STEP Standard 3 - Assessment and Data Literacy

Pre-Assessment - Copy and paste the pre-assessment you plan to use to assess the students’
knowledge of the topic prior to implementing the unit lessons. Include the scoring criteria used
to determine whether the student Exceeds, Meets, Approaches, or Falls Far Below the learning
goal and measurable objectives.

Scoring Criteria
Falls Below:
Students answer 5 or less of the questions correctly.

Approaches:
Students answer 6 of the questions correctly.

Meets:
Students answer 7 of the questions correctly.

Exceeds:
Student gets everything correct on the front and back of the
page. They answer 8 of the questions correctly.
Pre-Assessment Data: Whole Class - Once you have assessed your students’ knowledge on the topic,
collect and analyze the pre-assessment data to determine if you will need to modify the standards,
learning goal, or measurable objectives that will be addressed during instruction.

Number of Students

Highly Proficient (90%-100%) 15

Proficient
(80%-89%) 2

Partially Proficient
(70%-79%) 1

Minimally Proficient
(69% and below) 4

Pre-Assessment Analysis: Whole Class

I feel that based on the data above, I do not need to make any changes on my selection of national and
state content standards. I feel that each of the standards I choose were easily measurable and I will keep it
that way. I made it very simple having 4 questions to measure each standard. I also feel that the learning
goal and academic content standards meet this assessment well as well and I will not be making any
changes there either.
I feel that this data could have a lot to do with how I plan on planning, delivering, and
assessing this unit. I feel that it is clear the majority of students know exactly what they are
doing. This means that I may be able to go into much more detail with m my students on these
topics when I create these plans. They already seem to have a lot of background information on
animals and their habitats and animals and their traits. This means that we will not have to spend
as much time working on the basics of why certain animals live where they do. These children
obviously know that a fish lives in the water and that a polar bear lives in the arctic.
There are many children though that still do not seem to have any idea where certain
animals live and the traits that they need to survive. We have actually been talking about animals
and their traits for our standards for the past 2 weeks, so I thought that all of the students would
have done well on this already. This means that I will need to target these students that do not
seem to understand and work more closely with them moving on. When delivering this lesson, I
will make sure that these students are really getting it before we move onto something else. I
may also pull these students during our reading groups time to work on animals and identifying
their traits. They may just benefit from this extra time.
Assessment I feel went really well. I had these students put up offices, which is basically
a wall of folders between students and their peers so that nobody can cheat off one another. I will
do this again to make sure that I am getting a fair feel for what the class actually knows. At this
point, I am planning on using the same assessment for their post assessment. There were still 4
kids that were in the falls below range and I really want to be able to get this higher. I might
possibly change my mind and mix it up with some different animals and some different traits,
but we will see. I want these students to have the best possible chance for success here.
Post-Assessment – Copy and paste the post-assessment you plan to use to assess the students’ knowledge
of the topic after implementing the unit lessons. The post-assessment can be the same as the pre-
assessment, a modified version, or something comparable that measures the same concepts. Include the
scoring criteria used to determine whether the student Exceeds, Meets, Approaches, or Falls Far Below the
learning goal and measurable objectives.
