Introduction / History

I joined Y-PEER Nepal and got to spend some time with the whole team, which
worked on one of the SDG’s goal which was regarding Sexual and Reproductive
Health Rights. It aims to promote a healthy life style through peer to peer approach
and to empower young people to make responsible decisions. The Network
advocates for increased access to information, knowledge, and services on sexual
and reproductive health, strengthening the knowledge base of peer educators and
trainers of trainers, promoting communication and sharing experiences between
global Y-PEER network, contributing to national strategies development and
improving training resources for peer educators. Selected Y-PEER members are
volunteers, active peer educators, and trainers of trainers and youth advocates for
adolescent sexual and reproductive health.
Y-PEER is Global network of Young Peoples & Organizations working in sector of
Young Peoples’ Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) & other issues. Y-
PEER Nepal was officially launched on 3rd December 2010 and Y-PEER Nepal
(Youth Peer Education Association Nepal) on 4th August 2014 among its member
organizations, I/NGOs, UN agencies, media, young people and potential partners. Y-
PEER ‘s mission is to Strengthen and spread high quality peer-to-peer education in
the field of adolescent sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and HIV prevention
worldwide. Y-PEER is unique because it provides peer-to-peer education using
alternative methods of education (such as theatre-based techniques, role games,
simulations, etc.). Y-PEER helps each individual to know more about SRHR and the
current condition of our country in that regarding issue which has helped us all to
know more about it and has broadened our knowledge in that field.

 Understanding on what model does the organization works

 Getting experience as we work for an NGO

ex funding
 Raise self-awareness on the SRHR
 Gain knowledge about the current condition of Sexual and Reproductive
health
 Get ideas to implement projects that possibly brings positive changes
 Personal skill development such as public speaking, critical thinking about the
issue
Issues / Challenges:

 Executives were not very comfortable in sharing about the funding

 Limited knowledge on the topic.
 Sensitive nature of SRHR.

Details of Findings

 Networking with other people of the Y- peer

 Ideas sharing and learned about other idea
 Respecting other opinions more critically
 Ideas about how the organization actually worked
 Got familiar and got more knowledge on the topic SRHR and SDG in context
to Nepal

Activities Organized

 10 days of Activism (A global campaign that focused on raising awareness

among young people and society on the issue of young people’s Sexual and
Reproductive Health and rights),
 Published SRH Shabdakosh-A Sexual and Reproductive Health Glossary in
English and Nepali
 Y-PEER Nepal and JCYN (Jagriti Child and Youth Concern Nepal) organized

 3 Days Workshop to Implement 1 Peer 1 School
 Capacity Building of Youth Organizations
 Partnership with Restless Development

These were some of the very few of the successfully organized programs in Nepal
by Y-PEER Nepal in the year 2018.
Conclusion

The field experience was very new to me because I had never actually witnessed the
way an organization worked before, how the funds were being collected and what
programs gets organized successfully was something to look forward to. However,
the coordinators were not very open about how they got the funds to manage so
many events on their own because it was their policy to not discuss about it. They
definitely shared it briefly where they mentioned about a proposal that they
presented to UNDP Nepal (United Nations Development Programme) in order to get
the funds. They also mentioned that many of the projects organized by Y-PEER
Nepal was in partnership with Restless Nepal for which they got many donors
because of their credibility and the projects that they had done in previous years.

Also, the organization has been applying social action approach for their works. It
has also been found that successful and efficient social action projects usually do
not just "happen" but are carefully conceived and planned and this is what they do.
Everything is planned out so it’s easier at the field for getting something done. The
success of the action project depends in large part on how well each of these tasks
is performed but Y-PEER Nepal makes sure that the tasks are being performed well
which ultimately has resulted in positive conclusions for their campaign and works
which I believe needs to be praised. Overall, my time in the organization was worth it
and I have been given many ideas in my head for the future.
