As the landscape and demo-
graphic of our small neighborhoods
in Ballston Spa, Milton, and Malta
change, so must our acceptance
and appreciation of differences,
Schmehl said. “The United States
is a land of diversity. Learning
about other cultures helps our kids
understand why their friends may
celebrate different holidays, speak
a different language, eat different
foods or dress a different way,”
Schmehl said. She also suggested
starting the conversation about
charity with your kids early, so that
it will become an important part of
their futures.
The current needs of the children
in Haiti and Zimbabwe include
clean water, food, medical care
and education. Proceeds from this
event will be used to provide these
services and supplies. Tickets for
KidsGiving are $12 per child and
can be purchased at TreePaad or by
calling (518) 859-4424.
Colleen Pierre is a mother of
two and has a Web site called
MaltaMama.com, where she blogs
Monday through Friday about area
events and activities. MaltaMama.
com was started in January 2010
as a way for Colleen to connect
with other families living and
working in Malta and surrounding
areas. The site averages over 4,000
visitors per month and is steadily
growing.

MILTON—At its Wed., Oct. 27
workshop, the town board reexam-
ined the prospective $6.6 million
budget for 2011. The meeting’s
focus was to find enough funds to
bar an intended tax increase.
Comptroller Martin Glastetter
had said the tentative budget would
cause an owner of a village home
assessed at $200,000 to pay $39.10
per $1,000 in assessed value in
town taxes. Outside the village, an
owner would have paid $55.72.
At Milton’s first 2011 budget
workshop, councilman Joseph J.
Miranda, Jr., had resisted the tax
increase. While questioning the
proposed 3 percent jump, Miranda
had asked if there were a way to
remove the tax increase from the
budget. Glastetter had assured the
board that the rise was a small
amount.
Miranda had then quipped, “I
suggest we cut two board members.
We’ll flip.”
Fortunately, no board member
needed to step down.
Town Supervisor Frank Thomp-
son explained where the money
was found: “The town building
fund was reduced from $200,000
to $170,000 to abate any tax rate
increase,” he said. “The Town
Center project has been temporar-
ily postponed.”
Thompson said he considered the
budget adjustments appropriate for
today’s economy.

Town Justice over Democratic

Fantauzzi, 41, who obtained
2,119 votes, according to the Sara-
toga County Board of Elections,
will begin serving his four-year
term in January.

of a contentious election between
the two candidates, which began
when they vied for the Republican
endorsement in August, and a

Program, a project that is pro-
viding students the opportunity

tion. Breen, 50, who received
1,164 votes, has been an attorney
for 22 years.
Fantauzzi, who grew up in
the Town of Ballston, served as
Ballston Town Justice for one year,
after the retirement of the previous
justice in 2006, he said. He is a
graduate of the Law School at
William and Mary, and lives with
his wife and four kids in Ballston.
In the 43rd Senate District
Republican Sen. Roy McDonald
was re-elected to his second term
as senator. He was elected in
2008, after serving as an assem-
blyman for six years in the 112th
to participate in experimental
research very similar to what
scientists around the world are
working on. Thanks to Global-
Foundries’ support for the In-
novation in Education program,
students like Garso are able to
expand their minds in ways they
never thought possible.
“I don’t think I would have
thought about things like ‘zero
gravity’ in such depth if it wasn’t

for this project,” said Garso.
Over 1,000 students in grades
5 through 12 are participating
in the process of developing a
proposal for the competition.
Part of the process, especially
in the high school classes, is to
have groups of students work
together to create a proposal that
will be one of three selected and
submitted to the National Cen-
ter for Earth and Space Science
counties including Ballston, Charl-
ton, Milton, the City of Saratoga
Springs, Greenfield and Galway.
“I’m honored to receive such
strong support from the residents
of Schenectady and Saratoga
Counties to continue to serve as
their Assemblyman,” Tedisco
said in a statement on his Web
site. “I’m proud of the upbeat and
positive campaign I’ve run talking
about the pocketbook issues that
matter most to families.”
Keramati, who offered his
congratulations to Tedisco, said
in a statement, “I care deeply
about the challenges that face us
in New York State and in our dear

Milton Rules Against a Higher Fence BSBPA Promoting Holiday

The Zoning Board debates inches and feet in applicant’s requests.

MILTON—At its Oct. 28 meet-
ing, the Zoning Board of Appeals
held a public hearing for John
Todorovic, owner of the residence
at 6 Wiebicke Ct. Todorovic called
this address “a secluded cul-de-
sac” of about eight homes, some
in the process of being built. He
proposed to erect an eight-foot
privacy fence across one side of his
property. Since Milton town code
permits fences of only six feet or
lower, a variance would be needed.
To validate his appeal, Todorovic
explained he may build an above-
ground pool on his property in fu-
ture. Having the taller fence would
deter small children from looking
into his yard, and keep them safer.
“Todorovic said, “I believe the
fence would cause no adverse
effects or detriment to the neigh-
borhood. I have spoken with
my neighbors, and they are fine

received a letter from the owner
of 2 Wiebicke Ct., who objected to
the granting of the variance. Acting
chairman Kenneth Burhmaster
summarized the letter, which stated
this neighbor considered six feet
high enough. Todorovic said he
was unaware of that.
The board ascertained that the
land was flat where the proposed
fence would be erected. Todorovic
responded to queries about alterna-
tives such as plantings. He replied
that he had found a fence to be
much less expensive.
Todorovic said he would consider
enclosing his entire yard in time,
but for now, he wanted to set the
fence only along one side.
During the public hearing, David
Beals, of 40 Chapman St. spoke.
He said Todorovic’s request
opened the floodgates, so that
everyone might want eight-foot
fences.
Beals told the board, “If everyone
does that, you’ll soon have just
what your zoning ordinance didn’t
want.”
Todorovic said his request was a
single application, and that he did
not feel it set a precedent. Town
Comptroller Martin Glastetter
countered that the appeal would
indeed set a precedence if similar
situations arose.
Ultimately, the board voted o deny
the petition. He asked about the
process for appealing the decision,
and Glastetter said Todorovic could
examine the town code and refile.
Todorovic said he would look for
an example of an eight-foot fence
in town to help his case.
The board also heard two requests
for variances at the meeting.
The first came from a resident of
434 Sodeman Rd. He wished to
build a 13-foot carport on the site
of a former house on his property.
Wayne Howe, building and fire
inspector, reported he saw no
problem with this application. He

James Fulmer, of 3558 Galway Rd.
This owner wanted to subdivide
his six-acre property into a four-

setback would place a house on the
two-acre parcel in a low, wet area,
facing White Road. The grade
drops three feet there, he reported.
He asked for a variance of 70
feet. “Other houses on White Road
vary from the 150-foot setback,”
Fulmer said. “Some with frontage
issues are as close to the road as 35
feet.”
Howe noted this subdivision
request would have to go before
the Milton Planning Board.
A public hearing was also sched-
uled for Fulmer.

5 to contact them with a descrip-
tion, date and time of the event
to be included in the holiday
brochure, which will be avail-
able throughout the community.
Ellen Mottola, executive

BSBPA said the idea of the
program brochure is that it will
bring more families to the area
throughout the weekend.
“There are going to be a lot
of people in town and why not
let everybody else know about
what’s happening,” she said.
Mottola said that including
descriptions of events in the
program brochure is not only
open to BSBPA members, but
other community members can
notify the BSBPA and they will
include their submissions.
“As long as it’s open to the
public, we’ll be hapy to list it in
there.”

a diversified business to hedge
against downturns in particular
sectors and a broad client base
to insulate against the downside

the first two Saturdays in
November, Friends of the
Kayaderosseras members and
community volunteers will meet
in Kelley Park, Ballston Spa, to
begin cleaning up portions of the
Kayaderosseras Creek’s banks.
According to project leader John
Battenfield, this is the “ideal
time” to spot debris along the
creek, when most of the leaves
have fallen and the groundcover
has died back.
In previous cleanup days,
workers have gathered discarded
items such as old water heaters,
plastic containers of all types,
and hundreds of tires. Evidence
shows that even a few of the
anglers who fish for the stream’s
trout leave behind beverage
bottles and cans, fishing line
and styrofoam bait boxes. The
Friends organization has been
working not only to clean up the
mess, but also to get the word
out that this is not the way to
treat our valuable resources.
The Friends are coordinating
with local municipalities to pick
up the bags of trash accumulated
during the work sessions. “The
Town of Milton and the Village of
Ballston Spa have been very coop-
erative”, according to Battenfield.
Adults and supervised older
children are invited to take part
on Saturday, Nov. 6 and 13, with
Nov. 20 as a rain date. Volunteers
will be asked to sign a liability
waiver and to wear sturdy boots,
weather-appropriate clothing
and work gloves. All work will
be done on land; no one is ex-
pected to enter the water.
After gathering in Kelley Park
at 9:00 a.m., volunteers will be
organized into teams, provided
with heavy-duty trash bags and
sent out to pick up debris in
nearby areas. Team leaders will
have cell phones. At 12:30 p.m.

Kelley Park for a free cookout

New map highlights state touring routes
ALBANY - Traveling New York
State’s scenic roads just got easier;
thanks to a new map that brings
them all together for the first time.
The Adirondack North Country
Association and the New York
State Department of Transportation
have teamed up to produce the
map, which gives visitors a chance
to see all 21 designated Scenic
Byways spanning more than 2,000
miles of roads in one convenient,
folded map. One side highlights the
14 routes in Northern New York,
the other side shows all the Byways
statewide.
NYSDOT Acting Commissioner
Stanley Gee said, “This first state-
wide scenic byways map, which
identifies each byway route and
provides useful information and
tourism contacts, will be a valu-
able tool for the traveling public.
Byways offer an alternative travel
route to our major highways and
daily travel patterns, while telling
a story about New York State’s
heritage, recreational activities and
natural beauty.”
When vacations are getting
trimmed from families’ budgets,
hitting the road on a “staycation”
is more popular than ever. The 93
million people who live within
a day’s drive of the Adirondack
region can find their way to com-
munities that serve as a gateway
to the area’s majestic mountains,
countless waterways, and other
natural wonders. The project was
funded by a grant to the NYS
Scenic Byways Program, at the
New York State Department of
Transportation, through the Federal
Highway Administration and the
Transportation Equity Act for the
21st Century.
In ANCA’s service region, the
new state maps will be available
at five key locations: 1000 Islands
Tourism in Alexandria Bay, War-
ren Country Tourism office in
Lake George, Regional Office
of Sustainable Tourism in Lake
Placid, Hamilton County Tourism
office in Lake Pleasant, and the
Oneida County Convention and
Visitors Bureau in Utica. Statewide,
300,000 copies will be distributed.

National Merit Scholars
The Ballston Spa High School
recently announced the Na-
tional Merit Scholar commen-
dations for two students in this
year’s senior class. Principal
Kris Jensen recognized Race
Archibold and Ian Sager for
their qualification as National
Merit Scholar winners in the
2011 program. As commended
students, they placed among the
top five percent of more than 1.5
million students who entered
the 2011 competition by taking
the 2009 PSATs. Archibold also
has qualified as a semifinalist in
the 2011 National Achievement
Scholarship program as one
of 1,600 Black American high
school seniors to place amongst
the top five percent. He will
continue on to compete as a
finalist and hopes for additional
scholarships to be awarded to
him next spring.
Sager has been involved in the
FIRST Robotics program at the
high school and is also involved
in Tae Kwon Do, completing the
requirements to earn his Second
Degree Black belt. An honor

Evening Symposium on Adolescence
Over 450 parents, students,
educators and interested com-
munity members recently
participated in a symposium on
adolescence entitled “Adoles-
cence: Knowing Our Children
and Empowering Them to
Make Good Decisions.” The
program featured a panel of
knowledgeable professionals
from a variety of human ser-
vices and community agencies
who engaged in a discussion
regarding children and how we
can help them to be happier,
healthier and more successful
during adolescence.
Middle School Principal
Michael Selkis hosted the
evening that was coordinated
by the support services team in
the middle school as part of this
year’s building goals to address
student success and achieve-
ment.
The symposium was the first
step in engaging the community
to develop a dialogue to sup-
port youth in the Ballston Spa
schools. Some of the topics that
were addressed include bully-
ing and peer pressure, the social
structure of the teenage years,
understanding how the adoles-
cent brain and emotions work,
self-identity issues, substance
abuse, media/Web influences,
communication, responsibili-
ties and privacy issues. The next
step will be to further develop
supports for the students in our
schools, communicate with
parents and design opportuni-
ties to involve parents in the
educational day.

Where can I get some help with
my Medicare questions? I’m ap-
proaching 65 – Medicare enroll-
ment age – and am confused with
all the different options that are
available today. What can you tell
me?
Confused Retiree
Dear Confused,
It used to be that enrolling in
Medicare was quick and sim-
ple. Not any more! Changes
over the past few years in the
way Medicare is offered has
made signing up a lot more
complicated. Here’s what you
should know.
Many Choices
The options and choices
available to Medicare ben-
eficiaries today can be dizzy-
ing. In addition to Original
Medicare (Part A and B)
that’s been around for 45
years, beneficiaries now have
the option of enrolling in a
prescription drug plan (Part
D), and a supplemental (Me-
digap) policy – both of which
are sold by private insurance
companies. Or, a Medicare
Advantage plan which covers
health care, prescription drugs
and extra services all in one.
These plans, which are also
sold by private insurers, are
generally available through
HMOs and PPOs.
To help you figure out
which Medicare plan(s) best
meet your needs, there are
a wide variety of services
available depending on how
much help you need. Some
services are completely free;
some charge a fee; and some
are free to consumers but get
commissions from insurance
companies. Here’s where you
can find help.
Free Services
A good starting point to get
familiar with Medicare is the
“Medicare & You 2011” book-
let that overviews the program
and your options. You should
receive a free copy in the mail
sometime in October, or you
can pick one up at your local
Social Security office or read
it online at medicare.gov.
Medicare also offers a va-
riety of free online tools that
can help you find and compare
health plans, supplemental
policies and prescription drug
plans (see www.medicare.gov/
find-a-plan). Or, if you don’t
have Internet access, or don’t
feel confident in working
through the information on
your own, you can also call
Medicare at 800-633-4227
and they will do the work for
you over the phone.
Some other great resources
that can help are the Medicare
Rights Center (medicarerights.
org), which staffs a hotline at
800-333-4114 to help answer
your Medicare questions. And,
your State Health Insurance
Assistance Program (SHIP)
which provides free one-on-
one Medicare counseling in
person or over the phone. To
find a local SHIP counselor
visit shiptalk.org, or call 800-
677-1116.
Fee-Based Services
If the free services don’t
cut the mustard and you need
some additional help in mak-
ing your Medicare decisions,
there are a handful of fee-based
companies that are very help-
ful. One of the best is Allsup
Inc. (medicare.allsup.com;
888-271-1173), which charges
$250 for its Medicare Advisor
service. For that fee, Allsup
will assign you an adviser who
collects your personal infor-
mation over the phone such
as the prescription drugs you
take and the doctors you use,
and provide you customized
advice on the best Medicare
health plans that match your
needs. They’ll even help you
enroll in the plan(s) you select.
Other service companies
worth a look are Healthcare
Navigation (healthcarenaviga-
tion.com; 877-811-8211), and
American Medical Claims
(amcstl.com; 888-569-2131).
Commission-Based
Another way to get help with
your Medicare enrollment is to
consult an independent insur-
ance agent. Agents typically
get paid a commission to sell

Squeezes Win over Ballston Spa

Ballston Spa ̶ There are
some teams in sports where it
does not matter who the players
are or who they are facing; they
simply find a way to win. The
Shenendehowa Plainsmen once
again proved that they are one of
those teams when they overcame
an 11-point deficit to defeat the
Ballston Spa Scotties 24-14.
The score does not reflect the
game well. It was extremely
close and competitive for the
majority of the contest. In fact,
for those in the crowd and on
the sideline, it felt as if Ballston
Spa controlled the game.
Ballston Spa created this feel-
ing by responding to a 20-yd
FG by Shenendehowa on its
opening drive with a 53-yard
touchdown run by Scotties run-
ning back Jordan Davis. Davis
found a little running room on
a sweep to the right sideline for
what appeared to merely be a
positive gain. That was before
Davis cut all the way back
across the left side of the field,
outrunning everyone en route to
a Scotties touchdown.
The Scotties capitalized on
the momentum of their 7-3 lead
when Matt Beighey attempted
a pooch kick which Ballston
Spa recovered. Ballston Spa
attempted pooch kicks on three
separate occasions. The Scotties
were willing to use any method
they could to keep Shenende-
howa’s powerful running game

Social Media Tools vs. Social Media Strategy
Many people confuse the tools
they are using for social media
messaging as a strategy. Posting
regular comments on your blog, or
Facebook page is a great start, but
remember that the effectiveness of
social media isn’t the tools that you
use, but how you use them to listen,
answer questions and connect with
your audience and followers.
Think of social media tools/chan-
nels as opportunities to connect
your brand with your customers
and contacts. When you post a
question, or a thought provoking
comment you will solicit feedback
and conversation. Within the
conversation there will usually be
some commentary that can influ-
ence another’s decision to do busi-
ness with you.
Look Before You Leap
Before you can start messaging
you must developing a social media
strategy. A strategy involves align-
ing your social media plan with
your business goals, whether they
are financial in the way of increased
revenue, or measurable in terms of
the number of Facebook fans you
have, or followers of your blog.
Decide on what you want to get out
of social media, and design a plan
to get you there.
Think You Are Ready?
Many companies I work with
today are enthusiastic about
diving into social media, it is
all the rage, and seems like a
low-cost tactic to more business.
The problem is most companies
don’t have a realistic idea about
what it takes to launch and sup-
port a social media program.
It takes a lot more than creating an
account and setting up a profile with
the best of intentions to participate.
Here are five things to consider
before you choose to add social
media to your marketing mix:
Prospect Preferences. Do you
know where your prospects hang
out online? Do they engage in
social media? If so, is their involve-
ment based on personal or profes-
sional reasons.
Content. How much do you have
to pull from? Are you already en-
gaging in email marketing, or have
you developed a whitepaper? Use
your current sales and marketing
tools to repurpose content for use in
your Social media messaging.
Resources. How many people do
you have to dedicate to your social
media effort? Make sure you have
someone assigned to keep a consis-
tent flow of messaging to keep the
momentum going. Also be sure that
whoever does your messaging has
a clear understanding of what your
policy is on social media.
Long-Term Commitment. Social
media requires a slow and steady
flow of content to be successful.
It will take a minimum of three
months to start to get a sense of
direction, and as long as six months
to a year to find the right track.
Connect the Dots. Social media
should be integrated into your exist-
ing marketing strategy. Make sure
to include links in your email blasts
that make it easy for someone to
connect with you. Also add to your
email signature. Adding reminders
to your other communications will
drive home the fact that you want to
connect and share socially.
Choosing the Right Channels
Armed with content and a clear
plan, think about the use of each
social media channel or tool, their
purpose, and how you can use each
to vary your message and content
to optimize your reach. Pick the
tools to fit your goals. Think about
the purpose and strategy of the fol-
lowing channels:

priority 1-5, 1 being the greatest.
Keeping your business and finan-
cial goals in mind, concentrate on
the 1′s and 2′s! Put the most effort
into the channels that appeal to
your target audience, but don’t
forget using a few more to drive
your strategy.
Measure Twice, Cut Once
No we are not talking about home
improvement, but the concept of
planning before forging ahead does
apply to social media. Engaging
in conversations, monitoring feed-
back, and varying your message
will all lead to more powerful
posts, and gaining recognition as
someone to follow.
Monitoring your social media
efforts is a very important step in
the process. Rather than manually
checking all of your social media
tools, look at a Listening and Mea-
surement Tool such as HootSuite to
manage your strategy. Tools such
as HootSuite allow you to track
what messages resonate with your
audience, and show traffic to your
peripheral channels such as your
website, or blog. Set up Google
Alerts to track what is being said
outside of your social media chan-
nels about your own brand, and
your competitors.
Reap the Rewards
If planned and implemented
properly, your social media strat-
egy will contribute significantly to
your marketing goals. There is no
stronger message than a customer
telling someone to buy from you.
People listen to their peers, it is not
a sales pitch but a trusted recom-
mendation.
