Pixels- basic unit of programmable color on a computer display or in a computer image

Image resolution- detail an image holds

Megabyte- a unit of measurement used to describe the size of a digital file

Megapixel- one million pixels

Gigabyte- unit of data storage capacity that is roughly equivalent to 1 billion bytes

JPEG- Joint Photographic Experts Group

Raw- unprocessed photograph

Tiff- Tagged Image File Format, a computer file format for storing raster graphics images

PNG- Portable Network Graphics is a file format for image compression

White balance- process of removing unrealistic color casts, so that objects which appear white in

person are rendered white in your photo

Histogram- graphical representation of the tonal values of your image

Aperture- unit of measurement that defines the size of the opening in the lens that can be

adjusted to control the amount of light reaching the film or digital sensor (F Stop)

Shutter speed- the length of time a camera shutter is open

Depth of field- distance between the nearest and the furthest objects that are in acceptably sharp

focus

Aperture priority- is a setting on some cameras that allows the user to set a specific aperture

value (f-number) while the camera selects a shutter speed to match it. (Av)
Shutter priority- setting on some cameras that allows the user to choose a specific shutter speed

while the camera adjusts the aperture to ensure correct exposure. (S or Tv)

Bitmap- images are stored as a series of tiny dots called pixels

Exposure- unit of measurement for the total amount of light permitted to reach the electronic

sensor during the process of taking a photograph

Watermarking- a kind of marker covertly embedded in a noise-tolerant signal such as an audio,

video or image data. Shows ownership

Optical zoom- when you change the focal length of a camera by adjusting the physical zoom lens

Digital zoom- method of decreasing the apparent angle of view of a digital photographic or video

image

Bracketing- the general technique of taking several shots of the same subject using different

camera settings

Light meter- a device used to measure the amount of light

Image stabilization- family of techniques that reduce blurring associated with the motion of a

camera or other imaging device during exposure

Noise- random variation of brightness or color information in images

Lag time- delay between triggering the shutter and when the photograph is actually recorded

Hot shoe- mounting point on the top of a camera to attach a flash unit and other compatible

accessories

Fisheye- ultra wide-angle lens that produces strong visual distortion (panoramic shots)
Marco- photographing objects that are very close to the lens, the film or the sensor

Telephoto- a specific type of a long-focus lens in which the physical length of the lens is shorter

than the focal length

Wide angle- a lens whose focal length is substantially smaller than the focal length of a normal

lens for a given film plane

DSLR- A digital still image camera that uses a single lens reflex (SLR) mechanism (Digital

Single Lens Reflex)

Dynamic range- a measure of the range of light intensities from the shadows to the highlights

Digital negative- imaging specification that provides for long-term storage of digital photographs

generated in multiple proprietary formats

Exposure compensation- alter exposure from the value selected by the camera, making

photographs brighter or darker
