Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: Students will be engaged in the lesson by taking on the role of characters from the book, The
Giver.

Representation: Students are given free reign to create whatever product they like within the bounds of the
BPT, to present information and show an understanding of the character motivations within the novel.

Action and Expression: The BPT, Google Slides, allows students to create whatever product they are capable
of, and the teacher may assess it with their learning needs, profile, and readiness in mind.

Lesson idea implementation:

The project will be introduced in the middle of reading The Giver as a class, after Jonah has left the
Community with Gabriel. Students will be given partners and, for the first day, be tasked with completing a
list of rules for the Community, created by the governing council thereof. These rules should reflect what they
know of the Community’s existing rules, and their motivations for creating them. They should also reflect
what they know Jonah’s actions to have been. After creating these rules, they will create a Google Slides
presentation exhibiting these rules. After completing this product, they will present them to the class.

This learning task can be differentiated on an individual basis, based on learning profiled, readiness, and
difficulties a student may have.

Reflective Practice:

I designed this lesson to be a unit product for the chosen standards. The aim was to maintain engagement,
teach them how to cite textual evidence, and how to present these findings in a fun and unique way.
