TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION AND GENERAL CONDITIONS FOR

TRAFFIC SIGNAL POLES

Technical Specification

Reference:
1. Drawing No: 10.17.L for long Pole
2. Drawing No: 10.17.S for Stub Pole
3. British Standards BS 505:1971 and amendments

The pole shall have diameter and thickness (Minimum 114 mm outside diameter and
4.4 mm) as specified in the relevant drawing and strength and rigidity and tensile
strength of 375 MN/m2. It shall be so designed and constructed as to provide
adequate support and stability for the traffic signal heads.

The pole should be pre-drilled as per the related drawing for fixing traffic signal lights
and push buttons. An aperture of 50 mm width shall be provided to enable the cable
entry. The top and bottom of the aperture shall be radiused with radii equal to half of
the slot width. The inside surface of the drilled holes and aperture should be filed to
avoid any sharp edges.

A hot dip galvanized steel rod of 12 mm dia and 360 mm length shall be provided
along with the signal pole which is for inserting through the 18mm dia. drilled hole at
the bottom of the pole while casting the foundation.

Protective Treatment.

Poles and rods to be hot dipped galvanised in accordance with BS EN ISO

1461:1999 table D.1, but with a coating requirement of 610 g/sq.m.
All connecting bolts, nuts and washers, excluding components made from
stainless steel, shall be hot dip galvanized in accordance with BS EN ISO
1461:1999 table D.2

The anti-corrosion treatment is expected to be kept free from corrosion for a period of
ten years under condition of normal exposure to the open atmosphere of the region.

No drilling, cutting or welding of any of the components is allowed after galvanising

without the prior approval of the engineer. Treatment of areas of mechanical damage
or other surface defects shall only be permitted with prior approval of the engineer.

Identification Mark. The Manufacturer should mark their initials along with the
month and year of manufacture in the middle of the pole along Face AB or DA so that
they can be easily identified later on. This mark should be on the outer side of the
pole and should be clearly legible. However, the marking process should not damage
the component, galvanizing and the paint.

1
Specification for Painting. External surface of the pole need to be painted to Traffic
Grey finish (actual colour to be matched and approved). The painting should be
suitable for virgin hot dip galvanized surface and should be done in the conditions and
as per the practices, procedures and treatments specified/recommended by the paint
manufacturer/s. Approved systems of painting are as given below, out of which you
may choose any one.

System A
One coat of Hempel Paints Hempadur 15550.
Two coats of Hempel Paints Hempadur Hi Build 45200.

System B
One coat of Hempel Paints Hemucryl Ti Coat 18200.
Two coats of Hempel Paints Hemucryl Enamel 58100.

System C
First coat of primer suitable for hot dip galvanised surface – Berger paint’s
Luxaprime 1600 (Mordant Solution).
Two coats of Berger’s Luxathane 5000 Polyurethane Paint.

Any variation for the items quoted by you from the specification given above should
be clearly stated in the quotation and is subject to our approval.

Testing and approval

If you are successful in qualifying for the purchase order, you may have to
manufacture and submit a sample of the pole for testing by our laboratory for ensuring
the adherence to the specification within ten days from the date of such intimation.
Purchase order will be released only after such approval. Any delay in submission of
the sample within the specified time may automatically disqualify the supplier.

Testing of random samples of the poles need to be done during various stages of
manufacturing - (1) after fabrication, (2) after Hot dip galvanizing & (3) after
painting. As decided by this Ministry, the engineers will take up the tests at
Ministry’s testing laboratory or at the manufacturer’s factory. Necessary
arrangements for these tests will have to done by the supplier.
