one.)

2. Review

“I will show you pictures of a circle

with a given dimension. You will
solve mentally for the
circumference. If you already have
an answer, just raise your right hand
and say ‘I love Math’.”

“Are you ready?” “Yes sir.”

(The teacher will show the pictures

one-by-one.)

Picture 1:

“I love Math. The answer is 6.28 m.”

1 cm
Picture 2: “I love Math. The answer is 12.56 cm.”

Picture 3: “I love Math. The answer is 9.42 dm.”

Picture 4: “I love Math. The answer is 15.7 m.”

“Very good class!”

3. Motivation

“Now, we are going to sing a song

entitled ‘Circle Song’.”

(Show the lyrics of the song.)

“Everybody read the lyrics of the (Pupils will read the lyrics of the song.)
song.”
“Circle Song”

A circle, it goes round and round, round and

round, round and round
Like the moon and the sun
A circle always round.

A circle, it goes round and round, round and

round, round and round
Like a wheel and a clock
A circle always round.

A circle, it goes round and round, round and

round, round and round
Like a ball and a coin
A circle always round.

A circle, it goes round and round, round and

round, round and round
Like the Earth, and a ring
A circle always round.

“Now listen carefully. I will sing

the song first.”

(The teacher will sing the song.) (Pupils will listen carefully to the teacher.)

Like the Earth, and a ring
A circle always round.

“Now, everybody stand. Let us sing

the song together.” (Pupils will stand and sing the song with the
teacher.)

“Very good!”

(The teacher will teach the Miss

Universe clap to the pupils.)

“Give yourselves a Miss Universe

clap!” (Pupils will do the Miss Universe clap.)

“You may now take your seat.” (Pupils will take their seat.)

B. Developmental Activities

1. Presentation

(The teacher will show a problem (The chosen pupil will read the problem.)
and let one pupil to read it.)

Problem:
Every time it rains, Mrs. Lopez
saves water in a big clay jar called
‘tapayan’. She covers them with a
circular galvanized iron with a
radius of 5 dm. What is the area of
the circular cover?

“What is asked in the problem?” “The problem is asking for the area of the
circular cover.”

“What is given in the problem?” “The given in the problem is radius of 5 dm.”

2. Discussion

“In order to solve the area, you

should follow the formula in
finding the area of a circle.”

“The formula is:

A= π x r2, where A means area,
the value of pi (π) is approximately
3.14, and r means radius.”

“r2 means (r x r). You will multiply

the radius by itself.”

“Everybody read again the formula

in finding the area of a circle.” “A=π x r2.”

“Very good!”

“Now, we are ready to solve the

area of the circular cover of Mrs.
Lopez’s tapayan.”

(Show the picture of a circular

cover with its radius.)

5 dm

“Everybody look at the picture.

This picture shows the circular
cover of Mrs. Lopez’s tapayan. To
solve for its area, let us write first
the formula. What is the formula
again?” “The formula is A=π x r2.”

“Very good!” (Write the formula on

the board.)
A=π x r2

“Now, let us substitute the values to

the formula. What is the value of
pi?” “The value of pi is 3.14.”

“Very good!” (Substitute the value

of pi on the board.)
A=3.14 x r2

“What is the value of the radius of

the circular cover?” “The value of the radius of the circular cover is
5 dm.”

“Very good!” (Substitute the value

of the radius on the board.)
A=3.14 x (5 dm)2

“Now, let us expand (5 dm)2. So it

will be:” (Write it on the board.)
A=3.14 x (5 dm x 5 dm)

“Let us multiply first the numbers

inside the parenthesis. 5 dm x 5
dm?” “The answer is 25 dm2.”

“Very good!” (Write it on the

board.)
A=3.14 x 25 dm2
“Now, let’s multiply 3.14 by 25
dm2.” (Multiply it on the board.)

“The final answer is 78.50 dm2.”

“In writing the final answer in area,

we always put the exponent 2 after
the unit of measure. Exponent 2 is
read as square.”

“Can you follow?” “Yes sir.”

“Let’s have another example.”

(Show the picture of a circle having

a diameter of 12 m.)

12 m

“In the example, what is given?” “The given is diameter equals 12 m.”

“Very good! Let us write first the

formula. What is the formula?” “The formula is A=π x r2.”

“Very good!” (Write the formula on

the board.)
A=π x r2

“In the formula, what we need are

the pi and the radius but now the
given is diameter. What do you
think we are going to do to find the
radius?” “We must divide the diameter by 2 to get the
radius.”

“Very good! So, 12 m divided by 2

is?” (Write it on the board.)
12 m ÷ 2=

“Very good! (Write the answer on “The answer is 6 m.”

the board.)
12 m ÷ 2 = 6 m

“We already have the radius. Let us

now substitute the values to the
formula. What is the value of pi?” “The value of pi is 3.14.”

“Very good!” (Substitute the value

of pi on the board.)
A=3.14 x r2

“What is the value of the radius?” “The value of the radius is 6 m.”

“Very good!” (Substitute the value

of the radius on the board.)
A=3.14 x (6 m)2

“Now, let us expand (6 m)2. So it

will be:” (Write it on the board.)
A=3.14 x (6 m x 6 m)

“Let us multiply first the numbers

inside the parenthesis. 6 m x 6 m?” “The answer is 36 m2.”

“Very good!” (Write it on the

board.)
A=3.14 x 36 m2

“Now, let’s multiply 3.14 by 36

m2.” (Multiply it on the board.)

“The area of the circle is 113.04

m2.”

3. Fixing Skills

Find the area of the following

circles:

1. 1. A=π x r2
7m = 3.14 x (7 m)2
= 3.14 x (7 m x 7 m)
= 3.14 x 49 m2
= 153.86 m2
2. 2. A=π x r2
16 cm = 3.14 x (8 dm)2
= 3.14 x (8 dm x 8 dm)
= 3.14 x 64 dm2
= 200.96 dm2
3. 3. A=π x r2
= 3.14 x (8 m)2
= 3.14 x (8 m x 8 m)
= 3.14 x 64 m2
= 200.96 m2
4. 4. A=π x r2
12 dm = 3.14 x (6 dm)2
= 3.14 x (6 dm x 6 dm)
= 3.14 x 36 dm2
= 113.04 dm2

5. Practice

“Now, we are going to have a group

activity. Before we start, I will
discuss first the rules in doing the
activity.”

(The teacher will show the rules (Pupils will read each rule and listen to the
and let the pupils read it one-by- teacher.)
one. He will explain each rule every
after the pupils read each rule.)

“Are the rules clear to you?” “Yes sir.”

(The teacher will divide the class (Pupils will count of by 4. After counting by 4,
into 4 groups by letting the pupils they will go to the place of their group set by
counting of by 4. After counting by the teacher.)
4, the teacher will set a place for
each group inside the room.)

“Now, for each group, select your

group leader.” (Each group will select their group leader.)

“Does all group already have a

leader?” “Yes sir.”

“All eyes in front. I have here four

gifts. I will give each group a gift. It
is for you to find out what is inside
the gift. You will work together in
each group to do what is inside the
gift. As you finish doing it, your
group leader will write the result on
the board. The first group to write
the correct answer wins and will
receive a reward.”

“When you receive the gift, do not

open it yet, wait for my
instruction.”

(The teacher will give each group a

gift.)

“Are all groups ready?” “Yes sir.”

“At the count of three, all groups

will open the gift. Ready, 1, 2, 3.
Open your gifts!” (Each group will open their gift and begin
doing what is inside the gift.)

Problem inside the gift:

One day, Bentong, Onyok, and
Dagul buy a big pizza. Before they
ate the pizza, they try to find its
area. The pizza has a radius of 10
m. What do you think is the area of
the pizza got by them? Answer: 314 m2

(If there’s already a winner, the

teacher will give the reward to the
winner.)

Valuing:
“Did you enjoy the activity?” “Yes sir.”

“What makes you enjoy the

activity” “I enjoy the activity because it is challenging.”
“I enjoy the activity because our group won.”

(The teacher will teach the Scotch

Tape clap to the pupils.)

(The teacher will let the pupils give (Pupils will give the winner group a Scotch
the winner group a Scotch Tape Tape clap.)
clap.)
(The teacher will teach the Indian
clap to the pupils.)

“Give yourselves an Indian Clap.” (Pupils will do the Indian clap.)

6. Generalization

“What is the formula in finding the

area of the circle?” “The formula is A=π x r2.”

“Very good!”
