Bilco’s patented “Soft Touch” Tong system provides maximum tong control, which is crucial in the prevention
of cross threading, galling, and shoulder damage. Other systems lack the control provided by the “Soft
Touch” system by relying too heavily on operator judgement, and applying final torque too quickly. Their
recording systems indicate damage only after it has occurred.
The Bilco “Soft Touch” system eliminates these problems by providing flexible variable speed control, a
patented tong disengagement feature which prevents thread damage, increased operator safety, and adaptability
to various recording systems.

Traditional power tong systems create misalignment during connection make-up and break-out. This produces
“Side Loading” at the threaded connection. “Side Loading” can result in thread galling and false torque
readings. False torque readings increase the probability of an under-torqued connection and therefore the
possibility of “Connection Failure.”

The “Neutrally Balanced Tong (“NBT”), Bilco’s newest tong, is designed to eliminate these connection
make-up problems.

This unique new tong design “Neutralizes” and “Balances” the negative effects of side loading on threaded
connections and in doing so, achieves “True Torque.”

The “NBT” is a “Mechanically Correct” tong design. More accurate torques, improved computer make-up
graphs, and reduced occurrences of thread galling are the direct results of “Neutralizing” and “Balancing”
tong side loading by the “NBT” system.

 Hydraulic Friction Grip TM

Bilco’s specialty tong die system, the “Friction Grip”, is the industry’s pioneer in providing a solution to the
costly problem of die marks on chrome and high alloy tubulars.

The Friction Grip is the Industry’s first power tong to use direct hydraulic die clamping on a rotating tong
head. The dies are attached and clamped before rotation of the tong head. The Friction Grip then surrounds
the pipe with an evenly distributed friction area. When this even distribution of pressure is coupled with an
increased contact area, maximum torque is easily achieved without damage or deformity to the pipe.

The Friction Grip’s soft, smooth (no teeth) dies are manufactured from aluminum which will not damage or
deform pipe.

Since penetration of the tube is on longer necessary, it is now possible to obtain multiple runs and repeated
use from chrome alloy tubulars.

The Friction Grip can accommodate the torques required for tubulars from 2-1/16" to 7-5/8". Modifications
are available upon request with advance notice.

 COUPLING BUCKING SERVICES

Bilco’s premium and CRA “ Coupling Bucking Services” can provide you with the confidence that installation
of your premium couplings has been afforded the same priority care as your field installation of the tubular
goods.
Bilco’s Bucking Unit offers “Friction Grip” and “Soft Touch” Torque Control Systems, for make-up of
CRA and premium couplings, when die penetration is unacceptable. “Bilco Analysis Make-Up” (B.A.M.)
computer monitoring of torque/turn, torque/time is also provided when needed.

The unit is light weight, compact, and easily transported to the pipe yard or location of your choice.

 Fiber GripTM
Patented

Bilco’s “Fiber Grip” tongs can be used on “Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic” (“FRP”) tubulars or API steel
tubulars that have been coated externally with FRP or other corrosion resistant materials.

A nylon belt gripping system that covers 95% of the tube body, allows the tong to grip the non-API outside
diameters without damaging the FRP or coatings. “Fiber Grip” can easily accommodate the very low
torques required for FRP tubing make-up as well as the high torques required for break-out.

A variety of “Fiber Grip” tongs are available for sizes 2-3/8" through 14" O.D.

An Integral Hydraulic Dumping System allows torque control within 5 - 10 ft.lbs. of the required optimum
torque without the use of a computer.

Bilco’s Dial-A-Torque
Hydraulic Casing and Tubing Tong Recorder
The Dial-A-Torque system receives hydraulic input from a Martin-Decker tong torque load cell sensor and
records pressure directly in foot pounds on a Martin-Decker single pin recorder. A permanent recording of
the make-up of each point of the drill string, tubing, or casing is the result.

The Dial-A-Torque has combined a simple but reliable torque-control, air-operated system with a
Martin-Decker chart recorder to make a very compact unit that can easily be handled by a trained Bilco
operator. By turning one setting the tong will automatically stop at the desired torque.

 Precision Slips and Elevators

“Precision Slips and Elevators” is Bilco’s latest

slip design for use where pipe damage by slips
or elevators is unacceptable.

By distributing the pipe load equally between

each of the die teeth, only a minimum amount of
die tooth penetration is needed to grip heavy pipe
strings. The pipe surface penetration by a single
die tooth is usually less than .005 inch.

The fundamental concept of “Precision Slips and

Elevators” is that each die tooth of each slip body
will contact the pipe with equal force every time.
This method will prevent pipe damage.

“Deepwater Precision Slips and Elevators” are designed for handling large diameter (3-1/2" to 7-5/8") CRA
production tubulars up to 250 tons, where die penetration is unacceptable. By distributing the pipe load
equally between each of the die teeth, only a minimum amount of die tooth penetration is needed to grip
heavy pipe strings, usually less than .005". This new system also features a “Control Line Friendly” spider
for running multiple flat packs and control lines up to 6" O.D. in a safe manner, on the rig floor.

 Dual Automatic Spider-Elevator

Bilco’s Dual Tools have provided reliable and time-efficient service since their introduction to the oil indus-
try in February 1978. They were designed for use with cementing or production equipment, and were engi-
neered to safely pull or run two strings of tubing or casing simultaneously.

Eliminates Bent Tubing. Heavy Duty Construction.

Bilco’s In-Line Elevator’s patented design carries the
load directly in-line under the bail; enabling one joint
of tubing to be pulled or run without fear of bending
the pipe from too heavy of a load positioned on one
side.
Easy and Quick Access to Open Hole.
A complete open hole can be obtained in less than
two minutes with the easy removal of one bolt that
holds the split-bowl Spider together. Easy access to
an open hole is very important when packers,
centralizers, hangers and other types of production
equipment must be lowered into it. Equipment up to
six inches in diameter can be lowered through the
Spider without necessitating the removal of the
Spider.
Bilco’s Dual Tools are constructed from the strongest
alloy steel available, and have been tested and rated
at 400 tons.
Designed for Easy Operation.
The control console for the Dual Tools may be placed
directly on the rig floor, allowing easy accessibility
to the operator.
Eliminates Accidental Droppage of String.
The Control Console houses two air regulators, one
controlling air pressure to the Spider and the other
controlling air pressure to the Elevator. By regulating
the air pressure, the slips cannot be accidentally upset
after one joint of 2 3/8" tubing has been picked up;
eliminating costly rig downtime.

Bilco’s patented design eliminates the need for the
external pipe divider and inner bushings used in the
older models; saving 45 minutes or more of costly
rig time; and eliminating the danger of leg injury
during the removal of the bushings.

Saves Valuable Rig Time.
A total of three to four hours of rigging up and rigging
down time can be saved per job, through the use of
Bilco’s Dual Automatic Spider-Elevator.
 Triple Tools
Patented

Bilco has taken the design of our Dual Tools one step
further and adapted them to applications requiring
the use of three strings. Bilco’s new Triple Handling
Tools are designed to handle two pipe strings up to
2-7/8" in diameter, and one pipe string up to 2-3/8"
in diameter, on 6-1/2" centers.
A special feature of this tool is the hydraulically
retracting slip bowls. In only 5 seconds, the slip
bowls can be retracted to allow tool diameters of up
to 8-1/2" to quickly pass through the spider.
The spider and elevator slips are air operated from a
console similar to that of Bilco’s Dual Tools.
Special sizes and adjustments can be made to meet
the special needs of our customers.

API and NFPA recommended specifications for
electrical installations for drilling rigs and production
platforms, Class 1 - Division 2.

 Connection Signature Tracer
U.S. and Foreign Patents

Bilco has created a system which can supply reliable
and accurate monitoring of both torque and
connection strain.
The Bilco CST provides measurement of rotational
rates and/or torque, followed by monitoring of axial
strain, torsional strain, and hoop strain measured by
a specially designed clamping device attached to one
of the tool parts. The clamping device is portable and
can be transferred from one tool to another in a matter
of seconds.
The results of the combination of computer and
clamping device sensors is a simultaneous plot of the
occurrence of torque and strain.
This strain data input makes it possible to more clearly
define the connection quality by indicating the contact
of seals and thread shoulders, damaged and out of
tolerance connections, and information
on lubricants seizing and misalignment during
assembly.

Strain trends are consistent with good connections
and can be considered a signature of that connection.
Having the combined data greatly improves the

connections being assembled.
Bilco was the 1st place winner at the 1991 OTC
for the best mechanical engineering achievement
award for our Connection Signature Tracer (CST).

Pressure Signature Tracer

Patented - Domestic & Foreign

“Pressure Signature Tracer” (Patented) is a system

engineered by Bilco to recognize primary seal failure,
and expands pipe testing, giving it new purpose.

When any connection is pressure tested with water Temporary

or gas, a leaking primary seal may not show a drop Pipe Dope Seal

in testing pressure due to a temporary seal created by

pipe dope. This condition would allow a leak to be
missed with standard testing methods. When this
occurs, a pressure wave is experienced between the
leaking primary seal and the temporary pipe dope seal.
This creates abnormal stress in the connection box. Leaking

It is this stress that the “P.S.T.” tool measures and
plots out on the computer along with the pressure
curve.

“P.S.T.” is the only definitive test to verify the

integrity of the primary seal.

 Hydrostatic & Inert Gas Pressure Testing
(Ni & He)

Bilco’s Hydrostatic and Inert Gas Pressure Testing services will internally pressure test your production
tubing and accessories for a leak-free completion.

Bilco’s lightweight, compact, self-contained unit features a 20,000 PSI working pressure rating with 46,000
PSI burst-rated hoses for maximum safety at any working pressure. The integrated console allows a
single-technician operation of the system. Test bars are rubber and plastic coated to provide a non-marking
system for CRA or internally coated tubulars.

Testing can be accomplished with H2O above or below the rotary. Nitrogen/Helium testing is provided with
gas sniffer equipment to quickly detect a leaking connection above the rotary.
Test pressures can be documented by a pressure recorder or by computer monitoring with “B.A.M.” computers
to provide a pressure vs time graph for each connection.

 Assembly Make-up Service

Bilco’s Assembly Make-up and Testing Facility offers

the customer the opportunity to handle, make-up, and
test their downhole production equipment with the
expertise and care that is required.

All materials are received and inspected by Bilco’s

Assembly Make-up Supervisor. Make-up and testing
criteria such as torques, inside and outside diameters,
recommended testing pressures, etc..., are verified.
The connections are cleaned, inspected, doped and
drifted according to manufacturer’s and customer’s
specifications.

After the materials are assembled, they are internally

pressure tested to the desired PSI with H2O or gas,
according to the customer’s recommendations.

The assemblies are then drifted one final time, thread

protectors are installed, then the assemblies are ready
for shipping.

Forty-foot offshore cargo baskets are available for

safe transport of the assemblies.

Pneumatic Thread Cleaner

The Bilco Pneumatic Internal Thread Cleaning

System is a self-contained portable unit which comes
equipped with two internal thread cleaning rotors,
hose, and an assortment of brushes. Bilco employs
the use of nylon pin and box brushes to assure
damage-free cleaning of the threads. The Bilco system
goes one step beyond traditional thread cleaning
methods by capturing the excess and used cleaning
fluid, thus keeping pollutants out of the surrounding
environment.

The biodegradable cleaning fluid flows from a 55

gallon pressure-rated tank under low air pressure
(approximately 30 PSI) onto the rotating brush heads.
The Pneumatic Internal Thread Cleaning System
requires the use of 90 PSI and 30 CFM of air to
operate efficiently.

 “Tough Boy”TM Casing Scraper
Patented

The Bilco “Tough Boy” Casing Scraper is designed

to provide 100% scraping coverage when cleaning
the inner walls of well casings and liners. The “Tough
Boy” can remove film, cement cakes, mud cakes,
shot burrs, or any type of scaly material.

Bilco provides the industry with a NEW concept of

wall cleaning. The “Tough Boy” features heavy duty
construction and easy on-site assembly and
maintenance. The new 45 degree blade angle provides
100% scraping coverage and excellent results when
run behind a bit or mill. Bilco’s design facilitates
rotation, as well as reciprocation, and has maintained
exceptional results doing both.

Bilco’s Casing Scraper has been in service since

1981. Our customers continue to be impressed by
the “Tough Boy”’s reliability, versatility, minimum
upkeep, and the excellent results provided time after
time.

Bilco has designed a tubing scraper for sizes 2-3/8"

up to 3-1/2" for special applications.

 Bilco’s “Tough Boy” Scraper/Brush

NOW the Bilco “Tough Boy” scraper can be fitted

with brushes to complete the cleaning process. This
can be handled on the rig site if need be. If the first
set of brushes wears out while on location is possible
to put in a fresh set of brushes without sending in
the entire scraper/brush frame.

The Bilco “Tough Boy” scraper and the Bilco brush

can be run simultaneously. It is still possible to both
reciprocate and rotate with this arrangement. Plenty
of room for bypassing cuttings is still available with
both the scraper and the brush.

 “Deepwater Dual Tools”
Patented

5-1/2" X 5-1/2" Deepwater Duals

“Deepwater Dual Tools” are designed for handling large diameter (3-1/2" - 5-1/2") dual production tubulars
up to 400 tons.

Designed on 8-1/2" centers instead of the standard 6" dual tool centers, the “Deepwater Dual Spider” also
features hydraulically retracting slip bowls. When the spider is in the open position, the dual tubing is
hydraulically split, allowing the necessary room to accommodate the larger (4-1/2" - 5-1/2") power tongs.
Connection makeup is accomplished on the rig floor. The spider’s split position also facilitates the running
of large diameter control line clamps.

The dual system is completed with Bilco’s patented “In-Line” Elevator, which is also designed on a
8-1/2" center.

2-3/8 to 5-1/2 inch tubing. Sliding table separates slips for easy connection makeup and
