Indian Standard
METHODS OF
CHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF BAUXITE
PART 1 DETERMINATION OF LOSS ON IGNITION

( First Revision)

0. FOREWORD
0.1 This Indian Standard ( Part 1 ) ( First Revision ) was adopted by
the Indian Standards Institution on 24 December 1985, after the draft
finalized by the Methods of Chemical Analysis of Ores, Minerals and
Refractories Sectional Committee had been approved by the Structural
and Metals Division Council.
0.2 IS : 2000-1962” which covered determination of loss on ignition;
total silica, non-reactive and reactive silica; alumina; ferric oxide by
dichromate method, permanganate and calorimetric methods; titania by
reduction ( volumetric ) and calorimetric methods; phosphorus; calcium
oxide; magnesium oxide and manganous oxide was first published in
1962. While reviewing this standard the Sectional Committee felt the
need for the revision of this standard. On the basis of experience gained
during these years, the Committee decided to revise this standard into
different parts covering determination of each element in separate part,
which on publication would supersede that element given in IS : 2000-
1962*. This part covers determination on loss of ignition. The other
parts are:
Part 2 Determination of silica ( as SiOa, 0.5 to 10.0 percent )
Part 3 Determination of alumina
Part 4 Determination of ferric oxide
Part 5 Determination of titania ( 0.5 to 12.0 percent )
Part 6 Determination of vanadium ( V < 0.1 percent )
Part 7 Determination of phosphorus pentoxide ( PzO, < 0.5
percent )
Part 8 Determination of manganous oxide ( MnO < 0.5 percent)
The procedures for determination of CaO and MgO in bauxite are
at present under investigation and will be given in subsequent part.

0.3 In preparation of this revision due consideration has been given to

the facilities available in the country to carry out such analysis.
0.4 In reporting the results of a test or analysis made in accordance
with this standard, if the final value, observed or calculated, is to be
rounded off, it shall be done in accordance with IS : 2-1960*.

1. SCOPE
1.1 This standard ( Part 1 ) prescribes method for determination of loss
on ignition in bauxite.

2. SAMPLING

2.1 Laboratory Sample - Use a truly representative and homogenous

sample drawn in accordance with IS : 1999-1962f. Grind sufficient
quantity of this sample as required for analysis in an agate mortar.
2.2 Test Sample - Grind 5 to 10 g of the laboratory sample, as given
in 2.2.1 to pass 150 pm IS sieve [ see IS : 460 ( Part 1 )-1985$ 1. Dry to
constant mass at 110 f 2°C and use it for the purpose of chemical
analysis.
2.2.1 Prepare at least 5 times as much sample as is needed, and make
sure that all the powder is included; it is not admissible to take only the
powder that passes through the sieve the first time. Mix well by rolling
on a sheet of glazed paper, rubber or oil-cloth.
2.2.2 Lift a corner of the sheet and draw across, low down, in such a
way that the material is made to roll over and over and does not merely
slide along. Roll the sample back and forth. along each diagonal for
100 times or more. Spread out the sample into squares and take a little
from each square. Finally mix the sample chosen.
NOTE - Care should be taken as not to grind the sample too much in one time.
Too frequent sifting through silk bolting cloth should be avoided in order to prevent
contamination of the sample by abrasion and also loss of moisture due to the heat of
grinding.

3. QUALITY OF REAGENTS

3.1 Unless specified otherwise, analytical grade reagents and distilled

water shall be employed in the test.

*Rules for rounding off numerical values ( revised ).

4. DETERMINATION OF LOSS ON IGNITION

4.1 Reagent
4.1.1 Magnesium Perchlorate ( Anhydrous ) - salid.

4.2 Procedure -- \Veigh accurately ._1.00 g-of sample ( s_ce2.2 j into a

previously weigher1 p!atinum crucible. bleat slo\~iy first, then at a
gradually increasing temperature. Finally ignite at 1 000°C for one hour.
Cool in a desiccator containing preferably magnesium perchlorate and
weigh. Repeat the heating till constant weight.

4.3 Calculation

Loss on ignition = A--B

c x 100

where

A =- initial mass in g of the crucible with sample,

B = final mass in g of crucible with residue after ignition, and
C = mass in g of the sample taken.
