take quiz. they will be
selected in-group based on their learning types and their previous material and knowledge
of subjects. Data on student’s knowledge will be recorded using an online quiz (quizlet)
scores from quiz let will be used to judge students understanding.
How will students be grouped in this lesson? What hypothetical data will these groupings be
based on? How will data be collected in this lesson for future groupings and teaching?
Materials: List all materials used (i.e. websites, apps, pencils, iPads, computers, worksheets,
diagrams, textbooks, etc.)

Detailed paragraphs from here on down.

Procedures:
Introduction (20 minutes): In the beginning of class attention will be grabbed by with a
class opener. (Everyday Class Starts with Question on the Board) Todays question will be on the
civil war, maybe what age of American soldiers fought in the war. After class opener we will
lead into a short discussion about current knowledge of the civil was and what was going on
during this time. The classroom will be split into half the one group will start with collaborative
work and others will be in teacher directed then all together students will take online quiz.
instructions for each group and tell them which station to report to next. Students will then report
to their stations and will begin work.

Teacher Directed (15 minutes): (students will break into smaller groups for discussion
and work this will also be their same group they make their poster with.) In this station student
will be using pencil, paper and ipads, students will first be asked to write down all of their
current knowledge of the civil war, they may write anything as long as there is are working
together discussing and asking more questions. After this students will then watch a short
YouTube video for middle school ages that overviews most of the important thing involving this
time https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUXc-rall80
During this time in the teacher directed group while the video is playing gives me an
opportunity to move around the classroom and make sure other groups are doing well. After their
video is complete students will then again discuss what they learned what they already knew.
Then will complete this by as a group writes down everything that they learned on a poster. (each
group will make a poster of thing they learned)

Collaborative (15 minutes): During this time students will also be using their ipads they will
then use their ipads an go to the history app on located on them. On the history channel app a
wide variety of education clips and movies can be found. An assigned video will be played and
will have questions students will have to answer and then turn in. The question will focus on
main points and will be straight forward and mainly used to keep students focus on the video.
After watching this video and answering questions students will then add any information to
their group posters (every stations work will be added to posters) https://www.history.com/apps

Independent Digital (15minutes): During this time student’s knowledge will be tested on
what they have learned. All Students will use I pads to use a code and take a quiz. This quiz will
ask questions about things they learned in the videos they watch in each group and the
discussions we had in the classroom. The data recorded from the quizlet scores will judge the
students current knowledge. After the quiz is complete stents will break back into their group and
finish their poster by writing down questions they still have.
Closure (15-minutes): During this time students will present the posters they made
during class. Each group will go over what they learned and then the questions they still have.
This will be used to see if there is common thing the students found interesting or still have
questions about. This will then allow me to end class possibly going over groups questions they
still have or discussing things they learned. Seeing what students found was interesting will help
make future lesson plans based on their interest.

Rationale:
Quizlet- this tool will help efficiently test and retrieve data of students knowledge.
Questions will be asked based on the state standards. This app is widely used in education
is easy to use and helpful. Using quizlet will allow me to record data faster this is useful if
need more help in a certain area of study we will know faster. This data can be taken for a
grade or just be used for future instruction.
History app- The history channel has tons of instructional videos, this app can be trusted
and is very professional. This video will be used to guide instruction complimented with the
questions I ask with it. The civil war video has lots of facts and animations that are more
appealing and entertaining then normal lecture.
Youtube video- This video is used more of an ice breaker it has a lot of good information in
a short amount of time. YouTube has lots of videos but not all are school appropriate, this
video is very entertaining and instructional.
(Multimedia 1= App or website): Why this piece of multimedia? How does it support
student learning and your standards and objectives? How do you know it is of high-
quality? Refer to the 8 bullet points in the Evaluating Multimedia PowerPoint to support
your rationale. How does this multimedia choice differentiate instruction for all learners
(consider differentiation and assistive technologies)?
