Unit Overview
Unit Title: E-Learning / How teachers will use online classes in teaching.
Unit Summary:

This unit will explain how e-learning is important in present day. I will teach teachers
how to integrate e-learning tools into the classroom and use it with their kids. They will
also learn to create new courses, with new lesson types added often. Also forums,
chats, web pages, links to external content, quizzes and more.
Subject Area: Technology
Grade Level: Teachers/Adult Educations.
Approx. time needed:6 sessions/ 90 min per session.
Unit Foundation

Needs Assessment:Computer lab, Internet connection, Google Docs, Google form, voice
thread (maybe), PowerPoint or slide share.
Because this class is about e-learning and creating an online class,I expect my
students have basic technology skills in order to use tools like computer competently.

Framework model: I will use Bloom's Digital Taxonomy.

This model is the best model to addressing students skills in my class. Which:

1- Remembering ability: to recall previously learned material.In this points Students


will need to remember their prior knowledge in using basic computer skills they knew
and learned before. For me, this point will help me bring what I learned about online
class and how to use this knowledge in order to avoid what problems I had faced
before.

2- Understanding ability: to grasp meaning, explain, restate ideas. This is important in


order to attract my students how to be an effective teachers. Students will be able to
understand the content clearly because they are practicing what they are learn in class
and that help them to see the meaning of the class, explain what they understand and
restate the ideas to fit in their classrooms.

3 -Applying ability: to use learned material in new situations. In this points, I will teach
how to create a lesson which my students already know, but how to design it in a new
way such as an online lesson. Similarly, my students will grab this ideas to their
classroom in school they teach.
4- Analyzing ability: to separate material into component parts and show

relationships between parts. This point will help me establishing and building links
within and outside of documents and web pages, and organize the materials to be more
clear.

5- Evaluating ability by both students and me: to judge the worth of material against
stated criteria.I will enhance posting comments to my students in the docs we share.
My students also can evaluate my way of teaching and post comments about the
materials and the class positively and negatively.

6 - Creating ability: to develop , design, construct, plan, invent, and make. As an


instructor, I will create, design and make a new way of teaching using tools for the
first time. In order to have a good class, I should be more creative with my trainers by
advising them to use new tools to create and design something new for their
students.

My students will follow my steps to create a unique classroom that could enhance
students ability also to be more creative in weather school and/or life.

Targeted content standards/benchmarks:

Teachers will see the differences between the traditional system of learning and new
ways of learning. Introduce them to new tools and methods for work and
learning. They will use the technology to teach and they will find this way more
effective.

(NETS) Standards:
1- Teachers promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify
students' conceptual understanding and thinking, planning, and creative processes.
(standard 1).

2- Teachers design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools
and resources to promote student learning and creativity.(Standard 2).

3- Teachers develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable all


students to pursue their individual curiosities and become active participants in setting
their own educational goals, managing their own learning, and assessing their own
progress.(standard 2).

4- Teachers demonstrate fluency in technology systems and the transfer of current


knowledge to new technologies and situations.(standard3).

5- Teachers exhibit leadership by demonstrating a vision of technology infusion,


participating in shared decision making and community building, and developing the
leadership and technology skills of others. ( standard 5).
Technology leadership standards:

1- identify and evaluate methods and strategies for teaching computer/technology


concepts and skills within the context of classroom learning and coordinate
dissemination of best practices at the district/state/regional level.(standard 2).

2- design methods and strategies for teaching concepts and skills that support
integration of technology productivity tools.( standard 3).

3- design methods for teaching concepts and skills that support integration of
communication tools (standard 3).

Student objectives / learning outcomes:

Teachers will be able to design an e-learning class in order to be able to teach their
students online class.
Teachers will learn new way of teaching by using technology and bring this technology
to the classroom.
Teachers will collaborate with other students,and students will try new ways of learning
beside books.
Teachers will be able to teach online class instead of using books.
Teachers will communicate with others via technology.

Design Story:

" What an awesome idea" these is how Nour started here conversation with me. Nour
one of my students came from a small town in the south of Saudi Arabia. Her town has
a traditional school that has special needs of materials. She came to my class because
she believes the technology is important in modern day. she is a teacher who want her
students to be more affective in their life. what she says to me was:

" This is tough for me working on all these stuff in my school. It hard to teach students
who are lack of technology knowledge these stuff and encourage them in my town. A
lot of my students don't have computers at their home, how can they collaborate and
use these tools and share their ideas online with me." I knew her situation because
there are many schools have the same problem. I recommended her to just start
working at schools and let the students use the available computers at schools for a
short time during the day and teach them how online class going and work. The
students here are audience more than creators, so they will see how the teacher going
to teach using new tools and learn how technology then is important. Nour convince
her school to buy computer and projector just for an online class. After my class end,
she went back to her town to work with her students online and see how every thing
going. One of her students was interesting working with her in order to learn all stuff
because sh want to be a teacher in the future. I advise Nour to use as much technology
with students as she can to help students get used to use modern materials in their
lives to grow up.
Student Assessment Plan
Assessment Summary:

* Be able to use the computer effectively when appropriate in order to teach an online
class in the classroom by using the tools I will provide in the class.
* Be able to engage in discussion wither online or face-to-face, My students will see
google docs or/ and wikispace to see the discussion topic we will talk about or even
just a general discussion about the class and how it works.
* Complete all assignments that required to get full grade.
* Design an online class with complete at least one lesson with homework.
* attend all classes.
My students assumed to have prior knowledge in using basic technology. I expect them
to design a great online class with some hints from me as instructor. They suppose to
have skills like; read, listen, answer questions, collaborate with students , think with
others, and think independently. They are adult, and all these skills are already exist in
their personality.

Assessment Time-line
Before project work begins
Each teacher/ learner must create a new e-learning account @ Google (so they can
share Google docs, form, presentations... with me) and eduslide.com (because they are
going to practice how to design an e-learning class).

Student work on projects and completed tasks


Design an online class and share it with students. Make lesson to upload it online in
their online course.

  After project work is completed

Use this online class for at least one subject per semester.
Peer Feedback: I will send a feedback form by using Google form and share the link in
the end of the session so the teachers will feel free to give as much feedback as they
want.
Unit Details
Prerequisite Skills:
Basic computer skills, Basic internet information, Email address.
Instructional Procedures:

The course will consist chiefly of student development, creation, discussion, analysis,
and evaluation of e-learning.

There will be discussions of online tools/ lessons for each class period. These
discussions will be in wiki space online.There will be assignments for trainers. And
finally a brief presentation.

1st session:

I will start my first session in my unit by define e-learning:

II. Benefits of e-learning.

III. E-learning development process.

I first will play a video using the projector about the importance of e-learning and
another one about online classes.

The following units will explain more about how to create an online class and how to
use it in the classroom.

2nd session:

Session 2 in my lesson will design Eduslid.com, which I will explain how to create new
course, grade book, and class discussion. The main points I will teach are:

1- Create new lessons or courses.

2- Add websites and personal pages and share it with students.

3- Create a grade book.

4- How to add users/group whether students, teachers, and/or administrators.

Teachers may sign up for new account and then develop their courses. In this day, I
will use the computer and projector to explain to teachers how this site works visually.

I will not advise them to sign up until finishing the second recourse, which is Wiziq in
the next day.

I will assign teachers to create an account in Google docs so I can share my lessons
and courses with them and to find more information about websites I recommend them
to use.

3rd session:

In session 3 I will explain; Wiziq. WiZiQ is an online teaching platform which provides a
virtual classroom environment for teachers to interact online and teach students in real
time. Teachers can also build a profile, keep an availability schedule, and maintain a
content library, which is associated with their profiles, by uploading PowerPoint
presentations and PDF Files. My main points I will teach are:

• Build visibility in Communities

In the end of this class, I will explain briefly how Google docs works. Teachers will have
two assignments: sign up in Eduslide.com and Wiziq.com and share it in specific docs I
create in Google docs

I also will set up a discussion forum in Wiki space http://e-learning-


classroom.wikispaces.com/Discussion to allow live discussion between me and the
teachers any time beside the class.

4th session:

Session 4 will be different. In this session teachers will design their lessons in websites
I explained before. I will be there to assist them. Each teacher will create a completed
course for their classrooms. I will help them if they need my experience.

In the end of the day, they will be able to upload and create their courses online and
ready to share it with students.

Assignment: Teachers will share at least one course with students in at least one
classroom.

They may share questions, recommendation, suggestions, and advices through


Wikispace descussion

5th session:

In Session 5, I will explain different ways tools in order to allow each teacher to choose
one for final presentation in last class. I will teach teachers how to use following tools
briefly:

Ø Google presentation: 15 minutes.

Ø Voice thread: 20 minutes.

Ø Screencast-o-matic : 10 minutes.

They are required to present their experience in using online class by themselves and
with students.

Final session:

Unit 6 will be a presentation class. Each teacher will present experience in 5-10
minutes by using one of the tools I explained in last session.

I will then send them a survey about the class using a Google form for feedback and
evaluate the course.

Design Report:

My main mission is teaching teachers the importance of e-learning and how to design a
simple online course for their students. E-learning systems address the issue of new
educational e-content throughout the concept of learning objects. My class will be
designed to be teachers training to use online class in their classroom.
My goals of this unit are:

Goal 1: All students and teachers will have access to information technology in their
classrooms, schools, communities and homes.

Goal 2: All teachers will use technology effectively to help students achieve high
academic standards.

Goal 3: All students will have technology and information literacy skills.

Goal 4: Research and evaluation will improve the next generation of technology
applications for teaching and learning.

Goal 5: Digital content and networked applications will transform teaching and
learning.

Learning Activities: In my class, I will describe the importance of e-learning in


present day. My students are teachers who want to improve their classroom skills to
match the new technology that has invaded education. I will use Google docs to explain
my course and it will be a reference to my trainer in any time if they want to refresh
their information. I will also teach them how to create an online class in an easy way by
using some Google 2.0 tools that provide free online course creation such as; Eduslide,
and Wiziq. These two tools are great source to novice in online course.

My audience is teachers who are advised to start creating a (simple) online class and
see if it works in the classroom so their schools may admit this type of class. If at least
one classroom in one school works online, that would be an awesome beginning for e-
learning education in the future.

Objectives: Teachers will become familiar with new technology. They will increase
their information about learning than before. Teachers will be able to communicate with
their students via technology. Students will be able to find a resources of their lesson
plans anytime, anywhere.Online technologies provide opportunities for teachers to
experience a more global community than is possible face-to-face.

Rationale for Learning Activities: I decided to design and teach this such class
because e-learning is the future technology of learning. I took some classes in UCD
which gave my great ideas how it worked. I want my country, Saudi Arabia to be one
of those countries that insert online classes in their universities. I believe that will be a
revolution in learning if my country starts this type of online learning. I believe this is
important for teachers too to learn this class because it is the future of learning in the
classroom which will increase the ability of using technology in schools and
collages. The ultimate goal of my teaching is to change the way my students view their
relationship to technology. I want them to see themselves not as passive users of
technology and research, but rather as active designers of technology and research,
who creatively re-purpose tools, technologies, artifacts and ideas to meet their own
goals and desires.

Delivery System: My unit will be delivered to teachers by using computers and


internet access in the class to use new tools directly. Also needs of projector to show
how the tools and courses work. Teachers are able to download lessons I provided in
Google docs anytime to review the class and print it. What teachers needs is to know
how to access to internet and how to download files. They will use two tools in order to
create (simple) online class and they are FREE.

Mediation: The only thing we need are computers and internet connection. This will
help teachers ti get ride of not using technology in class. Must teachers now know how
to use computers and I will develop this skill to let them be more technological people
in the classroom.

Leadership: As an instructor, In order to be good leader, I have to achieve my


goals. I will tell the teachers what to do and doesn't worry too much about the feelings
or relationships within the group and me. This is appropriate where teachers are new,
inexperienced, lacking in confidence or need a lot of help and direction in order to get
the job done. I also should give clear directions and provide follow-up and feedback. I
will to help others to be successful and to feel empowered. I will consider that different
people require different styles of leadership which I have to be careful in what and who
I lead. I should show good perspective to my trainer in order to get their trust.
