INSTRUCTIONAL PROJECT 4 LESSON PLAN

DATE: 05.04.2019

TEACHER’S NAME: Sumeyye H. UNAL

LESSON PLAN TYPE: Cooperative Learning

GRADE: 6

SUBJECT / TOPIC / SUBTOPIC: Basic Science and Technology / Pollution / Types

of pollution and How to prevent from them

TIME LINE: Two 35 minutes or one 70 minutes

TEKS OBJECTIVES: Abilities necessary to do scientific inquiry, Understanding

about scientific inquiry. Science as inquiry is basic to science education and a
controlling principle in the ultimate organization and selection of students' activities.
The standards on inquiry highlight the ability to conduct inquiry and develop
understanding about scientific inquiry. Students at all grade levels and in every
domain of science should have the opportunity to use scientific inquiry and develop
the ability to think and act in ways associated with inquiry, including asking
questions, planning and conducting investigations, using appropriate tools and
techniques to gather data, thinking critically and logically about relationships
between evidence and explanations, constructing and analyzing alternative
explanations, and communicating scientific arguments.

AIM/ LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Students will learn about what causes water
pollution and how to be environmentally aware by using a prototype game created
on Scratch, doing an activity and then working on a worksheet.

LESSON OBJECTIVES: By the end of this lesson, students should be able to;
• To be able to describe what pollution is.

• To be able to know the different types of pollution.

• To be able to list the sources and the effects for the different types of pollution.

RATIONALE: Pollution has become a large problem and is causing great harm to
our environment. Children of today need to know the different types of pollution and
the sources of the pollution. They also need to know preventative
measures so that they can protect the environment from further damage.
MATERIALS:

1. Dish washing liquid, soil, vegetable oil (to pollute water samples)
2. Tap water
3. 6 Glass jars or clear plastic cups
4. 1 spoon or 1 per group
5. Coffee filter paper
6. Pen and paper
7. Active board
8. Worksheet: Water Pollution • Samples of litter found on the beach. (As part of
the exercise it is useful to have some samples in reserve)

INTRODUCTION: Teacher enters the class with a bunch of blank poster paper and
a box of other materials. Students attention was attracted. Before anything else for
the new topic teacher asks some questions, which are related to the previous week’s
topic. She is asking them in order to do a mini revision.

INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES:

1.LECTURE – RECITATION: Teacher starts with the video below to adapt them to
the lesson in shorter time. Teacher tells them the video is about this week’s topic.
And she warns them to watch attentively because they will discuss about the video.

2. GUIDED PROBLEM SOLVING: Teacher shows a game named as “Clean the
Beach”.

Before allowing them to play it, she plays and shows them how to play. After, she
calls a student randomly from the list and assist him/her on the active board, so that
all students can comprehend it better and faster. Then students can play for about
10-15 minutes.
3. DISCUSSION: teacher wants them to discuss about the video and the topic they
think it deals with. And she leads them towards a discussion medium via couple of
questions such as;

Did you like the video?

Which part of the video was the most interesting?

What did you learn newly with the help of this video?

How many types of pollution can you count?

What is pollution?

What causes pollution?

Did you like the game?

What do you like about the game?

Describe the game.

What kind of litter is found on the beach?

What materials are the most harmful

4. COOPERATIVE LEARNING

Modification / Differentiated Instruction: (in each group this experiment is done and
there is no student who needs support or extra easier work for this activity. That’s
why there is no need for modification or differentiated instruction for this lesson)

Teacher tells them to make groups for 4 people. And distributes the materials. 4
clear plastic cups for each group, 1 spoon, 1 coffee filter, water, a handful sand. She
asks help from students to distribute in shorter time.
While they are busy doing the experiment and observing, teacher goes around and
drops a piece of paper for each group as below;
EVALUATION: Teacher asks once again the keywords that have been taught today,
if she fails getting the incomplete answers she repeats again. And finally, she asks
every single student what they learned today. She warns them to try and say
different things.
CLOSURE: Teacher gives them a word search puzzle about Pollution to solve before
they leave the class.
WORKSHEETS: Teacher gives a worksheet as a summary of today’s lesson. And
tells them to paste in their notebook.
ASSIGNMENT: Teacher distributes the white blank poster papers after the
worksheets. And tells the students they will draw a picture about pollution. They
have 1 week, so next week they should come with their drawings. And to be clear
enough teacher shows them a rubric that’s created by the teacher. It helps students
to evaluate their drawing before submission and/or try much better before their
submission.
