Reflective Analysis of SkiUs Development

Description of Approach and Performance

I have been passionate about coadhiing and teaching from a young age and I have

been able to develop my knowledge and understanding of these skills during my


time at university. Undertaking a placement at Grammar school as a member of
the PE department allowed me to gain valuablle experience of being a full
time teacher and if teaching this age group is the right path to follow in my career. I
assisted wiith lessons as wellll as being able to lead some sessions myself as the

placement progressed. I also gained a greater understanding of other aspects of the


job such as lesson preparation, and marking work as well as gaining an insight into
roles such being a form tutor or head of year. A combinatiion of teachiing lessons and
experienciing trie other roles that a re part of being a teacher allowed me to develop

my work specific skills.

Completing my placement at grammar school allowed me to develop


by work specific s kills in rellation to teaching. I believe that my placement has allowed
me to improve my work specific skills, as this was the first time I had ever worked in
a secondary school setting and it therefore helped me to improve teaching skills that
I had not previously been able to develop. These teaching skills are vital if I want to
work in this setting, as a good standard of teaching is key to provide children with a
good education {Rivkin, Hanuske, & IKain, 2005). Rivkin, et al. (2005) found that
increasing teacher quality ,just one standard deviation,. had more positive effect on
pupil attainment than reduce class size by ten pupils, proving how significant high
quality teaching is in pupils llearning and subsequently there about to be successful
in later life. Also the other aspects of the role I was exposed to h elped me to develop
these work specific skills. II was able to learn how parts of the job such as lesson
preparation and being a head of year were done, meaning I will have a greater
understanding of what these roles require in my own teaching career.
