1. Upon arrival of the Photo Ride check for any signs of damage to the packing or ride. Any
damage should be reported to your supplier immediately. Check the mains supply voltage and
coin mechanism are correct.
2. Prior to operating the ride read this instruction manual and the manuals for the printer, camera
and lens.
Before siting the ride make a note of the machine’s serial number. This is situated on the silver
manufacturer’s plate at the rear of the machine. The serial number gives access to essential
manufacturing details of your ride and is vital for the tracing of parts and manufacturing detail,
and spares back up.
For transportation purposes certain Photo Rides are shipped with their printers removed. Prior to
operating the Photo Ride, the printer must be fitted correctly in its printer case. Use the
following procedure:-
Now set the DIL switch settings. Please determine the printer type in use before setting DIL
switches.
Sony UP860
DIL switches 1 & 8 off. All others on
Ensure the gamma switch is set to II
On front panel set THRU/EE switch to EE
Set Posi-Mega switch to positive
Sony UP890
DIL switches 1 & 9 off. All others on
Ensure the gamma switch is set to II
On front panel ensure STD/Side switch is set to Std. Ensure THRU/EE switch is set to EE.
Set rotary dial to normal
f) Place printer into its mounting holes on the tray.
g) Secure metal strap over top of printer to stop it moving.
h) Push printer tray back into closed position.
a) Turn on the power to the machine (the rides light should flash) and if sound is turned up a
message will be heard which will state “the self test is complete”
b) On Sony printers the power is applied to the printer whenever the ride is connected to a mains
supply. Therefore on Sony models now press the power switch on the printer front and the
power LED situated next to the power switch should now illuminate. Close the front printer
door.
c) Insert the correct number of coins into the coin mechanism. When enough money has been
inserted the ride will start and the car background sound should be heard.
d) After approximately eight seconds a message should be heard which will state “smile you are
about to have your photograph taken”
e) Ride will continue and a print out should start immediately which will take approximately five
seconds. For rides fitted with auto cutter see notes on pages 13 & 14.
f) If at this stage the picture is:-
i) out of focus
ii) of a poor picture quality i.e. dark or light –
adjustment will need to be made to the printer settings or lens. This adjustment should be carried
out once the Photo Ride is sited in the area in which it is to operate. Accurate adjustment to light
levels can only be made once the Photo Ride is permanently sited. See pages 4 to 6
g) Always ensure that the mains plug is accessible so that mains power may be isolated in an
emergency
The following considerations MUST be observed when siting the Photo Ride
a) The Photo Ride must be sited inside. This is essential
b) The ride should be sited away from direct sunlight. Sunlight from roof lights or windows
will present quality problems to the picture
c) Site in areas that have reasonable light levels
d) Site in areas that are not too humid or too hot. The operating parameters of the printer are:-
5°C to 40°C (41°F to 104°F)
Operating humidity is:-
20% to 80% (no condensation)
Always ensure the printer is protected from dust and moisture
e) Avoid areas where rapid change in temperature will occur as this causes condensation build
up in the printer and camera
f) Although the Photo Ride is fitted with wheels, these are purely for ease of siting. The Photo
Ride should always be permanently sited – never moved “in and out” of a site. This is
because vibration will cause extreme damage to the printer.
Having determined a suitable site for the location of the Photo Ride, when siting consider the
following:-
a) The machine must be placed on level ground which is firm and free from any holes etc. The
surface that the machine stands on should not be slippery
b) Site the ride and screw down the 6 adjustable feet situated underneath the Photo Ride. These
can be adjusted using a 17mm spanner. Ensure that the 4 castor wheels have cleared the floor
and that the adjuster feet are set to make the ride secure
c) The machine should be connected to an RCB device
d) The machine should be sited clear from any other obstruction. The manufacturers
recommends the machine is sited a minimum of 6 feet from any other obstruction or
equipment
e) The power point that supplies the ride should be no further than 6 feet away and the cable
must be safely secured and protected to eliminate any risk of damage or tripping
f) The ride should not be sited in an area where it will cause an obstruction
Having sited the Photo Ride, the picture may need adjustment to quality. To ease picture
adjustments a monitor taking a PAL input and fitted with a BNC connector is useful and for
some adjustments essential. For this purpose Amutec strongly recommend the Sony Viewcam
Model FDM030
a) With the power off, connect the monitor to the BNC connector on the rear of the printer
marked “Video Output”
b) Power up the printer and monitor. The image seen by the camera should now appear on the
monitor screen
c) Set the focus on the monitor by adjusting the focus setting on the camera lens,
remember to lock the focus screw when correct adjustment has been achieved.
Carry out a print. If the colour achieved from the printer is unacceptable, this can be
Adjusted by the methods shown on pages 6 & 7
d) Further picture quality adjustment can be on the lens which is fitted with two types of
adjustment:
i) ALC adjustment
ii) level adjustment
Take off the ALC cap on the lens cover and turn the ALC potentiometer with a precision
screwdriver until suitable exposure is obtained
Turn clockwise for average metering
Turn anti-clockwise for peak metering
Take off the level cap on the lens cover and turn the level potentiometer with a precision
screwdriver so that the optimum level is obtained.
To get picture lighter turn clockwise in H direction
To get picture darker turn anti-clockwise in L direction
When suitable picture quality has been obtained by adjustment of the camera and lens, then the
monitor can be disconnected and the printer draw returned. Check power is on the printer and
close the printer door
a) Power up the Photo Ride. A message will be heard (provided the volume switch is turned up)
which will state “the self test is complete”. The lights on the toy should flash and power
should be on the printer
b) Insert 1 coin. Coin should be accepted by the coin mechanism and the counter should turn 1
digit. At this stage wait. After one second a message should be heard which will state “please
insert another coin”. If a second coin is not inserted this message will repeat after six seconds
If a second coin is not inserted within two minutes the credit will be wiped from the timer.
Insert a second coin. The counter should turn 1 digit. Ride should start.
c) Approximately eight seconds into the ride a message will be heard “smile, you are about to
have your photograph taken”. At this point the image seen by the camera will be accepted by
the printer and printing will proceed.
While printing is in progress NEVER remove power from the printer
d) Ride will continue through its cycle and immediately after the smile message is heard printing
will start and last for approximately five seconds. At the end of ride motion will stop and
picture can be collected.
Amutec’s rides are provided with comprehensive warning stickers and instructions which are
applied to the ride at the time of sale. Operators should ensure:-
3. Stickers are translated into any commonly used local language and then applied to the
machine
11. INSPECTIONS
1. The mains cable and mains plug are in good condition ensuring the fuse is of the correct
rating
3. That no sharp edges have been caused by broken lenses or damaged fibreglass
MECHANICAL EXAMINATION
Mechanical examination should only be carried out by a competent person. (In the UK registered through
BACTA under the Amusement Device Inspection Procedure Scheme)
1. Remove inspection covers and casings to allow a thorough examination of all moving parts and any
part of the machine which could conceivably be regarded as vital to the safe operation of the machine.
(Wherever fibreglass casings are removed work-wear gloves should be worn to protect skin from
internal fibreglass edges).
2. Check all nuts/bolts and grub screws are tight and fitted with shake proof or spring washers.
4. Check the ride’s structure for any sign of damage or corrosion. Pay particular attention to welded joints.
5. Check the condition of the ‘V’ belt and ensure that the belt is correctly tensioned.
6. Check the lubrication level in the gearbox. Check gearbox seals for any sign of leakage.
10. Remove any build-up of rubbish from the ride which may present a fire risk.
ELECTRICAL EXAMINATION
Electrical examination should only be carried out by a suitably qualified electrician who is competent in the
testing of portable appliances.
1. Check the mains input lead for signs of damage and that correct polarity has been observed.
2. Check all electrical connections for tightness and integrity. Check for any signs of damp, corrosion or
over-heating.
3. Ensure all metal parts of the machine such as the base, stem or metal parts attached thereto which could
come into contact with or have connection to components which are supplied by mains voltage, are
securely earthed. All earth connections should be checked to ensure they are secure and free from dirt
or corrosion.
4. Check the condition of all internal wiring. Ensure correct polarity has been observed.
5. Check the rating of all lamps and fuses to ensure the correct type and rating are installed.
6. Check the mains cable is secured to the ride using a cable restraint that is of the correct type.
7. A portable appliance test should be carried out to determine earth continuity and insulation protection.
Instruments used to determine the test result should be capable of providing a reading that will
determine if the earth protection of the ride is deteriorating.
Only to be carried out by a competent person. (In the UK registered through BACTA under the Amusement
Device Inspection Procedure Scheme).
1. Carry out an inspection of fibreglass structures. Pay attention to any damaged fibreglass which should
be repaired. Also be aware that older fibreglass can become weak through ageing or weathering and
may need to be strengthened.
2. Ensure all fittings used are secured and are safe to continue in use.
3. Ensure all warning signs are affixed, are legible and undamaged.
4. Ensure all lights, coin mechanism, sound button or any electrics accessible to children are supplied at
12V.
5. Ensure any guards, safety devices and protective covers are working and in good condition.
When all the above tests have been carried out, consider whether there are any other issues which could cause
the machine to be unsafe to use.
The above list is only a general guideline and ride inspectors must use their own experience and discretion to
ensure that a machine is safe to continue in use.
When all tests have been carried out the ride should be re-assembled and tested using a weight in excess
of 51 Kg.
Ensure the ride is safe in operation and stable when in use. Operate any safety related devices i.e. emergency
stops and cut-outs and ensure they operate correctly.
When testing has been completed a written record of annual inspection should be compiled and any necessary
safety paperwork issued. In the UK this consists of :-
A) Report of Inspection
B) Declaration of Operational Compliance (D.O.C.)
C) A D.O.C. Sticker (affixed to the ride)
Any paperwork associated with ride inspection should be kept for a minimum of 10 years and available for
inspection by the relevant authorities.
The volume control knob is fitted to the timer which is situated behind the locked black door at the
side of the ride (beneath the printer). Opening this door gives access to live parts. Remove power
supply, open door, adjust volume, close door and check that volume is acceptable
1. replacing the 8 pin IC4 chip with a new one programmed to the desired time
The D plug and micromate programmer are options available at extra cost
1. replacing the 8 pin IC4 chip with a new one programmed to the desired credit setting
2. using the micromate programmer to re-programme the chip IC4 to the desired credit setting
WARNING
The Micromate programmer gives access to vital information on the timer’s memory. This
programmer should only be used by competent persons after consultation with the manufacturers
CARE OF FIBREGLASS
Amutec's kiddie ride toys (not the characters) are manufactured in self coloured GRP. This material
can be maintained to a high standard using the following simple instructions
3. Full Refurbishment
Deep scratches can be removed by using a wet/dry finishing paper. In most cases a 1000 grit should be
used. Very deep scratches can be removed with 600 grit paper. In both cases use with plenty of water.
After rubbing and drying, the fibreglass will look very dull. The gloss surface can be recovered by
polishing using Farecla P315 and P615 with water and preferably a high speed buffing wheel
(approximately 1800rpm). Amutec recommend Farecla G mops for high speed buffing
Holes in Fibreglass
Small holes in fibreglass caused by vandalism etc. can be filled using car body filler available from
any good automotive outlet. This should be rubbed down to a smooth finish using 600 then 1000 grit
wet/dry finishing paper. When completed, these holes can be painted with touch up paint (see paint
pantone reference sheet). If any fibreglass damage causes a weakening of the fibreglass structure,
manufacturer’s advice should be sought prior to carrying out any repair work
Day to Day Cleaning - clean with a damp cloth. In the event of damage to paintwork this can be re-
touched using Amutec touch up paint. Please state colour required.
Never apply thinners to the painted surfaces
The mechanism used on all Amutec rides is designed for low maintenance. Whenever the ride is
stripped for refurbishment check the following:-
2. tightness of pulleys
3. lubrication in bearings
Check the cable for signs of wear every time the machine is emptied (maximum of 1 month)
Check the fuse rating is correct and the mains plug is in good condition every time the machine is
emptied (maximum of 1 month)
Check the condition of the earth bond and earth leakage using a calibrated portable appliance tester
every six months
Carry out full electrical inspection every year (see pages 8/9)

This section is intended to help the user get the most from the S1 acceptor mechanism. It discusses the adjustments
and maintenance of the acceptor and related components. No applications section can be complete, however, and
customers are always very welcome to contact us direct.
The frontplate (1/1) is the first check. This prevents entry of oversize, bent or badly distorted coins. The coin
passes onto the run-down track formed by the magnet side (1/6) and the swinging side (1/7) which are held together
by the bulldog clip (1/8). This track is inclined 14º from the horizontal to permit the coins to run down due to
gravity, and 5º from the vertical, so as to check for diameter. As the coin enters the track it passes the washer
catcher (1/11). This has a tooth which engages in the hole in a washer preventing further travel of the washer. At
this point, the coin passes an over diameter stop on the adjustable slider (1/9), which stops the passage of slightly
oversize coins.
If the coin is not over diameter, it passes further to an under diameter check. Here the coin is tilted an extra 4º from
vertical against the under diameter ridge on the slider. Under diameter coins fall past this ridge to be rejected.
The base of the track has an under thickness gate, where thinner coins fall through to reject. The coin deflecting
cones stop over thickness coins in the track by forcing the coins against the under diameter ridge in the slider.
These coins are returned by pressing the reject button (1/4) which splits the track. When the reject button is
released, it is returned to its original position by the button spring (1/2), allowing the acceptor to close up again.
Rejected coins then either exit through a chute at the bottom of the acceptor (indirect reject) or are guided via the
return chute (1/5) through the reject slot in the frontplate, and come to rest in the u-bolt (1/3).
The magnet positioned in the 'magnet-side' (1/6) of the rundown stops all ferromagnetic blanks. These can be
stripped clear by the swinging side (1/7), by pressing the reject button (1/4). The anti-tilt leg (1/10) prevents
cheating the acceptor by tilting the machine to gain acceptance of under diameter coins. If the machine is tilted, the
leg swings across the track and prevents entry of all coins.
The final test is in the black marinyl cradle (1/13 to 1/20). This incorporates a diameter check in the form of a
cradle (1/17) and weight (1/18). Under diameter coins fall straight through the cradle and fail to actuate the
microswitch (1/19). The true coin then passes through an interlock mechanism (1/15) prior to actuating the
microswitch. This interlock prevents 'coin-on-cotton' cheating and fishing. The coin guide (1/16) is adjusted to
ensure that the coin hits the microswitch arm in the correct position.
If the optional lock out assembly (1/21 to 1/25) is fitted, the lockout arm (1/24) will prevent entry of coins into the
mechanism. To enable coin acceptance, the correct voltage must be applied to the lock out coil (1/22) which will
then withdraw the lock out arm from the coin path.
ADJUSTMENT
The S1 mechanism can be adjusted both for diameter and thickness. The thickness adjustment is done first as this
effects the diameter setting. It is often impossible to do this adjustment whilst the mechanism is still within the
machine. It is therefore advisable that a spare fixed side be carried by a service engineer, so that the swinging side
can be removed from the machine (by removing the bull-dog clip), and temporarily attached to the spare. This will
allow the swinging side to be adjusted outside the machine.
THICKNESS
To adjust the thickness setting, first release the setting screw locknuts. Place a true coin on a track and adjust the
thickness setting to a point where the coin just starts to fall through the coin track at both ends of the track. Before
tightening the locknuts, the screws should be withdrawn just sufficient to allow the good coin to ride on the edge of
the track at the fixed side.
DIAMETER
The diameter setting is adjusted by moving the slider. Release the slider fixing screws, and with a true coin, adjust
the slider so that it is parallel to the base of the coin track, and just stops the coin from falling out of the side of the
run down. Check this at both ends of the track, and if correct, re-tighten the fixing screws. Check both settings
using new and well-worn coins of the correct denomination, and check for rejection of incorrect coins and any
problem blanks.
MICROSWITCH
The microswitch accept chute is adjustable to one of four widths. This is factory adjusted to the correct diameter
and should not require field adjustment.
The microswitch actuating wire should not catch on the side of the black plastic microswitch bracket. At its resting
position, the wire should run along the mid point of a small ridge in the bracket.
The microswitch is available in three different spring tensions - identified by the colour of the plastic boss at the
wires pivot point.
For security reasons, the microswitch with the heaviest tension which still allows the coin to pass is fitted.
Finally, check that the interlock hangs freely as this prevents the coin-on-cotton fiddle.
IF THE ABOVE PROCEDURES ARE NOT SUCCESSFUL, CHECK FOR WORN OR DAMAGED
PARTS AND REPLACE WHERE NECESSARY.
