THINGS TO OBSERVE:

Class Demographics:
Number of students present: Student # Female # Male

(1) What kind of rapport does the teacher have with the students? How do they establish or maintain
this rapport? How do the students interact with one another?

Ms. Parsons has pretty good rapport with the students. She greets all of the students either in the
doorway or from her desk as they walk in. She is honest with them about what is expected of them
as seniors and what awaits them in the “real world” as adults after they graduate. She also makes
sure to sign in and visit with each student sometime throughout the class period. She also provides
students with opportunities to get to know her as she shares about her own personal experiences
in the classroom from when she was in high school and what it was like for her as a teenager and
young adult. I noticed that her students actually stopped and listened when she would share with
the class and they would even ask her about things she mentioned.

(2) Does the class feel like a respectful environment where student’s ideas and questions are
supported? Does the teacher listen thoughtfully to students? Provide evidence to support your
answer.

The class does feel like a respectful environment and Ms. Parsons supports each student's ideas
and questions. She gives each student her undivided attention, addresses everyone by first name,
and tries to ask students what’s going on first before assuming they are just off task. She definitely
puts her students first and does her best to understand what could be distracting or troubling them
if they are off-task and trying to find a solution for how to move forward.

(3) How did the teacher start the class? How did he/she introduce the lesson? Would you consider the
start engaging? Explain.

Warm up is projected on the board. She reviews what’s on the whiteboard – intentions/criteria.
Then goes over warm up. Then introduces main activity/topic for the day.

(4) What is the structure of the lesson today? Are student working in groups? Alone? Is the teacher or
are the students doing most of the questioning, talking, and explaining?
Students are usually working in groups or in pairs. Occasionally they are working alone when they
need to have “catch up days” in which students each work at their own pace for either a previous
assignment that was due or going ahead with the new assignment for the new unit.

(5) How does the teacher utilize the classroom space? Does he/she walk around the room, stay in one
place? Explain.

Ms. Parsons is almost always walking around the room when teaching. The only time she sits at her
desk is when taking attendance and/or checking emails while students are settling in at the beginning
of the period. Otherwise, she is always on the move and “making her rounds” as she calls it, checking
in with each table either to check in on how they’re doing or connecting with them by talking about
things not school related such as tv show, food, city events, etc.
