I. Objectives
Upon completion of this lesson, students will be able to:
 Identify the parts of a book.
 Explain the purpose of each part of a book.
 Determine the order of the parts of a book.

III. Procedure
A. Motivation:
The Teacher asks the students to put out their books and browse the pages of the book. The
Teacher asks the students what parts of the book they have seen in the pages.

B. Presentation of the Lesson:


The Teacher presents the new lesson, Parts of a Book.

The following are major parts of a book.


 Title page – it gives the complete title of the book.
 Copyright page – it guarantees ownership and protection in publishing the book. It gives
the date and place of publication.
 Preface – it gives the author’s purpose in writing the book, its organization and its
method of presentation. This part is sometimes called the Foreword or the Introduction.
 Table of contents – it presents the main topics discussed in the book along with the
pages where they begin. The topics, divided into chapters or units are listed
chronologically or in the order of their appearance in the book.
 Text or Body of the book – this is the main part of the book.
 Glossary – it is a little dictionary; it helps the reader in understanding some terms used
in the book.
 Index – it is a detailed alphabetical listing of the ideas or topics contained in the book,
together with the pages where they are found.
 Bibliography – it lists in alphabetical order the references used by the author in writing
the book.
 Dedication page – it tells to whom the author dedicates the book. this is a special
message from the author expressing appreciation to someone.
 Acknowledgement –it expresses the author’s gratitude to the persons who in one way
or the other helped in writing the book.
 Appendix – it contains added information to the books. Not all books, however, have
this part.
Other parts are:
a. front and back cover/cover
b. Spine – contains the title and the author’s name.

Identification: Answer on ¼ sheet of paper
1. This part of a book lists chapters and sections in a book. It has the page numbers for each
chapter or section.

2. this part of the book contains a lists of special words and their meanings. It is like a mini
dictionary in the back of the book.

3. This is one of the first pages in the book. It tells the complete title of the book, author, and
publisher.

4. this is a special message from the author expressing appreciation to someone.

5. This page in a book includes the copyright year, the publisher, and important legal
information about the book.

6. This page mentions the people who helped the author write the book.

7. In this page the author tells his/her purpose in writing the book.
