A mixing problem

Problem statement:
An insulated rigid tank is divided into two compartments by a partition. One
compartment contains 2.5 kmol of CO2 at 27oC and 200 kPa, and the other
compartment contains 7.5 kmol of H2 at 40oC and 400 kPa.  The partition is
removed and the gasses are allowed to mix.  After equilibrium has been
established determine:
established, determine:

a) The mixture temperature.
b) The mixture pressure.
c)) The entropy generation.
h

Assume constant specific heats at room temperature for the gases.
Given:
CO2 H2
2.5 kmol 7.5 kmol
27oC 40oC
200kPa 400kPa

To find:
mixture
mixture
T = ? P = ?
Solution:

Consider the conservation of energy. E final = Einitial

For a fixed mass system, during a
process with no work or heat
process with no work or heat
transfer.

Consider the internal energy for each
component.
Represent the change of enthalpy in terms of
specific heats and temperatures.

Note that at equilibrium: TH 2 , final = TCO2 , final = T final

And solve for Tfinal.
Look up the specific heats and plug and chug. Note
that using Celsius is legitimate here because
temperatures were in terms of differences
temperatures were in terms of differences.

⇒ T final = ? ←
In order to determine the pressure, we can use
In order to determine the pressure we can use
the ideal gas equation for the mixture.  Using
molar quantities makes this reasonably easy.

? Ru ?
p=
V

Where:

Ru = 8.314 kJ
kmol ⋅ K
Finally, we need to determine V, the total volume.

V final = ?

For the initial volumes, use the ideal gas equation.
, g q

V final = ?+ ?

V final = ?

⇒ V final = 80m3
Now that we have all the pieces
Now that we have all the pieces,

nmix RuT final

p= =?
V final

Entropy change can be viewed as the entropy
Entropy change can be viewed as the entropy
change for each component.

ΔSmix = ΔS H 2 + ΔSCO2
The entropy change for an ideal gas is described
Th h f id l i d ib d
by the equation,
⎛ T final pi , final ⎞
ΔSi = ni ⎜ c p ,avg ln − Ru ln ⎟⎟
⎜ Ti ,initial pi ,initial
⎝ ⎠

pi , final = ?

ΔSi = ni ( c p ,avg ln?− Ru ln? )

For CO2,
ΔSCO2 = ?

For H2,
ΔS H 2 = ?

⇒ ΔS N2 = 27.42 kJ
K

∴ΔSmix = ΔS H 2 + ΔSCO2 = ? kJ ←
