This integration note describes the level of support available for Microsoft® Windows Server® 2008
Foundation on HP ProLiant servers. The purpose of this paper is to assist customers during installation
of the Windows Server 2008 Foundation operating system (OS). For more information, visit the HP
website: www.hp.com/go/ws2008.
Topics in this paper include:
• Supported configurations of ProLiant servers
• Recommended system configuration and server platforms
• Procedures for new installations
• Known issues with workarounds
Windows Server 2008 Foundation is an x64 edition OS for systems with either of the following
processors:
• Intel Xeon® Processors with Intel Extended Memory 64 Technology (EM64T)
• Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD64) Opteron TM Series Processors

Feature Description
Supported users Windows Server 2008 Foundation supports a maximum of 15 user accounts. Each user
account permits one user, using any device, to access and use the server software.
x64 Sockets Servers that support x64 connections can install and run Windows Server 2008
Foundation.
x86 Sockets Windows Server 2008 Foundation is a 64-bit system and does not support 32-bit socket
connections.
Table 2. Windows Server 2008 Foundation configuration details
Feature Description
Failover Cluster You cannot deploy Windows Server 2008 Foundation as a failover cluster node. A
Nodes failover cluster node is a server that is a member of a failover cluster and can own and run
clustered services and applications.
Server Message Block Windows Server 2008 includes Server Message Block (SMB) 2.0 to provide users and
connections devices with shared, simultaneous access to network resources. Windows Server 2008
Foundation supports a maximum of 30 simultaneous inbound connections. This means that
the total combined number of user accounts and devices that can connect to the server at
any given time cannot exceed 30. Connection attempts that exceed the allowable 30
receive a message informing them that the server cannot accept any additional
connections at that time.
Although Windows Server 2008 Foundation supports up to 30 simultaneous connections,
the End User License Agreement (EULA) for Windows Server 2008 Foundation supports a
maximum of 15 user accounts.
Network access Windows Server 2008 Foundation supports a maximum of 50 RRAS connections.
connections (RRAS) The Routing and Remote Access service (RRAS) in Windows Server 2008 supports remote
user or site-to-site connectivity by using virtual private networking (VPN) or dial-up
connections.
Network access Windows Server 2008 Foundation supports a maximum of 10 NPS connections.
connections (NPS) Network Policy Server (NPS) is the Microsoft implementation of a Remote Authentication
Dial-In User Service (RADIUS) server and proxy in Windows Server 2008. NPS is the
replacement for Internet Authentication Service (IAS) in Windows Server 2003. NPS
performs centralized connection authentication, authorization, and accounting for many
types of network access, including wireless and virtual private network (VPN) connections.
Terminal Services Windows Server 2008 Foundation supports a maximum of 50 TS Gateway connections.
Gateway connections A Terminal Services Gateway (TS Gateway) connection enables authorized remote users
to connect to terminal servers and to remote desktops on the corporate network from any
Internet-connected device that is running Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) 6.0.
NOTE: To access a hosted application, such as Microsoft Office, acquire a Windows
Server 2008 Terminal Services client access license (TS CAL) for each user account (not to
exceed 15 user accounts) that uses TS Gateway to connect to the server.
Language packs The end user license agreement (EULA) for Windows Server 2008 Foundation does not
permit you to download language packs from the Microsoft Web site to install on
Windows Server 2008 Foundation. Installing a language pack on Windows Server 2008
Foundation causes the branding images to be rendered incorrectly and may result in other
unknown problems. If you installed a language pack on Windows Server 2008
Foundation, uninstall it.
Supported configurations
Windows Server 2008 Foundation should load and run on any HP server listed in “Recommended
ProLiant server platforms” section of this document when the server meets the recommended hardware
configuration established by Microsoft.
Carefully review this document for the recommended system configuration and possible issues that
might be encountered. Do not use this paper as the sole source of information. In addition to the
websites mentioned throughout this paper, visit the Windows Server 2008 Foundation support page:
www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/default.mspx.
IMPORTANT
Windows Server 2008 Foundation uses DVD media and requires
a server configured with either a USB DVD-ROM or an IDE DVD-
ROM for local installations. For customers without IDE DVD-
capable servers, copy the Windows Server 2008 Foundation
media to a network share.
Current iLO firmware contains support for virtual DVD media;
however, the installation is much slower than local installations.
IMPORTANT
Windows Server 2008 Foundation supports only a single
processor socket.
Component Requirement
ProLiant DL servers:
ProLiant ML servers:
IMPORTANT
iLO 2 firmware must be updated to Version 1.42 (or later) before
Windows Server 2008 Foundation is installed.

Pre-installation tasks
To prepare for installation, ensure that the following conditions are met:
The server selected for installation is listed as a recommended ProLiant server platform in
Table 4.
Go to www.hp.com/go/bizsupport to obtain the supported ROM for Windows Server 2008
Foundation installations for the server.
Use the ROM-Based Setup Utility (RBSU) to set date/time and configure the boot controller order
(if necessary).
Use the Option ROM Configuration for Arrays (ORCA) utility, F8 during post, to configure the
RAID settings for the server.
Update iLO 2 firmware to Version 1.42 (or later).
NOTE
The PSP installs automatically at the end of the assisted path
installation. It does not need to be initiated to perform a manual
installation of Windows Server 2008 Foundation.
PSP updates are available on the HP website at www.hp.com/go/ws2008, or the FTP site at
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib2/software1/supportpack-windows/p844001358/v51718.
NOTE
When installing the PSP on a system running Server Core, keep in mind the
following exceptions to the PSP installation:
• You cannot specify the location for extracting the PSP files. The files
are extracted to the same location as the PSP self-extracting
executable.
• You must run the executables rather than double-clicking the .exe files.
NOTE
Make sure that PSP files are in the same directory as the
setup.exe program.
5. As the PSP deployment starts, it performs an inventory of the available updates and checks the
local system to see what hardware and software is installed.
6. After the inventory and discovery processes finish, the Select Installation Hosts screen appears.
You can select either the local host or one (or more) remote hosts for PSP deployment.
7. After selecting the host(s), the Select bundle filter screen displays information about the PSP bundle
to be installed. Select the bundle and the appropriate filter options. For remote deployments,
additional screens allow users to update information on a per-host basis.
8. After selecting the bundle for all hosts being updated, open the Select Items to be Installed screen
to complete the following tasks:
– Select the components to be installed.
– Configure the components, if necessary.
– Review failed dependencies before installation.
– Review the revision history of the components.
9. After selecting the components to install, click Install to proceed with the installation. Once the
installation completes, the Installation Results screen appears. If the PSP installs successfully, the
process is complete.
10. If one (or more) component(s) did not install successfully, complete the following steps:
– Exit HP Smart Update Manager.
– Make corrections to your environment.
– Restart the application to install the components that had problems.
NOTE
A license key may be required to use iLO virtual media with HP
ProLiant ML or HP ProLiant DL servers.
2. Place the Windows Server 2008 Foundation media into the DVD drive and boot the server to the
DVD to begin the installation.
3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
IMPORTANT
The F6 option for updating drivers is not available during the
Windows Server 2008 Foundation installation. If a boot
controller driver is not found, add the driver during the
installation by clicking the Update Driver button, and then
selecting the driver from the USB media, diskette drive, or CD-
ROM drive.
