COURSE GOALS:
To provide the student with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary to
prepare engineering drawings according to ANSI standards.
To provide students with graphical tools and techniques to visualize in three dimensions.
Allow students to be analytical and creative thinker to solve engineering problems.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
CAD:
The thrust of this course is on the principles, tools, and techniques of advanced drawing that are
used in both manual and CAD situations, with emphasis on CAD drafting techniques. Since all
students have had CAD courses, the computer software will not be a part of instruction. Students
may complete all exercises using a CAD software package such as: AutoCAD, Inventor,
Solidworks, Pro-E, etc.
Lab Time:
You will attain the stated course objectives and master the required body of modeling and
drafting knowledge through completing CAD and hands-on activities during scheduled
laboratory periods.

Modeling and Drafting assignments are done on an individual student basis. The majority of
student work will be done in the Industrial Technology Center Computer Labs. Each student is
expected to put in a minimum of two, two-hour sessions per week at the CAD workstation in
addition to the class time.

Laboratory Assignments
Laboratory assignments are evaluated using the following criteria as appropriate for the specific
assignment:
1. Directions followed correctly and all parts of the assignment completed.
2. Construction--views constructed correctly and placed in proper orthographic
arrangement.
3. Composition on the screen or page -- sufficient spacing between views, drawing centered,
lettering sufficient size, title information complete.
4. Accuracy--lines meet exactly where expected, proper size and position of parts and of the
entire object.
5. Line types--proper line types used for object, hidden features, center lines, cutting planes,
etc.
6. Dimensioning--placement, spacing, from proper views, appropriate text size, precision,
notes & leaders in conformance to industry standards.
Project:
Student are expected to form groups of three to complete an engineering design project using 3D

CAD technique. This is aimed at bringing together all the components of the course. Some
example projects are shown in Chapter 13 of the text book. However, you will be developing
your own by taking a standard object and reverse engineering it. Disassemble the object and then
sketch the part after measuring all the dimensions using an accurate measuring tool such as
micrometer or vernier calipers. Get the approval of the project idea by the instructor before April
13. If you submit a project that is not approved and/or from any published project, then you will
lose 30% of the points.
For this purpose you may take any component that you will be using in your daily life. Create a
geometric model of each non-standard part in the assembly. Create dimensioned detail drawings
of each non-standard part in the assembly. Create an orthographic and exploded pictorial
assembly drawing in section. Create an ANSI standard parts list with all relevant information for
the parts in the assembly. Throughout follow the ANSI standard practices. Submit the completed
project by April 29.
Observed Performance
At the end of the term the instructor will assign each student a grade based on observed
performance. It includes such factors as facility of working with the CAD, problem solving
ability, initiative, attitude, attendance, and punctuality.
Attendance
Attendance is required in all scheduled lecture and laboratory meetings.
Exam
Comprehensive mid-term and final examinations will be given. Examinations are a part of the
overall learning experience, and will contribute to the mastery of the body of knowledge you
gain from the course. Content of examinations will be taken from assigned text readings.
