I had this same problem but i started doing stuff like putting certain notes out of
key and switching up the timing

Try transposing it to another area of the harmony. Up a 3rd, down a third etc.

Try playing some notes that don't belong to that key and figuring out which chords
fit to those notes. Also try modulling to a different scale.

Try improvising - play and don't stop playing. Even if you're playing random stupid
notes doesn't matter something good will eventually happen XD

It�s ultimately about the harmonic context. A standard C maj pentatonic can sound
nursery rhyme-ish until you put a Bb in the bass and get a lovely Lydian sound.

Study the melodic contour of some of your favorite songs (where the melodies work
for you). By contour, I mean the arc of the interval sequences. Are there wide
jumps/drops? Similarly, look at the rhythm. Also, keep an eye out for the power of
accidental notes outside the key. Absorb your observations and try to use it when
experimenting/writing.
