11. a) i. What is meant by principle of transmissibility of force? Write the

12. a) Two smooth spheres each of the radius 40cm and weight 30KN rest in a horizontal
channel having vertical walls. The distance between the two vertical walls is 140cm.
determine the reaction at the walls and in the horizontal position. 10M

b) A cylinder weighing 100N and 1.5m in the diameter is supported by a beam AB of

length 6M and weight 40N as shown in the Fig. Neglect friction at the surface of

contact of the cylinder, determine

i. wall reaction at D
ii. tension in the cable BC
iii. Hinge reaction at support A . 10M

13. a) Determine the force P required to start the wedge as shown inFig. The angle of
friction for all surfaces of contact is 150. 10M

OR

b) A 75N block is to be pushed up an incline plane 5 m long that makes an angle of 20° with

the horizontal. If the coefficient of static friction between the block and the inclined plane is

0.20, how much force must be given to get it started up the incline? If the coefficient of

kinetic friction is 0.15, how much applied force is needed to keep it going at a constant speed

up the incline.
14. a) Determine the centroid of the shaded area shown in the fig. 10M
