ELECTION DAY

Moral Lesson:

According to Walt Whitman, I know nothing grander, better exercise, better digestion, more
positive proof of the past, the triumphant result of faith in human kind, than a well-contested…election.

Election has been passed on from generation to generation of a civilized society. Indeed, it is a
positive proof of the past. Our forefathers have entrenched the positive values coinciding elections like
faith, freedom, hope and truth.

Faith is a higher faculty than reason. It reflects the incomprehensibility of God. According to the
Bible, we walk by faith, not by sight. Man is naturally a cynic; he wants pitifully to believe in himself, in
his future, in his community. In simple terms, faith as explained by John Dewey, means not worrying.
Faith is not belief. Belief is passive. Faith is active. It is vision which passes inevitably into action.

Freedom is not merely a word or an abstract theory, but the most effective instrument for
advancing the welfare of man. (John F. Kennedy). Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for
themselves, and, under a just God cannot long retain it. More importantly, the only freedom which
deserves the name, is that of pursuing our own good in our own way, so long as we do not attempt to
deprive others of theirs, or impede their efforts to obtain it.

Hope is itself a species of happiness, and, perhaps the chief happiness which this world
affords.(Samuel Johnson). Man is, properly speaking, based upon hope; he has no other possession but
hope; this world of his is emphatically the place of hope. We all live on hope.

The truth is often a terrible weapon of aggression. It is possible to lie, and even to murder, with
the truth. (Alfred Adler). The best of truth is the power of the thought to get itself accepted in the
competition of the market, and the truth is the only ground upon which their wishes safely can be
carried out.

During election, we place our faith on the voters for the hope of our country. We exercise our
freedom to choose the deserving leaders. The truth must prevail as to who really wins. These are the
values and moral lessons we can get from Elections.

Recommendations

We recommend more voter’s education program to instill to the people the noble duty to vote.
This will help minimize the performance of the prohibited activities like vote buying.
Since vote buying is rampant in our community, we recommend strict monitoring and heavier
penalties.
Overall, we recommend vigilance among citizens and honest performance of duty for the
election officials on the forthcoming elections.
