Observation Details
This is a US History class with 20 students: 12 boys and 8 girls. Students are arranged in small groups of either two or three
students. Students are tasked with developing a thesis statement by taking a stand on a historical issue (Attitudes of settlement
house social reformers towards immigrants.)

Summary of observation and feedback

Mr. Kirkland demonstrated that he was prepared and organized for the lesson. He had the plans listed on the LED projector and
screen accompanied with hand-outs. The students were organzied in pairs or threes which contributed to lively discussions on
the historical question used to develop a thesis. The students were asked to use higher level thinking skills, coordinate with
documents and a thinking chart, and put their discussion into writing by completing a thesis statement. They also shared their
points of view through "counterpoints" with other groups.
The Learning Environment was informal and open sharing of ideas and attitudes. Students appeared comfortable with the
teacher and their classmates. The result was the students worked throughout the time frame to complete the assignment.
Expectations were clearly outlined both on the screen and with constant reinforcement from the teacher. He used opportunities
from student questions to clarify the tasks, gave time frames, and directed them throughout the lesson as to how they could
complete their thesis successfully. As a result the students were fully engaged, collaborated each other appropriately, and for
the most part completed their tasks.
Overall, Mr. Kirkland demonstrated that he is a competent, organized, and relevant teacher of social studies.
