Self Evaluation and Reflection

I spent the first mondays of march doing my ELO job shadowing at metropolitan

pediatrics in beaverton. I shadowed a pediatric nurse practitioner and my first choice was to

shadow a nurse practitioner, which made me really happy. This ELO was a great experience for

me because I got to watch someone working my dream job. It showed me that everything isn’t

always what it seems, it can be hectic but it will still be worth it. First hand experiences are

always better because you get to see what the everyday lives of these professionals goes through.

Sherry Sweeney was the PNP I shadowed, and she was super nice, very intelligent, and helped

informing me more about this career. She would answer all my questions. Through this

internship I learned a lot about myself and the upsides and downsides of the job. I learned what I

can handle and what I can’t handle. Watching sherry work inspired me to specialize in pediatrics

because seeing the kids made me really happy and how sweet the kids were. By the end of the

first day I could already tell the signs of a child having an ear infection. I learned how to identify

certain characteristics to come up with a patient's diagnosis. Also that day many patients were

coming in with flu symptoms so if I ever feel those symptoms coming on I will know I have the

flu. Getting to understand the safety practices in how this office worked was interesting because

it differs from the office at providence. I feel that this elo taught me a lot about what type of

personality and character it takes to fulfil this kind of a job. Sherry was really proud of me and

she had told me I was one of the best students she had ever had, which gave me an extra boost of

of confidence knowing that I’m headed in the right direction. It taught me how to deal with a

huge workload because that's what this kind of job mostly consists of and being aware of what is

going on with the patients, and fellow assistants at all times. Having great communication skills
was also essential about informing everyone around you to make sure the patients are taken of at

all time. The highlight of my whole experience was getting to hold a three week old baby who

stopped crying when I held her. It made me really want to fulfil this career even more because

putting smiles on children's faces is so uplifting. Having hands on experience at only 18 is such

an incredible opportunity to be apart of. It was great working with sherry and I would do it all

over again.
