MIDTERM EXAM – LINES, FIELDS AND WAVES

Advanced Program - Time: 90 Minutes - Date: August. 01, 2017

NOTES: This is a closed book exam. Students are allowed to use only: Calculator, Smith Charts
provided and o single sheet of notes (written on both sides).

Question 1 (4 points):
A lossless transmission line is used to
connect the load and generator as shown
in the below figure where 𝑉𝑆 =
10 cos(4𝜋109 𝑡) (𝑉).

a. Calculate reflection coefficient and input impedance at the input of the T.L? (0.5 points)
b. Determine number of maximum voltage and minimum voltage locations on the T.L? Identify
these locations. (1 points)
c. Calculate the voltage and current at the input and the end of the T.L? (1 points)
d. Calculate the incident, reflected power and transmitted power at the input of the T.L (unit: dBm)
(1 points)
e. Calculate the incident, reflected power and transmitted power at the load (unit: dBm) (0.5 points)
Question 2 (4 points):
A 50Ω lossless transmission line of length 𝑙 = 2.2𝜆 connects a
generator with 𝑉𝑠 = 10 𝑉 and 𝑍𝑠 = 50Ω to a load 𝑍𝐿 = 60 −
𝑗50 Ω. Using the Smith Chart to determine:
a. Reflection coefficient at the input of the T.L? (0.5
point).
b. Standing Wave Ratio on the T.L? (0.5 point).
c. Actual admittance at the input of the T.L? (0.5 point).
d. Design the matching network using inductor (L) and capacitor (C) to achieve the maximum
power transmission to the load? (1.0 point).
e. Design the single stub matching network to achieve the maximum power transmission to the
load? (0.5 point).
f. Compute the power delivered to the load? (1.0 point).
Question 3 (2 points):
For conjugate matching of output of a microwave
amplifier, it is important to connect the load of
effective impedance 20-j20 through a reactive
circuit such that the impedance looking in the circuit
appear to be the complex conjugate of the generator
output impedance 𝑍𝑔 = 40 + 𝑗30 Ω.

a. Calculate the series reactance 𝑗𝑋𝑠𝑒 and shunt susceptance 𝑗𝑋𝑠ℎ which may be used. Calculate
the values of the elements given that the frequency is 3.5GHz. (1.0 point).
b. Re-design the matching circuit using single stub matching technique. (1.0 point).

Good luck.
