DESIGN
Slip-Element-Slip Design
The Slip-Element-Slip configuration is a self energizing anchoring system that locks in Packing Element
compression and does not allow slack to develop in the Packing Element, even under cyclic loading conditions.
In the Element-Slip and Slip-Element designs pressure differential and load from one direction will introduce play
into the system by moving the Slip away from the Cone. In these designs there is no means to tighten the Body
Lock Ring to accommodate the play. This condition is exacerbated by temperature cycles. In the Premier™
design, play is eliminated from the system because the Slips contain the motion generated by cyclic forces, and
the Body Lock Ring can ratchet to trap these motions and forces. Ref. (Fig 1).
Slip Design
The Premier™ Packer is designed with a proven non-deforming Slip system taken from Baker Oil Tools field
proven Reliant™ Series Packers and are designed so that all outer components are picked up by the mandrel
after cutting. To facilitate removal, each of the upper slips is picked up in sequence so that each slip receives
the maximum amount of overpull to ensure retrievability.
The first and second slips are on opposing sides of the Packer. These two slips have a lesser back angle on the
wickers to ease removal. The entire pulling force is applied to the first slip. Once it has disengaged the pull is
transferred to the opposing slip. Once these two slips are loose, the packer may be pulled free without any
difficulty. The slip system is designed to be retractable and non-deforming.
The Premier™ Packer slips are designed such that they provide maximum casing contact without providing full
360 degree contact. This is an essential feature in ensuring removability. The 360 degree Slips are commonly
utilized throughout the industry for Permanent Production Packers and are complicated to remove from the

wellbore due to retrieval overpull being evenly distributed around 360 degree of Slip contact area. Distributing
this overpull over 360 degree contact area effectively reduces the pull through each unit length of slip and as
such Baker Oil Tools only recommends utilizing such Slip design in Permanent Packer applications. The
Premier™ Packer design maximizes Slip to Casing contact area while enabling maximum overpull to be applied
individually to each Slip. Ref. (Fig 2).
Fig 2. Non-deforming Slip Design (Photo taken after successful differential test and retrieval)
The Packing Element system on the Premier™ Packer features patented (Patent number 5961123) Anti-
Extrusion Back-Up Rings. These Anti-Extrusion Rings positively retract which prevents swabbing when pulling
out of the well. Premier Packer Back Up Rings are threaded to the Gauge Rings above and below the Packing
Element thus the Rings are positively pulled away from the Element during retrieval as the pick-up shoulders are
engaged. Ref. (Fig 3) and (Fig 4).

Mandrel Design
The Premier™ Packer features a no Mandrel movement design which is ideal for stacked and feed through
Packer applications. No Mandrel movement is achieved through the use of a staged setting mechanism which
ensures that the Debris Barrier sets first followed by the Upper Slip, Packing Element and then the lower Slip.
Once the Premier™ Packer Mandrel has been severed for removal by any of the available means, the Packer is
removed from the wellbore by application of overpull to the workstring, stretching the Mandrel out so that the
Slips are released and the Packing Element relaxes. This retrieval sequence increases the length of the cut of
the Mandrel to enable Slip release and Element relaxation. A risk faced by the cut-to-release Packers is that if
the setdown weight is applied to the Packer after initiating release, the gap in the Mandrel will close up and the
Packer will reset.
The Premier™ Packer has been designed utilizing a unique additional Body Lock Ring which locks the Mandrel
in the extended position after the retrieval has been initiated. As the Mandrel is locked, the gap on the Mandrel
cannot close up and the Packer cannot reset.
The Baker Oil Tools Premier™ Packer has adopted the design philosophy of continuously feeding the control
line conduit through the body of the packer. The control lines can be pre-fed in the workshop before shipping
equipment to well location which reduces the rig time and completion cost. The feed through holes are designed
to accommodate ¼ inch OD control lines or a TEC line. A special Baker Jam Nut as used in T-Series Safety
Valves has been developed to allow for internal and external pressure testing of the connection(s) at the top end
of the packer. No connection is necessary at the bottom of the packer. The main considerations for this design
of the Premier™ packer is to:
• Reduce complexity of packer body design and offer a standard, field proven packer design.
• Eliminate exposure of the Premier™ Packer body to high control line pressures.
• Establish the well pressure balance across the packer body to reduce overall stress on the packer.
• Eliminate potential leak path.

RETRIEVAL METHODS
The Premier™ Packer features flexibility in retrieval methods. The primary retrieval method is severing the
internal mandrel and removal by straight pull. All components of the packer are retrieved together.
The cut-to-retrieve Premier™ packer (CTR) may be retrieved on the production string after cutting the mandrel
on a thru-tubing trip with either a chemical cutter or a mechanical cutter Ref. (Fig.7 and 8). If retrieval of the
packer from the well utilizing cutting methods or a retrieving tool is not possible then it may be removed by
milling. Ref. (Fig. 9). The design features, materials and rotational locking design are specifically intended to
ease milling process.
The shift-to-retrieve Premier™ packer (STR) may be retrieved utilizing the Size 368 Overpull Shifting Tool
(Product Family No. H99510).

Retrieving Instructions for the CTR Premier™ Packer (Product Family No. H78469)
Equalize the pressure above and below the packer by opening sliding sleeves or cutting holes in the tubing. To
retrieve the packer and tailpipe, the packer mandrel must be cut. Two methods of retrieval are available
depending on the geometry of the completion:
In non-restrictive ID completions, chemical cutting is the primary method of removing the Premier packer. This
cutting method is applicable only when the OD of the pre determined cutting assembly can pass through all the
restrictions above the packer. The OD and ID of the cutting zone are based on tubing dimensions. This should
help in selecting the proper chemical cutting configuration. The use of a radioactive tag run on the original
completion is recommended as a means of locating the cutting zone of the packer. A Baker Atlas Chemical
Cutter should be run on an appropriately designed wireline tool string consisting of weight bars, collar locator,
firing sub, upper propellant sub, slip sub, lower propellant sub, chemical cylinder, cutting head and a bull plug.
The chemical cutter can be run with a collar locator or gamma ray correlation device. It is recommended in this
application to run a collar log to tie-in into the bottom-hole assembly. Care should be given when running the
bottom hole assembly to take accurate length, ID, and OD measurements of the packer, pipe, and crossover
connections. One should allow enough space below the desired cutting area for the collar locator or correlation
device to pass below the cutting area to ensure accurate depth correlation. The chemical cutter is anchored by a
button type slip, which anchors the tool during the cutting operation. Once the cutting operation is completed the
slips retract and the cutting tool is free to be pulled from the well. Once activated, the chemical cutter will cut
cleanly through the packer mandrel allowing the packer and tailpipe to be retrieved. In stacked packer
applications, all the packers can be retrieved on the production tubing simply by cutting all the packer mandrels.
In restricted ID type completions, coiled tubing conveyed mechanical cutting allows retrieval of the Premier
packer on the completion string. This cutting method must be pre-designed into the original completion as it
requires the use of a Thru-Tubing Cutting Extension (TCE). The TCE, placed above the Premier packer, allows
the cutting Bottom Hole Assembly to locate and position itself across the cutting zone of the packer. A Baker Oil
Tools DB Underreamer should be run on an appropriately designed coil tubing tool string consisting of a coil
tubing connector, dual flapper back pressure valve, hydraulic disconnect, dual actuated circulation sub,
adjustable no-go locating sub and a mud motor. The adjustable no-go locating sub will be spaced out with the
DB underreamer to place the cut in the required location. Care should be given when running the bottom hole
assembly to take accurate length, ID, and OD measurements of the packer, pipe, and crossover connections.
One should allow enough space above the desired cutting area for the adjustable no-go locating sub to locate
and still provide sufficient distance for the mud motor and the DB underreamer. The adjustable no-go locating
sub is the only mechanism required to provide for set down weight of the coil tubing and accurate location of the
‘DB’ underreamer and the subsequent cut of the packer mandrel. Once the cutting operation is completed, the
cutting knives retract into the ‘DB’ underreamer and the entire bottom-hole assembly is removed from the well.

In the event the packer can not be retrieved using standard retrieving procedures, Baker ‘Wilson Type M J-Joint’
(Product Family No. H14133) can be used in conjunction with a washover assembly to burn over and retrieve
the Premier packer in one trip. Run in the hole with the washover assembly and appropriately sized Metal
Muncher® Milling Shoe. Mill down to the slips or until the packer moves downhole. Pull out of the hole with the
washover assembly and recovered packer.
Retrieving Instructions for the STR Premier™ Packer (Product Family No. H78466)
The Size 368 Overpull Shifting Tool (Product Family No. H99510) is used to “Shift-to-Release” retrievable
packers. Both single and multiple packer completions can be released in one trip using this tool. The Overpull
Shifting tool is run, above an orifice sub, on drill pipe or tubing to a depth below the lowest packer. The wellbore
fluid is circulated through Overpull Shifting Tool building up a back pressure which will activate and stroke the
Collet Fingers. The Collet Fingers will expand from under the Outer Sleeve and contact the tubing/packer ID. As
the tool workstring is lifted the Collet Fingers will drag along the tubing/packer ID until the packer release profile
is located. At this point the Collet Fingers will stroke further down and will be fully supported. An overpull will pull
the Collet Fingers upwards which in turn will shear release the packer release sleeve. Fluid circulation flow rate
needs to be reduced to zero to fully retract the Collet Finger back under the Outer Sleeve. The Overpull Shifting
Tool can be moved upwards to the next packer depth and packer release procedure can be repeated.
