LESSON ORGANISATION
Year Level: 4 Students’ Prior Knowledge:

Learning Area: - Students have a clear understanding of the

- Mathematics distinction between perimeter and area, and uses
- Digital Technologies appropriate terminology to describe, and symbols to
- Creative Arts represent, mathematical ideas
- English - students appreciate that formal units are easier and
more accurate communication of measures.
Strand/Topic from the Australian - Students have developed an understanding of the
Curriculum: size of a unit, measure and estimate using the unit,
and select the appropriate unit.
Mathematics Specific
- Students understand that an area of one square
- Length 2 metre need not be a square.
- Area 1 - Students are being to be able to use mental
strategies and their own informal methods when
doing multiplication and division
General Capabilities (that may potentially be covered in the lesson)

and cultures Asia
Proficiencies: Understanding of what perimeter and area mean and the difference between them. Knowing that
using formal units of measurement is better for accurate communication.
Developing their own mental strategies for multiplication and division, and an understanding that there is multiple
ways to get to a solution. Memorisation of easier multiples 2, 5, 10 etc. Know that multiplication is the inverse of
division, similarly to addition and subtraction. Understanding place value and how to apply this to addition and
subtraction in mental arithmetic.
Use mathematical concepts in everyday life and use technology to explore mathematical problems

Teacher’s Prior Provision for students at educational risk:
Preparation/Organisation: - The application is accessible to everyone (free to download)
- Development of the student’s - The application allows for individuals to access help without
skills using the Home Design 3D others knowing, allowing them to work at their own pace
application, Kahoot and Apple - Because it is on the iPad it allows the settings to be changed so
TV people with visual learning disabilities can change it to suit their
- The students have downloaded needs
the home design app - It is a sit down activity that students only need their fingers to
- The students have access to the complete
internet - Kahoot allows students to write a name they choose protecting
- Rubrics are made and printed their identity if they don’t wish to share their results
for the students to use

LESSON ONE DELIVERY (attach worksheets, examples, marking key, etc, as

relevant)
Resources/References
Time Motivation and Introduction:

In this first lesson we will be doing a brief quiz using Kahoot so the teacher
5mins
can see the level everyone is at and if the class needs to go over anything.

All students will be sitting on the floor and will be invited to go get their iPads iPad - Kahoot
in groups and once they come back to the floor they will need to open up Teacher – iPad/PC and
Kahoot on their web browser (go onto google and type in https://kahoot.it/ and Projector
enter the game pin displayed on the whiteboard.
The game used in called ‘Area & Perimeter!’ by zzaraking

Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key Questions):

5mins Before starting check that everyone is able to connect to the game and
students have an appropriate display name.

Kahoot will then start and the students will have to pick the answer that they
believe is most correct before the timer runs out and proceeds to the next
5mins question.
At the end of the game the game will display a winner on the main whiteboard
and will display each child’s place on their individual iPad. The students will
have the choice on whether they share this information.

After the game finishes as a class we will then go through each question
10mins spending more time on the questions more of the students got wrong.

The questions included are:

Q1: What is the definition of a perimeter?
Q2: What is the definition of an area?
Q3: What unit of measurement does the perimeter use?
Q4: What unit of measurement does the area use?
Q5 – Q14 include example are asking
Q: What is the area of this shape?
Q: What is the perimeter of this shape?

During this time the students will be allowed to take notes on their iPads and
use it as a resource for the next lesson.

Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students)

5mins
The students will then be asked:
- What tips they had for others to work out area and perimeter
- What do they now know about perimeter and area
- And what is the connections that they see between perimeter and
area

Transition: (What needs to happen prior to the next lesson?)

5mins
Students will need to screen shot their notes and send it to the teacher before
placing iPads away and returning to the seats.

Assessment: (Were the lesson objectives met? How will these be judged?)
The lesson objectives will be assessed during the Kahoot game as well as the

group discussion and be followed up in the next lesson.

LESSON TWO DELIVERY (attach worksheets, examples, marking key, etc, as relevant)
Resources/References
Time Motivation and Introduction:

During this lesson we will be looking further into perimeter and area and how iPads – Home Design 3D
5mins
they are used together in the practical world as well as allowing all of the
class to demonstrate their creative abilities.

We will be using the Home Design 3D app on the iPads to construct a 1-

bedroom apartment within 100m². This will be done in pairs.

Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key Questions):

First the students will need to draw a rough plan on a spare piece of paper so Paper and Pencil
10mins they are able to estimate what they will be able to do in that space and how to
form that space so it best suits their needs.

Once they have finished the plan and shown it to the teacher they will then
40mins need to get their iPad out to begin constructing their apartment on the
application.
This application includes steps on how to begin using it and tutorial videos for
the students to access if they need help as well as asking the teacher for
assistance. (This app has been used before in this classroom and therefore
will not need a re-introduction)

The criteria for the 1-bedroom apartment includes:

1. A bedroom, bathroom, living/dining area and kitchen
2. Liveable space (lights, refrigerator, bed, windows and doors etc.)
3. Total no more than 100m²

Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students)

10mins
The students will be asked if they hit the criteria above and will then be asked
to share it with a friend. This is done through the application.
The students will peer assess each other work by giving two stars and a wish.

Transition: (What needs to happen prior to the next lesson?)

5mins
Prior to the next lesson the students will need to finalise their apartment,
ensuring they try to achieve the wish from the peer assessment before saving
and putting their iPads away.

Assessment: (Were the lesson objectives met? How will these be judged?)

The assessment for this activity is ongoing and is done through peer reviews
it allows students to briefly assess others ideas before finalising their own
work. It is an informal assessment that works from the criteria given.

LESSON THREE DELIVERY (attach worksheets, examples, marking key, etc, as relevant)
Resources/References
Time Motivation and Introduction:
In this lesson we will be focusing on why builders and quantity surveyors need
these skills of understanding perimeter and area in order to conduct their
5mins
work, i.e. building an apartment, house, building, etc.

Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key Questions):

iPads – Home Design 3D
30mins Using the app; Home design 3D the students will need to work out how much
of what a builder would need to:
1. Cover the floors in each room (by room)
2. Paint the walls (by room)
3. How much grass they would need (if any grass)

After this task is done the students will click on the bottom right hand corner
where the page appears to flick up. This will give them the answers they have Paper and pencil
just worked out and allow them to check their working.
They will then have to construct a document (paper or on the iPad) that
includes the different materials that are used in their apartment and how much
of each material they will need to build in, including working.

Once finished the students will then need to look up what a quantity surveyor
Extra does.

Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students)

10mins
Asking the class why is this information useful in the construction trade? And
how important is it that each m² is accounted for.
Finally, what is a quantity surveyor and why is this information important to
them, and how do they use it?

Transition: (What needs to happen prior to the next lesson?)

5mins
The students will need to finalise their answers and save their work before
printing the word document out and placing it with their iPads away ready for
the next lesson.

Assessment: (Were the lesson objectives met? How will these be judged?)

The lesson objective will be assessed by each individual student by reviewing

their own answers before a group discussion where the students express why
knowing how to work out perimeter and area is important especially in specific
jobs.

5

LESSON FOUR DELIVERY (attach worksheets, examples, marking key, etc, as relevant)
Resources/References
Time Motivation and Introduction:
5mins The objective of this lesson is to showcase the students work and allow their
peers to formally assess the apartments the students have created using the
same rubric that the teacher created to assess the students work. iPads – Home Design 3D

Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key Questions):

10mins As a class the teacher will go through the marking rubric so the class know Marking Rubric
what the teacher and their fellow students are looking for in their
presentations. This is the time questions can be taken about the marking
rubric.
Apple TV linked to the
Over 2 Using the Apple TV in the class room the students will be asked to mirror their Projector
45min iPad and either from their chair or from the front of the room take the class on
lessons a quick tour of their apartment and finish by flicking the screen showing how
much of each material they need to construct their building.

The rest of the class will be in pairs peer reviewing each presentation and
giving in their assessment to the teacher
A class mark will be produced from this to each student.

Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students)

5mins What did they learn about constructing an apartment?

- What were the challenges?
- What did they find easy?
- Why is perimeter and area used?
- What tricks did they learn to be quicker at working them out?

Transition: (What needs to happen prior to the next lesson?)

5mins
Prior to the next lesson they all need to submit to the teacher the rubrics they
used to assess each building and pack away their iPads

Assessment: (Were the lesson objectives met? How will these be judged?)

The lesson objectives were to assess each other’s work and to identify what
they learnt throughout the last 4 lessons. This will be judged through group
discussions and the peer assessment done with the rubric.
