Mumbai-Pune Expressway
Mumbai-Pune Expressway, a greenfield six lane access controlled freeway, with two intermediate interchanges, is a
landmark project that created wide awareness of the benefits of the expressway system among the Indian urban population
for the first time. Linking of two major urban centers, free from interfering traffic, benefited users immensely by reduction to
half the travel time leading to fuel savings, reduced accidents and environmental gains.
STUP, as the Consultant handling the difficult 14 km stretch starting from Panvel, near Mumbai, contributed greatly to the
success of this project. STUP’s assignment included finalizing the alignment and geometric design, design of the rigid
concrete pavement, bridges, underpass and overpass, planning of drainage and signage. Starting with topographical survey
and geotechnical investigations, work included the detail engineering, preparation of tender documents, cost estimates,
scrutiny and evaluation of tenders, construction supervision, Quality Assurance and Project Management. This expressway,
through western ghat hilly areas, stands as a testimony to engineering excellence in the highway sector of the country.

STUP Consultants alongwith Transroute
International, a French Consultant, and a local
Associate secured this prestigious assignment
against intense International competition.
The team of specialists conducted intensive
field studies with custom built equipments for
assessing road conditions of 12,500 km of Roads
all over the country and evaluated the restrictive
effects of multiple vehicle ferry crossings that
were unique to this country.
Transport economists analyzed the effects of
such traffic hold ups and worked out the benefits
of the Master Plan that would accrue to the
road users. All the data was fed into the HDM
programme for generating the Road Master Plan
of the country, which became the basis for future
road development projects.

Second Thane Creek Bridge, Mumbai, India
In order to meet the traffic demands on the link between Navi Mumbai and the mainland, a second bridge, 1845 m long is
constructed across the Thane Creek. The bridge superstructure consists of two independent decks, each with a 3 lane
carriage-way. To meet the hydraulic and navigation requirements the piers of the bridge are aligned with piers of existing
road and rail bridge. The span arrangement for creating a continuous unit of 321 m overall length is with 53.5+2 x 107+53.5 m.
To ensure durability under the severe aggressive environment, extensive treatment was given to components of superstructure
as well as substructure. A cofferdam was installed in precast R.C.C. for the depth of clay at the bottom and was left behind
after use. The upper hollow steel portion was recovered and was reused. Sinking was carried out up to rock level by grabs
excavating the marine clay within the cofferdam. Open foundation created inside cofferdam was keyed with hard rock by a
downward projection in RCC from the shallow bottom plug.

Eastern Freeway in Mumbai
Eastern Freeway is a Road link in Mumbai that connects Fort area in South Mumbai to the Eastern Express Highway at
Ghatkopar. This 17 km long, access controlled Freeway reduces the travel time considerably, making an important change in
lifestyle of commuters to the mainland area from the Southern tip of the peninsula that forms the City. The Freeway has 11.5
km Elevated Road and 4.3 km Road-Tunnel, along with four exit and entry ramps.
Built on areas having multiple underground utilities, the support location had to be adjusted to suit the site requirements.
Superstructure spans varied from 30 to 45 m, built with prestressed concrete segmental box girders installed with launching
girders. The foundation construction was with piles and the sub-structure in reinforced concrete. The main challenge was
to align all elements of the structure to suit the geometric configurations of this high speed freeway and design the same.

Bridge over River Yamuna at Kalpi
The 767 m long bridge across the river Yamuna at Kalpi has 85 m in-situ cantilever constructed spans pinned at their mid
point. In order not to detract from the graceful form of the spans which are 2.0 m deep at the center and 6.0 m deep at the
supports, a light parapet was developed and precast to obtain a good finish and alignment.
The cantilever bridge required hollow rectangular piers; in addition, hollow triangular cut and ease waters were provided in
view of the high flood velocities.
The resulting elongated hexagonal pier section was made to fuse gently at the top into the rectangular section, a departure
from the conventional approach of making an abrupt and discordant change in pier section at high flood level. Consequently,
the deck and piers also fuse gracefully.
