14.0 Service and Appearance Care

**Caution**
Cleaning products can be hazardous. Some are toxic. Others can burst into flame
if you strike a match or if they contact a hot part of the vehicle. Some are
dangerous if you breathe their fumes in a dosed space. When you use anything in
a container to clean your vehicle, be sure to follow the instructions. And always
open your doors or windows when you’re cleaning the inside. Never use these to
clean your vehicle: Gasoline, Benzene, Naphtha, Carbon Tetrachloride, Acetone,
Acetone, Paint Thinner, Turpentine, Lacquer Thinner, and Nail Polish Remover.

Caution – these cleaning agents can be all hazardous-some more than others-and
they can all damage your vehicle.
1. Care of the fiberglass body panels
Suggested maintenance includes periodic inspection and regular cleaning
with mild soap and water. Although these are other cleaning solutions
available, some of the them contain solvents and other chemicals that can
attack the high strength materials used in manufacturing. It is the customer’s
responsibility to ensure that cleaning solutions are compatible with these
materials. Graffiti removing cleaners often contain acetone, ether, lacquer
thinner or other solvents known to destroy the high strength properties of
many engineering plastics and use of these cleaners must be avoided.
2. Windows
Glass – The glass should be clean often. To remove normal tobacco smoke
and dust films, a liquid household glass cleaner should be sufficient. It is wise
not to use abrasive cleaners on glass due to the fact it may cause scratches.
Cleaning the outside of the Windshield and wiper blades- if the windshield is
not clear after using he windshield washer, or if the wiper blade chatters when
running, wax or other material may be on the blade or windshield. The
outside of the windshield may be cleaned with windshield cleaner. The
windshield is clean if beads do not form when you rinse it with water. Clean

the blade by wiping vigorously with a cloth soaked in full strength washer
solvent. Then rinse the blade with water.

3. Exterior Graphics and paint

the paint composition. It is the customer’s responsibility to ensure that
cleaning solutions are compatible with this material
4. Fiberglass Repair
It is recommended that any repair necessary to the fiberglass structure be
done by a body repair professional. Minor damage left unattended can create
major problems later. Inspect all exterior surfaces frequently and take care to
maintain it for peak performance.

Recommended Cleaning Procedures For Fabric seats

1. Treat spots and stains promptly, to prevent any damage to the fabric and
facilitate easy cleaning. Blow wet spills with an absorbent paper towel or
cloth. If the spill has crusted, tap the spot to break up the encrustation
and remove as much as possible before using a cleaning agent.
2. Try to determine the nature of the stain so the appropriate cleaning agent
can be chosen.

3. Use the least amount of the appropriate cleaning agent necessary to

remove the stain. Too much moisture leads to quicker re-soiling and
damages the component materials. Be sure to dry the fabric thoroughly
after each step of treatment to prevent resoling.
4. Spot the fabric with cold water to determine if fabric has been treated with
a fluorocarbon protected. Follow this procedure:
i. Blow the stained area with a clean dampened cloth (water only)
Dry thoroughly and check for stain.
ii. If still stained, repeat spot cleaning using a dry cleaning type
solvent such as dichloromethane.
iii. If stain persists, repeat procedure using the appropriate
cleaning agent for the suspected content of the stain as shown
in the chart opposite
If the cold water is absorbed by the fabric, this indicates that the
fabric is not fluorocarbon protected and should be handled as
follows:
1. Wet entire cushion panel with a clean damp cloth to see if
the stain can be removed by water alone.
2. If not successful, professional cleaning is advised. The
Bane-Clean system, including cleaner/vacuum extractor
and specialized cleaning agents, was found to be effective
in cleaning polypropylene upholstery.

Vinyl Cleaning Guide

Vinyl coated fabrics are perhaps the most maintenance-free fabrics ever
produced and certainly will provide exceptional service life if given proper care.
Almost all vinyl manufacturers now provide information concerning the necessary
cleaning procedures for their products. In reality, all care and maintenance
instructions are the same for all coated fabrics regardless of their manufacturing
origin.
i. Soil- A gentle mixture of any mild soap and warm water will generally
dissipate most common soil from the surface. Using a soft cloth, wash the
area to be cleaned and rinse. If stubborn dirt remains, as a stain
imbedded in the grain of the vinyl, use a soft brush, and if necessary, a
touch of cleaning powder. In both situations, rinse and dry with a soft
cloth.
ii. GUM- Remove all chewing gum possible prior to the applications of
Naphtha or Kerosene, worked in with a soft cloth. If gum cannot be
removed, ice may be used to harden the gum so that it separates itself
from vinyl surfaces. (This same method is also useful in removing wax.)
iii. INK SPOTS- You must work quickly! Magic Marker, India ink, and ball
point immediately will affect pigments and, for the most part, are difficult to
remove. It is recommended that a solution of water and rubbing alcohol
be applied and gently rubbed on the spot as soon as possible. Hair
sprays, containing alcohol, are sometimes effective in emergencies for
removing ink.
iv. NAIL POLISH & POLISH REMOVER – These products will immediately
damage vinyl surfaces, and to retard further damage, should be carefully
wiped clean.
v. PAINT- Try to remove as soon as possible. It is not recommended that
any paint removers, or brush cleaners, be used. Clean oil based paint
with soft clean cloth and Naphtha. To clean Latex base paints, use the
same method as recommended for everyday soil.

vi. TAR, ASPHALT, ETC- Petroleum based products will stain all vinyls if
allowed to stand too long. Clean as soon as possible with cloth followed
by immediate application of Kerosene or Naphtha.

Products are now on the market those are manufactured to enhance the beauty
and service life of all vinyl. However, by using the methods described above with
minimal care and attention, the consumer should enjoy years of satisfaction and
