Dear Members of our Parish Family,
Peace and all good!
And Happy Feast Day! This weekend and week we
celebrate two very important holy days in our Catholic
Christian tradition. No, Halloween is not one of them. I’m
thinking more in terms of All Saints Day (November 1) and
All Souls Day (November 2).
In this weekend’s Gospel according to Matthew (5:1-12a),
we listen as Jesus preaches to the crowds his celebrated
Sermon on the Mount. We hear the familiar cadences of the
Beatitudes, the familiar “Blessed’s”, as Jesus summarizes for
us the very practical ways in which we are called to live out
our faith. In a way, these beautiful words are too familiar for
us; the temptation is to race over them instead of taking
time to reflect on their application in our daily lives.
In the sequential celebrations of All Saints and All Souls
Days, we remember and honor all who have gone before us
in faith— especially our family members and friends. Our
faith gives us the confidence that they are at peace and at
home in God’s Love. And our living faith tradition reminds
us that even though we are separated physically by death,
we are always united spiritually, always ‘present’ in God’s
love. We remember in a special way, all who have served
our country in the military—we thank God for the blessings
of freedom that we enjoy through their tremendous
sacrifices on our behalf.
At our bilingual Mass on All Souls Day (7 pm) we will
honor the members of our parish family who have died
during the past year. At the Prayers of the Faithful, we will
present a single rose for those who have died each of the
past past 12 months. And after Mass, we will process to the
Mission Cemetery next door for the lighting of candles and
blessing of the graves by the Franciscan friars. It is a
beautiful parish tradition.
School Notes
Time seems to speed by as everyone
returns to their role of student and teacher
with the days of summer activities a wonderful
memory!
Students are now beginning to settle into
the schedule of their academic year. These past two months
have been extremely busy with welcoming our newest as
well as our returning students and families, through
orientations, Back to School Night, PTG (Parent-Teacher
Group) meetings, Peace Assembly, Welcome Mass, Eighth
Grade Recognition Assembly, Campaign Week for Electing
Student Council, St. Francis’ Day, preparing our Sports teams
for Flag Football and Volleyball, our student’s for Sunday
Choir, and this past week we completed our
fall Standardized Tests!
Without a doubt everyone including the parents has en-
tered into yet another energetic school year, ready to work
in partnership in their child’s on-going faith-filled education.

Elsewhere in the Parish
Congratulations to our Samoan community for the
successful and impressive celebration of White Sunday
(October 17) in the Parish Chapel. After the prayer service
which involved the participation and sharing of children,
youth, and young adults, everyone was invited to a great
Samoan banquet. Children and youth, dressed in white,
were given places of honor at the feast, which included their
favorite dishes. Many thanks to all who were involved in this
beautiful afternoon of worship.
This past weekend (October 22-23) the Hispanic
community sponsored its first Women’s Retreat. More than
200 women participated in the event, which took place at
the McKeon Center and Parish Chapel. I was invited to give
a presentation on our parish renewal process (“Rebuild My
Church”), while Sr. Gloria Galván spoke of “New Life in Jesus
Christ” and Sr. Haydee Salgado spoke of “The Love of God”
and “Women with a Purpose”. Dinner, lunch, and liturgies
involved the men of the community as cooks and servers.
The entire event was superbly organized and realized. What
an incredible display of community love, friendship, and
unity. Special thanks to the organizing committee.
OLG Sports Court/ Parking Lot. We had a great kickoff
presentation for this project which will benefit every part of
our parish family, especially our children and young people.
At the 10 AM and 12 Noon Masses this past weekend,
representatives of parish groups presented “checks” totaling
$84,100, or (25%) of the total budget of $330,000 for the
effort. Many thanks for your prayers, help, and donations.
And special thanks to all who were involved in the
fun-raisers since February. Please consider making a
donation. Thank you. We’re off to a great start!

Last spring some very dedicated parents and our middle
school teachers collaborated on an application for a grant
through the Cox Kids Foundation. In late August Cox Kids
Foundation formally announced that we were a recipient to
be awarded a portion of the available funds set aside for the
Innovative Education Grant. As you can imagine WE were
absolutely delighted to gain some funding to further
enhance our Middle School curriculum with the use of Smart
Boards, a versatile technological device that has endless
educational possibilities. Our students, parents and
teachers are very grateful and thoroughly energized to
explore these possibilities now and in the future.
We have certainly received many blessings this past year;
it began with the support of our parents and has continued
through the outpouring of support from our community at
Mission San Luis Rey! Thank you would be the appropriate
words, but mere words could never truly convey the depth
of our gratitude at being part of this gracious, vibrant
community. May God continue to bless all within his care!

COMMEMORATION
November is the month when we spend a great
deal of time remembering, praying for, and
honoring friends and family who have passed on.
A wonderful way to memorialize a loved one is
through our Walk of Faith program. You choose
the wording you would like and select the space that you
would like the brick placed. Take a moment to see the me-
morials already in place just outside the rotunda of the Serra
Center and consider this lasting tribute. Purchase forms are
available in the kiosk in the rotunda.
The Feast of All Souls – A Bilingual Mass of
Remembrance
Tuesday, November 2, 2010,
at 7:00 p.m. at Serra Center
followed by candle lit visit at 8:00 p.m. into the
Mission Cemetery. Candles will be available for
sale in the Cemetery for you to place at the
memorial place of your loved one. Call the parish

information on the blessing of graves.
Las Madrinas Altar Society Meeting
The next Las Madrinas Altar Society
meeting will be on Tuesday, November 2 at
1:00 p.m. in the Parish Dining Room. Plans for
the Christmas Party in December will be
discussed. We look forward to seeing you there!

Quarterly Leadership Meeting

Estimados Miembros de la Familia Parroquial,
¡Paz y Todo Bien!
¡Y Feliz Día de Fiesta! Este fin de semana y durante esta se-
mana nosotros celebramos dos días de fiesta bien importan-
tes en nuestra tradición Cristiana Católica. No, “Halloween”
no es una de ellas. Yo me estoy refiriendo al Día de Todos los
Santos (el primero de noviembre) y al Día de Todos los Fieles
Difuntos (el día segundo de noviembre).
En el Evangelio de este fin de semana de acuerdo a Mateo
(5:1-12a), nosotros escuchamos a Jesús predicándole a la
multitud su Sermón de la Montaña tan celebrado. Nosotros
escuchamos las cadencias familiares de las Beatitudes, las
“Benditas” familiares, mientras Jesús nos resume las formas
bien prácticas como nosotros estamos llamados a vivir nues-
tra fe. En cierto modo, estas palabras hermosas son dema-
siado comunes para nosotros; la tentación es leerlas rápida-
mente en vez de tomar tiempo y reflexionar sobre cómo
aplicarlas en nuestra vida diaria.
En la secuencia de estas celebraciones de Todos los Santos y
de Todos los Fieles Difuntos, nosotros recordamos y honra-
mos a todos los que nos han precedido en la fe—
especialmente a nuestros miembros de la familia y a los ami-
gos. Nuestra fe nos da la confianza de que ello están en paz
y en la casa de Dios, en el amor de Dios. Nuestra tradición
viva de fe nos recuerda que a pesar de estar separados físi-
camente por la muerte, nosotros estamos unidos siempre
espiritualmente, siempre “presentes” en el amor de Dios.
Nosotros recordamos en forma especial a todos los que han
servido a nuestro país en la milicia—le damos gracias a Dios
por la bendición de la libertad que disfrutamos debido a los
sacrificios tremendos que ellos hicieron por nosotros.
Durante la Misa bilingüe del Día de Todos Los Fieles Difuntos
(7 PM), nosotros honraremos la memoria de los miembros
de nuestra familia parroquial que han fallecido durante los
doce meses pasados. Después de al Misa, nosotros procede-
remos al Cementerio de la Misión para prender las velas y
para que las tumbas sean bendecidas por los frailes Francis-
canos. Esta es una tradición parroquial muy hermosa.

Felicitamos a la Comunidad Samoana por su celebración
tan exitosa y tan impresionante del Domingo en Blanco
(octubre 17) en la Capilla Parroquial. Después del servicio
de oración que incluía la participación y el compartir de los
niños, de los adolescentes y de los adultos jóvenes, todo el
mundo fué invitado a un gran banquete. A los niños y a los
jóvenes, vestidos de blanco, se les dieron lugares de honor
en la fiesta, lo cual incluía sus platillos favoritos. Muchas
gracias a todos los que participaron en esta tarde de adora-
ción tan hermosa.
Este fin de semana pasado (22-23 de octubre) la Comuni-
dad Hispana patrocinó su Primer Retiro de Damas. Más de
200 damas participaron en el evento el cual se llevó a cabo
en el Centro McKeon y en la Capilla Parroquial.

Yo fui invitado a dar una presentación sobre nuestro proceso
parroquial de renovación (“Reconstruye Mi Iglesia”), mientras
la Hna. Gloria Galván habló sobre “Vida Nueva en Cristo
Jesús” y la Hna. Haydee Salgado habló sobre “El Amor de Dios
y Mujeres con Propósito.” La comida, el almuerzo y las litur-
gias envolvió a los hombres de la comunidad como cocineros
y como servidores. El evento total fue organizado y llevado a
cabo magníficamente. ¡Qué despliegue increíble de amor, de
amistad y de unidad de una comunidad! Gracias especiales al
comité organizador.
Cancha Deportiva “Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe”/
Estacionamiento. Nosotros tuvimos una gran celebración de
iniciación presentando este proyecto el cual beneficiará toda
nuestra familia parroquial, especialmente a nuestros niños y
gente joven,. En la Misa de 10 AM y de 12 del Mediodía de
este fin de semana pasado, los representantes de varios gru-
pos entregaron “cheques” por un total de $84,000 o sea, el
25% del presupuesto total de $330,000 para este esfuerzo.
Muchas gracias por sus oraciones, su ayuda y sus donativos. Y
gracias especiales a todos los que estuvieron envueltos en
esta campaña de levantar fondos desde febrero. Por favor
consideren hacer una donación. Gracias. ¡Ya iniciamos un
gran comienzo!

Reunión Trimestral de Líderes
Sábado, 13 de noviembre del 2010
La RTL es una buena forma para que el liderazgo parroquial
se mantenga en contacto con lo que está pasando en la parro-
quia. El RTL es auspiciado por el Comité de Consejo Parroquial.
La inscripción comienza a las 8:45 a.m. La reunión comienza
puntualmente a las 9:00 a.m. y concluye a las 12:00 del medio-
día. Se proveerán bocadillos y refrigerios en el comedor parro-
quial a las 10:30 a.m. Acompáñenos a escuchar presentaciones
de algunos de nuestros ministerios. Nuestro presentador princi-
pal, el Padre Charles (Chuck) Talley estará presentando, a nivel
personal y parroquial, el renovar el espíritu Franciscano en nues-
tra vida Cristiana.
Conmemoración
El mes de noviembre es cuando nosotros pasamos un tiempo
significativo recordando, orando por, y honrando a familiares y
amigos que ya han fallecido. Una forma maravillosa de hacerles
honor a nuestros seres queridos es por medio de nuestro pro-
grama de “El CAMINO DE FE.” Ustedes escogen las palabras que
deseen y seleccionan el espacio donde su ladrillo va a ser coloca-
do. Tomen un momento para ver los ladrillos existentes localiza-
dos afuera de la puerta principal del Centro Serra y consideren
en hacerles este tributo. Las formas de compra están disponibles
en el quiosco en la rotonda.
