ABSTRACT

Lipstick is cosmetic product that have been most commonly used. The
content of heavy metals such as cadmium in cosmetics is not justified. Cadmium is
a common contaminant found in various cosmetic products. Cadmium in lipstick
goes in to the body through mouth, absorbed through skin, and respiratory.
Knowledge and attitudes of consumer will shape consumer action in choosing a
lipstick product which is safe to use.
The aim of this study is to determine the content and level of cadmium
(Cd) on lipstick, to determine the level of knowledge and attitudes of consumers
towards local lipstick registered and unregistered by the Food and Drug
Supervisory Agency (BPOM).
This study was conducted at Petisah Market Medan. It was a descriptive
research which the population of consumers are all the consumer who bought
lipsticks in the location of research. The sample of consumer was 30 consumer
respondents. Consumer samples were taken by accidental sampling method. Data
for this study were obtained descriptively in tables and narrative.
The study found that 10 samples of local lipstick registered and
unregistered by BPOM and sold at Petisah Market Medan after being tested
turned out to contain cadmium in a range of 2,16 - 2,66 mg/kg. The content is still
satisfying the requirements according to the regulations of BPOM that is < 5
mg/kg. The level of consumer knowledge on lipstick at Petisah Market in Medan
consists of moderate knowledge (46,7%) and good knowledge (53,3%). While the
category of consumer attitudes toward lipstick at Pasar Petisah Medan consist of
good attitude (30,0%) and moderate attitude (70,0%).
It was concluded that all the sample of lipsticks contained cadmium but
still at safe limits. It is recommended that BPOM RI to provide more information
and education about lipstick contained cadmium to the public, it is hope that to
consumers will be more selective and pay attention to the security statement and
registration number when choosing lipstick to be used.
