BOOK EXTENSION ACTIVITY - LESSON PLAN

2. Objectives:
SWBAT -
 Students will learn about a famous
 Students will be able to create their own telescope.

3. Materials/Equipment:
 Cardboard tube
 Paint
 Paint brush
 Markers
 Stickers
 Pictures of planets and the moon.

4. Teaching:
A. Reading the book
 Start by showing the cover of the book and ask students what they see on the cover of the
book. Read the title of the book and ask students if they know who was Galileo, discuss
their answer for a few minutes. Start reading the book and stop after each page, each page
has important information. After reading the 1st page ask students what they love to
explore and investigate and with support compare to what Galileo loved. On the next ask
students what they know now about Galileo have a few minutes to discuss. Continue
reading and when finished the next page ask students what they think about Galileo
experiment, what they think people said after seen the results. Continue reading and stop
after read the next page ask student what they learn from that page, what was new to
them. Continue reading and after each page ask the same question what they learn and
what was interested to them. After reading about the four-moon moon in Jupiter stop and
ask them how many moons do we have. What is the shape of the moon, and them to talk
with the person next to them and describe the moon?. Continue reading and having
discussion about what they found interested in the text. After reading the book ask
students what they know now about Galileo discuss their answers, them ask if they know
that Jupiter has four moons, show them pictures. Ask students if they know what a
telescope is, if they have had one before.

B. Extension activity:
 Ask each the children if they have made a telescope before, or if they have look planets in
a telescope. Show pictures of planets, the moon and the sun to the children, with help and
support ask them to name them. Tell students to look around the classroom for the
pictures of the planets. When children have found the pictures ask them to guess what are
we going to do. After discuss their answers. Tell students that they will create their own
telescope. Give each children a carboard tube, give them paint, paint brushes and markers
and stickers. Give them about 20 minutes to work on, walk around to see if students need
help. Ask students to raise their hand when they have finished. After all students have
finished their work, ask students to get in groups of three or four. Walk around and find
the pictures of the moon, sun, and planets with their telescopes. After they have seen all
the pictures, each student will share with their group what is their favorite planet?

5. Closure:

 Share their work with their friends, they will take their work home and watch the start in
the night. The next day they will share with the class what they saw.
