Personal Statement

I grew up being the youngest of three children with a single parent. My siblings and I

naturally had to be independent and self reliant at a very young age. One of my youngest

memories as a child is very interesting. I would meet up with my friends and have these meetings

on the playground which had no meaning whatsoever. Nonetheless, I believe that this memory is

Qmeaningful to mention because this shows the level of maturity I had as a child. This also

shows that I have self motivation and drive. This all boils down to the identity that I see for

myself and strive to achieve.

Although some might think that being the youngest sibling meant you’re babied more,

this was certainly not the case for me. Growing up being the only man in the house was a very

important and life changing responsibility to have. At times, I wanted to slack off and be a kid

but I wasn’t able to. This taught me a valuable lesson of appreciation and to value what I have.

Due to the circumstances, I inevitably grew a strong bond with my two older sisters. We would

stick up to each other and learned from each other.

Years later, still keeping in mind these lessons, I entered high school. High school was an

awakening experience because it showed me that there’s more than subject lessons that can be

taught in school. In high school you can also learn values and responsibilities. I then joined the

volleyball team after my first semester in school. This lead to having friends who were juniors,

who would then turn into senior friends the following year. This was great because my friends
were giving me tips and what not to do in my upperclassmen years. Some tips included joining

extra curricular clubs, like Key Club, which includes community service. This gave me an

advantage on the students in my grade because I got involved in the community early.

Community service rapidly became a vital part of who I am.

Now, as a senior, I have applied these leadership skills to everything I do. I have joined

many extracurricular clubs and sports, which helped me become the involved student I strived

and worked hard to be. Since then, I have continued being an active member of the clubs I joined

throughout my years in high school. This lead to me being awarded leadership positions in some

of them. For example, from freshman year to senior year, I went from being an active member of

key Club, to the Treasurer and from a ninth grade benchwarmer to the first captain of the boys

volleyball team my junior year. This experience birthed the hunger for involvement that makes

me who I am.

Ultimately, I have used my experiences as learning opportunities and applied them to my

everyday life. This shows how important it is to be involved and to get yourself out there. It is

amazing how once I was a little kid having meaningless meetings at recess to now being an

involved and successful high school student.
