DETAILS OF SITE VISIT

There were 2 main sections at the site:

A. Laboratory
B. Plant and Control Room

A. LABORATORY :-

In the lab , we started with what is concrete? To which students answered that it is a
mixture of cement, aggregate, water and addmixtures.
Then we saw the samples of different types of aggregates, GGBS , Flyash and other
ingredients of concrete.
Then we saw the samples of different types of concretes:
1. Colourcon- It is a coloured concrete available in available in wide pallette of
fascinating colours with customized shades made being available.
2. Litecon- It is a light weight concrete for non load bearing structures produced
by distributing foam bits in an uniform manner throughout a precisely designed
concrete. It has a density ranging from 500kg/cu.m and above.
3. Glowcon
4. Duracon
5. Décor

Also students were taken to laboratory where all kinds of tests are performed on fresh as well as
hardened concrete which gave them practical structural knowledge, the laboratory in charge gave
in depth .knowledge about concrete and various lab tests.
C. Plant and Control Room

We started with the basic procedure that is required to produce Ready Mix Concrete(RMC).
We saw the Weighing Jack and then we proceeded to see the stored raw materials.

1. Coarse and Fine Aggregates

Coarse aggregates of 20mm size were used for its manufacture and for
fine aggregates, river sand is generally is used but it is banned in Mumbai
and hence artificial sand, manufactured in crushers is used.

We observed that effective efforts were taken to combat pollution caused

due aggregates. The site there used sprinklers to prevent flying of dust.

2. Cement

Ordinary Portland Cement of 53 grade was stored in silos of capacity

90MT.

3. Addmixtures

GGBS and Flyash were also stored in silos near the cement silo.

Procedure to Produce RMC:

MANUFACTURING PROCESS OF READY MIXED CONCRETE

1. Insert raw material namely fine aggregate and coarse aggregate stored where as cement is
stored in silos

2. Water and admixtures are stored in tanks. The insert raw materials are fed to batching plant
mixer by means of an aggregate belt conveyor.

3. The required quantity cement is extracted by screw conveyor and fed into the mixer.

4. Water and admixture are pumped into the mixer by weight. After the mixing is completed, the
ready mixed concrete is discharges into the transit mixer which can then transport the concrete to
the construction site

5. All the above operations are controlled by a computer housed in the control room of the
batching plant.
After the manufacture, the concrete should be placed within 3 hours or else the concrete desired
results are not obtained . It should also be transported in a proper concrete mixer or else it sets.
The general capacity of concrete mixer is 6 cu.m.

Finally, we went to the control room, where we saw how the entire manufacturing process is
controlled with respect to quality and quantity.

CONCLUSION :

From this visit, students understand the importance of water to cement ratio, compaction,
segregation and bleeding when concrete falls from the certain height. We gained more
knowledge on Concrete Technology application aside from the theoretical aspect learned from
the classrooms and laboratory. The students got practical knowledge and experience of the plant
management system, which will be beneficial for them in the near future.
