the book.
The week we went on the trip to visit where mother grew up, we shopped for gifts for our
family. Then in our band-new clothes, we flew a day and night and a day, wiping our faces
with hot towels. when we arrived to Korea, we gave our family the gifts, they gave us hugs,
every morning, my grandfather woke me up so I could watch him push a fresh charcoal into a
tunnel near the house. Everyday before shopping with my grandmother, I fed the hungry pigs.
My grandmother and I walked up the rough dirt road to the outdoor market, back at home
grandma made a fire in the stove with pine branches I gathered. After we ate, my grandmother
and mother and aunt and I would sit in the afternoon sun, sewing war clothes for winter, while
grandpa crouched on the roof. He sandwiching persimmons in straw, where they would be
stored all autumn. Every evening we sat in a circle, sometimes we listened to grandpa’s
stories, with mother laughing hard and me laughing hard, too. Sometimes we played hato, a
game of cards with pictures of flowers and deep and hills and the moon. And always, every
evening, aunt would find some quiet and we would sit close, reading her book together, until
we went to sleep. This was how they passed the time with us, and this is how we passed the
time with them. Until the day to make our trip back home, and our family give us present,
grandpa give us a charcoal drawing of the hills behind the house, grandma a dried persimmon
strung together in a necklace, and aunt a poem in Korean, and we give them hugs.
