Unit of work: Spreadsheets – Disco model PoS/QCA ref:
2.2 C Test predictions and discover patterns and relationships, exploring,
evaluating and developing models by changing their rules and values.
Learning Objectives (WALT) Learning outcomes (WILF)
• Identify the parts of a spreadsheet ALL
• Revise basic formula functions - i.e. • Can identify the different parts of a spreadsheet
Sum, Average, Absolute cell Most
referencing • Recall previous understanding of spreadsheet formulas
• Take on-screen tests All

• Complete all 3 on-screen tests.

Background: 7LM – This is the first lesson of a new scheme of work on spreadsheets. 7LM have done some spreadsheet
work before, but this unit will consolidate and address any misconceptions. The first lesson is an on screen test of
spreadsheets, the pupils will revise what they covered in the previous lessons and then they will take a short on screen test.
Health and safety:
Normal ICT Suite rules, no food no drinks, bags safely under table and coats on back of chairs, no running in ICT room.
Starter: Time: Real time
 Take register 10 mins|09:05
 Teacher led class discussion on different parts of a spreadsheet. Show Teacher resources.ppt
slide 1 and as a class go through the different parts of a spreadsheet – Row, Column, name box
etc.
Development 1:
• Tell pupils that they will now need to complete the worksheet: 5 mins|09:15
The_Parts_of_a_spreadsheet.doc – show them where to find the file in the shared area
• Set timer 5 mins.
Development 2:
• Get pupils attention 5 mins|09:20
• Show them how to do SUM, Average, MIN and MAX in Excel
• Tell pupils that they now need to complete task 1 from file Task 1.xls 5 mins|09:25
• Set timer 5 mins

Development 3:

• Get pupils attention 5 mins|09:30

• Go through Relative and Absolute cell reference with pupils
• After explaining absolute cell referencing to pupils show them example of how to do this in an 5 mins|09:35
excel spreadsheet
• Tell pupils that they now need to complete task 2 from file Task 1 and 2.xls which is on the
same workbook (task 2 sheet)
• Set timer 5 mins

Development 4: 15 mins|09:40
• Summative Assessment
• Individual pupil test
• Pupils will take 3 on-screen tests
Plenary: 10 mins|09:55
• Question: Ask 2 pupils at random to explain in their own words – the difference between
absolute and relative cell reference?

Homework:
• Explain the advantages of using a spreadsheet to organize a school trip.
Differentiation:
Targeted support for SEN students – the teacher will go round to pupils individually to offer help. To accommodate the
visual learners there are several demonstrations by the teacher to aid understanding.

• Help sheets are available for the less able students via the shared area -
The_Parts_of_a_spreadsheet_differentiated.doc
Pupils working at higher levels are expected to go through the task sheets and progress on to the on screen tests.
• LSA: Mr. M. Halfyard to support pupils that need help

Numeracy opportunities: Sum, Average, Minimum, Literacy opportunities: N/A

Maximum, BODMAS rule.

Assessment: There are assessment opportunities through the summative on screen tests.
