Working with words

Skill Lesson

Dictionary skills, parts of speech

A dictionary is a book with many words in it. The dictionary

tells you how to spell each word, how to say it, what part of

speech it is, and what it means. Sometimes, the dictionary

will give a sentence that uses the word in it.

A. Using a Dictionary – You can find out a lot about a word in each dictionary entry. An entry is the word
and all the information. Look at the entry below.

1 2 3
sleepy adjective 1. Ready for or needing sleep. 2. Quiet; inactive:
4 The train sounded loud as it passed through the sleepy town.
sleep*y (sle´ pe) Ø adjective sleepier, sleepiest
5 6 7

1. entry word 5. syllables

2. part of speech 6. pronunciation
3. definitions 7. other forms
4. example sentence

Answer these questions.

1. How many definitions are there for sleepy? ____________

2. What part of speech is sleepy? _________________

3. How many other forms of the word are given? ___________

B. Alphabetical Order – The words in a dictionary are listed in alphabetical order. This means the order
of the words follows the order of the ABC’s. To find a word in the dictionary, you use alphabetical order.
For example, the following words are in alphabetical order:
apple
happy
run
You can look at the first letter of each word and see that they follow the order of the alphabet. So, the
word apple comes before the word happy in a dictionary. The word happy comes before run.
It is good to practice this skill to help you to use a dictionary. Here are some samples to try. One list
below is in alphabetical order. Which is it?
Circle your answer.
List 1 List 2 List 3
disturb runaway calm
unite enjoy miserable
pinpoint worthless tidy

Now look at the following list of words. Look at the first letter of each word an put the list in alphabetical
order.
List 4
unlike ________________

dull ________________

increase ________________

Sometimes two words in a list may begin with the same letter. When that happens, you need to look at
the second letter to help you put the words in alphabetical order. For example, both of the following
words begin with the letter c. You need to look at the second letter to put the words in alphabetical order:
child
cold
Now you try. Put these words in alphabetical order. Remember, sometimes you may need to look at the
second letter.

Sometimes words in a list have more than just the first two letters in common. In that case, keep looking
at the next letters until you find the ones that are different. Use those letters to help you to put the words
in alphabetical order. The words below are in alphabetical order.

judge mislead coffee

jump mister coffin

C. Verbs – An important thing to know about a word is its part of speech, that is, the job it has to do in a
sentence. For example, a verb is an action word. It tells about what someone or something does. The
words go, sleep, and sit are all verbs.

Here is a list of words. Which ones are verbs? Circle the verbs.

say run boy big yes jump eat great bed

In the lessons that follow, you will learn words you can use instead of the word say. Each word describes a
way of saying that is a bit different. Here are the words you will be learning. Circle the ones you have heard
or seen before. Then put all the words in alphabetical order.

D. Adjectives - Another part of speech a word can be is an adjective. An adjective’s job is to describe
something. For example, crazy, rich, and sick are all adjectives. They tell you what something is like.
Circle the adjectives in the following list.

car pretty see nice tall flower hot climb

Some adjectives describe how people feel. A person might feel happy, sad, or angry. You will learn some
new words that describe people’s feelings. These words are listed below. Circle the ones you have heard or
