Solid Waste Management

 Solid Waste Management

o The process of collecting and treating solid wastes.
o It offers solution for recycling items that do not belong to the trash.
o Tons of solid wastes are disposed at various landfills. These landfills pollutes the
surrounding air which may harm everything surrounding it.
 Major Contributors of Solid Wastes in the Philippines
o Residential homes – includes kitchen wastes, plastic, paper and bulky household
items.
o Industrial – known to be one of the biggest contributors of wastes. It produces
wastes in the form of food waste, packaging waste, and medical waste.
o Commercial – hotels, markets, restaurants, and office buildings where it produces
solid wastes.
o Institutional centers – schools, colleges, universities and prison produces wastes
like rubber, plastic, papers and food.
 According to the World Bank, global annual waste will increase from 2.01 billion tons in
2016 to 20.5 billion tons in 2050. Plastic is a key waste management problem having a
12% part in the solid wastes.
 Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 or Republic Act 9003
o Provisions for solid waste reduction and avoidance through recycling, composting
and other methods before disposal in the appropriate facilities.
 Solid Waste
o Considered as one of the main problems of our country these days.
o In rural areas, a person produces an average of .3 to .5 kg of waste.
o In urban areas, people living in modernized lifestyle produce .7 kg of waste per
day.
o In modernized city such as Quezon City, the disposal of tons of garbage is an
issue since there is a lack of space for the disposal of such waste.
 Solid Waste Management in UST
o UST looks like a mini Philippines.
o According to Mrs. Maria Rosario C. Garcia, UST has a failing grade.
o There are rules regarding plastics but not on the container itself. Removing of
sando bag but not really the container.
 Main Reason of Poor Solid Waste Management
o We are unpatriotic. People would say “I am nationalistic” but when it comes to
real love of the country, there is not much.
o There is R.A. 9003, which requires people segregate their wastes starting from
their home yet they don’t do it.
o If we don’t manage our waste, it doesn’t look good. There are mounds of garbage.
o It is not good for health because it emits gasses which are poisonous for us.
o Once it goes to open bodies of water, food contamination happens.
 Importance and the Science Behind It
o Single use plastics – harm species in the ocean. It is not truly biodegradable.
o Plastics are oxodegradable. It uses the oxygen in the air to break down the
chemical bonds of the plastic.
 Where Do Solid Waste Go and How is it Processed
o Linear flow – we have creation and then this is temporary storage. One is transfer
and one would be dumpsite. This one is not sustainable.
 Where Are Solid Wastes of Metro Manila Disposed
o There are specific areas. Smokey mountain although already closed, Tanza
Navotas, North, Payatas and Rodriguez Rizal.
o Mother Earth Foundation – organization whose task is training people to practice
zero waste.
o Zero waste – it doesn’t really mean that there is no waste. It states that as much as
possible, all resources of trash must be utilized.
o Space is not the issue, it is the laziness.
 GCS
o Garbage Collection Section
o There are four divisions, one of these is the solid waste management division.
o Under solid waste management division, there are three sections: (1) garbage
collection section, (2) special cleaning section, and (3) disposal section.
o It is more on planning for the beautification of Quezon City.
o Quezon City, based on the waste analysis and characterization studies, it is
required by the R.A. 9003. All LGUs must study the waste of the city.
o Each person in Q.C. produces about more than 1 kilogram if garbage per day.
 Projects of Quezon City Regarding Proper Solid Waste Management
o Batang Ecosavers Club – all public schools have children who bring recyclables
which are non-biodegradable but recyclables. At the end of the school year, a
student may be qualified to receive school supplies.
o Hiwahiwalay na Basura sa Barangay – in barangays, there are three times a week
collection. There are three sources: (1) major garbage, (2) SMS (single multiple
source), (3) barangays.
o MWF collection and TTHS collection.
 Biggest producer of solid waste is fast food chains.
 Quezon City is looking forward for Waste To Energy (WTE)
 We should stop littering, we must love the Philippines.
 Let us keep it clean to help us during the natural calamities.
 The societal and environmental issues about solid waste management lie beneath our
own responsibilities as Filipinos.
 Begin with small steps by learning to properly segregate your wastes.
