2. SpectraFlow Analytics Ltd

SpectraFlow Analytics is a Limited Company based and incorporated in Neuenhof in the
Cantone of Aargau in Switzerland. SpectraFlow Analytics took over the complete SpectraFlow
online analyzer business from ABB in 2013, as well as all employees. Therefore all knowledge
was transferred into the new company, which is now serving the market with more flexibility
and optimized costs. SpectraFlow Analytics Ltd has strong ties to Universities in and outside
of Switzerland to continuously expand the usage of the SpectraFlow Analyzer into other
industries than cement and iron ore.
SpectraFlow has a very strong and long established supplier network and is only using high
quality products from Switzerland, Germany, Japan and Canada. The FTIR Spectrometer
produced by ABB Bomem in Quebec (Canada) is the best available on the market, with the
highest resolution and precision.
SpectraFlow Analytics has a very strong sales network around the globe with very well
established partner companies to serve the customers in Brazil (Sao Paulo), Iran (Teheran),
India (Delhi), Japan (Tokyo), Korea (Seoul), Islamabad (Pakistan), Saudi Arabia (Riyadh) and

Turkey (Istanbul) and Canada (London, Ontario). Europe is directly served by the Swiss head
office.

3. Customer Demands
• Cement producers have to mix the raw materials in certain ratios. The relevant oxides
are CaO, SiO2, Al2O3 and Fe2O3 for the production of Portland Cement Clinker. To
achieve the optimal mixture it is necessary to know the chemical composition of the
raw materials. This should be achievable without any sampling out of the material
stream. Online Measurement is the solution.
• Online analyzers conventionally available are based on neutron shifts in the core and
identifying the chemical composition on the emitted gamma radiation. To shift the
neutrons in the core, high energy is needed and is emitted from highly toxic radioactive
sources. To operate radioactive sources complicated licence procedures are necessary
for customers or are completely forbidden to import into certain countries. Therefore
the demand is high for safe online analyzers, without any need of licences or permits.
SpectraFlow is the solution.

4. Technology
• 2007 ABB decided to develop an own online analyzer. Instead of using radioactive
sources to achieve neutron shifts in the core, Near-Infrared was chosen as the
preferred technology. This eliminates the need of any licences, permits or government
approval to import, operate or maintain the system in any country of the world. These
advantages mean also a very short delivery time. Normally the system is ready to use
after 4 months of ordering.
• Until 2010 an analyzer with an ABB Fourier Transformation Infra-Red Spectrometer
was developed. The test installations were finished in 2010. In 2011 the airslide
application was launched bringing all advantages of the SpectraFlow Analyzer to the
airslides of cement plants.
• The analyzer is currently used in the cement and iron ore industry, however the same
analyzer can also be used for other mineral industries. The hardware setup is always
the same, while the calibration is different. Industries the analyzer is tested in the
laboratory and can be used are: Coal and Bauxite, as well as Gypsum. Potentially the
analyzer can also be used for the following industries as first laboratory tests show
good results: Fertilizer (Pot Ash, Urea, Phosphate), Copper, Nickel, Niobium, Gold.
• Due to the not deteriorating light source, no recalibration of the system is necessary.
Beside this the light sources are easily available and very cheap. This allows the
customer to operate the analyzer without any dependency of the supplier at a very
low costs. Normal running costs are below € 1000.
• Comparison of different analytical methods

5. SpectraFlow Product Line
The SpectraFlow product portfolio consist of the Crossbelt Analyzer, which is used to control
the stacking of Raw Material piles in the Cement, Iron Ore, Coal, Bauxite, Special Minerals
and Phosphate Industry and the Airslide Analyzer, which is exclusively used for Raw Materials
in the Cement Industry, mainly Raw Meal and Cement. Both analyzers have the same high-
quality Spectrometer and are free of any radio-active or other toxic components.

6. SpectraFlow in the Cement Industry (15 Crossbelt/18 Airslide Analyzers)

SpectraFlow is used to control very efficiently the stacking of the stockpile or the control of
the additive feeders at the raw mill. Both applications bring huge advantages for the
customer and optimizes the variation of the kiln feed considerably. The very accurate analysis
results of the crossbelt analyzer are used to coordinate the feeding of the crusher to optimize
the stacking of the stockpile, while the airslide analyzer together with a powerful control
software automatically controls the feeders of the additives reducing the standard deviation
of the Raw Meal considerably without the usage of the XRF laboratory.

7. SpectraFlow in the Iron Ore/Steel Industry (8 Crossbelt Analyzers)
SpectraFlow is used for Iron Ore mines to classify the raw material according the quality
either in the mine at the crushers or before the loading on the train or ships to transport the
product to the customer. In the sinter plant the SpectraFlow Analyzer is used to measure the
raw material coming from the blending bed and is afterwards adjusted with corrective
materials. After the mixing drum SpectraFlow is measuring the moisture content to optimize
the water addition of the sinter. To produce high quality sinter the moisture and carbon
content, as well as the basicity are very important process parameter which are controlled
by SpectraFlow very efficient. No other online measurement system can handle Iron Ore
materials.

8. SpectraFlow in the Coal Industry
The Near-Infra Red technology is used since 30 years to measure organic materials online
(e.g. gasoline, food, pharmaceutical,….) as organic molecules have a very good signature in
the NIR spectra and are therefore easier to measure than inorganic minerals with strong
crystal structures. As in coal beside the inorganic ash also the organic carbon and moisture
content is of major interest, NIR is the obvious method for the coal application and was
intensively tested in the laboratory. Currently PGNAAs are used in the mine, but due to the
low measurement accuracy there is no online method so far successful for the gasifier control
in the power plant. SpectraFlow is the only online analyzer available on the market to
measure the chemical composition of the gasifier feed.

9. SpectraFlow in the Bauxite Industry (1 Crossbelt Analyzer)

SpectraFlow is the only online analyzer solution which can distinguish between different
mineral phases. Therefore SpectraFlow can quantify the Gibbsite or Kaolinite content of
Bauxite ore, which is a very important information to limit the undesired reactive Silica of the
Kaolinite in the product. This works excellent and was tested in the laboratory. Additionally
NIR is already used for measuring Bauxite ore in the laboratory. No other online
measurement system can handle Bauxite ore.

10. SpectraFlow in the Gold industry (1 Airslide Analyzer)
Gold roasting is a process, applicable to refractory ores and concentrates that contain
sulphide sulphur, organic carbon, and potentially arsenic. Removal of these compounds is
necessary to achieve high gold recovery (>90%) during cyanide leaching.
The temperature during the roasting process is sustained by the introduction of oxygen and
the heat value of the ore, so the carbon and sulphur content. To keep the process in the
roaster stable, these concentrations need to be known. SpectraFlow can directly analyse and
distinguish between CO3 and TCM as well as between S2- and S(total). Inorganic components
like arsenic can be analysed as well. The expected analytical error is in a range of +/- 2.5%
(relative).

11. Phosphate/Copper/Nickel and other mineral industries
As SpectraFlow can measure very accurate mineral phases and molecules the analyzer
potentially can be used in most minerals industry to optimize the production. Laboratory
feasibility studies for the following raw materials show promising results: Gold, Phosphate,
Potash, Copper, Nickel and Niobium

12. Benefits for customers

• Extension of the quarry/mine
• Costs for corrective material can be reduced
• Better product quality
• Lower rejects
• No recalibration of the analyzer
• All maintenance can be done by customer
• No licenses or permits to import, operate and maintain the analyzer
• Very low running costs
