Music and the Movement Syllabus

Course Description 
This syllabus is designed to inform students of the learning objectives, planned unit material, resources, and 
overall curriculum goals. Please remember this is a general outline for the unit; instruction and in-class 
assignments may change throughout the unit, and you will be notified of any changes.  
 
In general music, we will focus on the concepts and skills below. The unit material will be flexible, 
student-centered, and offer as much choice and variety as possible to encourage a high level of effort, student 
engagement, and success.

Music and the Movement Overview 
● Week 1: Classroom Procedures and Expectations 
● Week 2: ​The Children’s March​ Documentary 
● Week 3: Refuse to Stand Silently By 
● Week 4: ​The Culture​ Documentary 
● Week 5: The Birmingham Pledge and Literary Analysis 
● Weeks 6-7: Music and the Movement 
● Weeks 8-9: Strong Women and Gentle Men 
● Week 10: Contemporary Movements  
● Weeks 11-13: Mix It Up 
 
Individual Expectations 
1. Follow classroom entrance procedures, ​15 points  
a. Enter quietly 
b. Grab chair from designated chair personnel 
c. Place chair in assigned row and order 
d. Receive materials from designated passer 
e. Work on assignment 
2. Follow classroom exit procedures, ​15 points 
a. Return materials to designated collector 
b. Return chair to designated chair personnel 
c. Line up at the door quietly and await teacher pick-up 
3. You need permission to leave your seat or the room once class has begun, ​15 points 
4. Be positive; keep any hurtful opinions and words to yourself. Any personality conflicts should be dealt 
with by you and the other person​ outside of class,​ ​20 points 
5. Respect other students’ work and property, ​20 points 
6. Be quiet and respectful when entering or exiting the music room, ​15 points 
**Individual Expectations are worth ​100 points​. By maintaining 100 points, you will leave class with an A in 
the “Daily Performance Objective” category in Gradebook. 
 
Classroom Jobs 
1. Chair Personnel (2) 
a. At the beginning of class, each chair personnel will give every student a chair  
b. At the end of class, each chair personnel will collect chairs  
c. Chair personnel must maintain neat seat stacks of four chairs per stack 
2. Room Manager (1) 
a. Make sure chairs are in neat rows with an aisle down the middle 
b. Chairs should be directly behind the seat in front of them 
c. Chairs should be in clean rows 
d. At the end of class, make sure all chairs and supplies are put away 
3. Passers (4) 
a. At the beginning of class, each passer will pass out their designated item (folders, Do Nows, 
pencils) 
b. At the end of class, each passer will collect their designated item, making sure to leave nothing 
left behind 
4. Attendance Specialist (1) 
a. Attendance specialist takes attendance when students are in their assigned seat  
5. Line Manager (1) 
a. Line manager makes sure students are standing in line prior to teacher pick-up 
 
Interventions 
● Unattempted work will result in an intervention from 2:15-3:00pm in the music room 
● Inability to remain seated or in assigned seat will result in an intervention from 2:15-3:00pm in the 
music room 
● Misuse of supplies will result in an invoice of damaged items to be replaced by next class 
● 4-Step Redirection System 
○ Verbal warning 
○ Calming corner 
○ “Cool Off and Come Back” 
○ Escorted to Mr. Beatty 
 
Grading Policy 
1. Daily Performance Objective, 45%    
a. Meeting the learning objective(s)  2. Classroom Procedures, 45%  
b. Maintaining individual  3. Written Work, 10%
