The journal presents claims of what circumstances can occur to prisoners when they are serving
time in prison. It is specifically talking about the type of treatment prisoners receive when they
are trying to bring attention to the court of harsh treatment being received while serving time in
prison. These harsh treatments that it is implying can be such as being physically abuse by other
prisoners or by the guards; also it talks about physiological trauma they experience when they
are being sent to solitary confinement. It presents results when prisoners file for better conditions
when they feel their first amendment has been violated and the treatment that they receive from
the guards and prisoners when they are aware of the prisoner actions.

The journal was written in 2013 and was published by the University of Yale. It was written by
Marissa Doran who attended the University of Yale and received her doctrines from the school
of law. The journal is very helpful because it presents claims of what actions can be occurring to
prisoners as they are serving time and what can happen to them when they try to take a stand to
make their lives in prison less bearable. Also talks about how prisoners turn to the law for help
when they feel that their civil rights have been violated.

The reason that I want to include this article in my essay is to talk about the irony that is
occurring in it. The prisoners in jail broke the law which is why they are there in the first place
and then they are turning to the law to help them in prison.

The journal talks about how several of juveniles are being tried as adults in prisons and are not
allowed the possibility of parole. In the journal it mentions how before towards the end of 20th
century many youths were being sentenced to prison as adults because they were committing
crimes that were then done only by adults which are eighteen years of age or older. However
there were a large sum amount that were committing such crimes as murder or raping before
reaching eighteen years of age. Since many were going to prison and serving long or life
sentences the amount of juveniles’ committing these crimes began to decrease. However, many
states now wish to not practice this law as they see it as being harsh for someone at such a young
age.

The journal was published in 2015 and was written by Christina Lyons. She is a journalist in
Washington D.C. and writes about government and politics. She is a former editor of Bloomberg
BNA’s International Trade Daily. She was a co-author of “Politics in America” and received her
master’s degree in political science from American University. The article is helpful because it
gives information in a way of how people first begin their life in crime which in some cases it
begins when they are juveniles. It is also helpful because it talks about this strict approach to
ending crime at such a young and how productive it has been but nonetheless certain states want
to try a different approach.

The reason I want to include this article in my essay is because it talks about crime occurring at
such a young age and how some juveniles committing these crimes are more than likely to
commit crime again. Also how we should keep this strict approach otherwise it can backfire on
the community.

Lyons, C. L. (2016, February 5). Restorative justice. CQ Researcher, 26, 121-144. Retrieved from
http://library.cqpress.com/

Throughout the article the author is talking about restorative justice. Restoratve justice is the
focus on prisoner rehabilitation through reconciliation with victims. The author is stating how
more prisons should implement this practice because it can help prisoners onto a different path
when they are released. It also just not just talks about prisoners over the age of eighteen but also
juveniles who are younger. The purpose of it is to help prisoners get to a better place both
mentally and spiritually so that they will not find themselves serving time in prison again.

The article is very helpful
because it not only gives the perspective of just one side but also evaluates the perspective of the
other side which is to not give prisoners any support at all. The reason being is because there is
no proof that it can help them improve their lives and also it is very limited to the amount of
people that they can offer it because it depends on why they were sentenced to prison in the first
place.
The reason that I want to include this article is because it gives both the perspectives of applying
restorative justice. Also because it mentions how this practice can only be used on certain
offenders based on the crime that they have committed.

Glazer, S. (2014, January 10). Sentencing reform. CQ Researcher, 24, 25-48. Retrieved from

Throughout the article the author is talking about how when marijuana first began to make an
impact in the late 90s or early 2000s there was a mass incarceration rate for people who were
selling the drug at the time. Many of them were people that have never committed a serious
crime as pointing a gun or murdering. The article talks about that it is unfair for them to be
serving such a harsh sentencing. It is stating that people who were arrested for this reason should
be allowed to be set free since the crime was a non violent offense. Also it states that other
inmates who were charged with this offense should also be set free as it can help with the
overpopulation of prisons.

The article can be relevant because it was written in 2014 by writer Sarah Glazer. Sarah’s work
talks about social policy, health, and education in the U.S. Several articles of her work have
appeared on the Washington Post and also on the New York Times. She received her bachelor’s
in American History from the University of Chicago. The article is helpful because it is stating a
time when there was a vast amount of incarceration happening due to the amount of people
selling and distributing marijuana. Also it is useful because it is stating that these people did not
commit crimes that are very serious and believe that they should be let go.

The reason that I want to include this article is due to the fact that many of these people were
caught selling drugs and although it was not a serious crime we do not know whether it could
have possibly lead to a more serious life in crime. Also we do not know that these people who
sold these drugs had been selling for a long period of time and just happen to be caught this time.

the Prisoners' Rights Movement." The Journal of American History 102.1 (2015): 73-86.
Web.

The article is revaluating the history of the prison system beginning in the 1900s when prison
systems began to be challenged due to the lack of treatment and also the horrible conditions that
prisoners had to serve their sentence. It also goes on to talk about how most prisoners were being
treated as slaves by the state after the Second World War. Another interesting fact was the
amount of riots that were occurring because of unfair treatment and the mass incarceration rate
as well.
Robert Chase is a assistant professor of history at Stony Brook University in New York. The site
that he posted his article was on history processhistory.org and it is a site where teachers,
historians and sometimes also students post their research on a topic that has occurred in the
world. I would like to use this article because although it was written in 2015, it is talking about
a different time period than where we are today. The data could be out to date and it is possible
that it cannot be true in the society that we live today.

The reason that I want to use this article is because it is talking about the mass riots that were
occurring and the tough living conditions that prisoners had to endure. Although it may be true, it
can also be false for the time period where we are in today.
