Areas of OBSERVATION to include:
1. Make a scale drawing of the classroom. If possible, make your drawing in the morning before
the students arrive or after they have left at the end of the day.
Include:
a. Date, school location and grade level, subject/course
i. 10/24/18
ii. Liberty High School
iii. Math grades 9-12
iv. Algebra, College Prep Math, Math 126/127 (Dual Enrollment)
b. From your perspective, what would you do to improve the classroom’s physical layout?
Would you add anything? Would you eliminate anything?
i. I think that classroom had a great layout that made sense. It was very organized
and easy to maneuver around.
2. Now analyze your drawing. To what extent does this classroom reflect the following five keys
to good room arrangement?
a. Use a room arrangement consistent with our instructional goals and activities.
i. The arrangement made sure the board was easily accessible to all the students
and was very organized.
b. Keep high traffic areas free of congestion.
i. There was a large opening by the front of the room and by the door that made it
easy for students to get to their desks or the teacher’s desks.
c. Be sure students are easily seen by the teacher.
i. Students were in pairs and all facing the front of the room. The teacher’s desk
was in the corner facing the students.
d. Keep frequently used teaching materials and student supplies readily accessible.
i. The teacher kept a table at the front that had all the supplies the students might
need. She also had one spot where students turned in work, retrieved old notes,
and retrieved previous assignments.
e. Be certain students can easily see instructional presentations and displays.
i. All of the desks were facing the front of the room and had easy access to the board.
Summarize what you have found about the students in this class. Who are they and what is it like to
“live” in this school?
• The students in the class were mostly engaged and tried to learn the subject. A
couple students pointed out that it was their favorite class. The freshman
students seemed to not care as much as the upperclassmen. The teacher
pointed out that everyone in her dual enrolment class finished the quarter
with a C or higher. She encourages a class that is organized and participates.
She also warns her students to not use their phones, and takes them away
when needed.
