Hi Cam. Latest crap, this time from the APPA.

Have deleted the “to” here as it would be fairly obvious who the email came from.

Just a bit of background. My wife is on the (new) BOT of our local school. She did not vote for the
“deferment”. The rest of the board are being pushed around by the Principal who is past his best by date,
and can’t be bothered changing. I am convinced that his actions are more motivated by politics than
anything else.

Cheers, Rik.

Boards Taking Action Coalition

November 4, 2011

Dear Boards of Trustees Members and Principals

Yesterday 225 School Boards of Trustees took decisive action in announcing that they will defer setting
student achievement targets against National Standards in 2011. This is a significant watershed with
regards to the National Standards policy.

This action has had widespread coverage in the media.

We are tremendously proud of the courage of the Boards and Principals in this group. They have judged that
the flaws with these Standards are so serious that it warrants strong and decisive action.

But because this initiative was an independent and informal one, many school communities may not have
had the opportunity to join us.

Over the course of yesterday our coalition, Boards Taking Action, was contacted by a further 15 schools
keen to make known their position by joining this initiative. In 24 hours the total has grown from 225 to 240
Boards.
There is an immediate opportunity to demonstrate to the Minister of Education that it is not 225 Boards of
Trustees that hold concerns but many, many more.

We aim to demonstrate again in the weeks ahead that the initial group of 225 Boards is only the tip of the
iceberg.

There are two options for you as a Board to consider.

Option 1

Expressing 'no confidence' in the Standards, urging the Minister to engage in rebuilding the Standards in
partnership with the sector and to work together for an outcome widely endorsed by the sector, with the
action of your school deferring setting student achievement targets against National Standards in 2011.

Or

Option 2

Expressing 'no confidence' in the Standards and urging the Minister to engage in rebuilding the Standards in
partnership with the sector and to work together for an outcome widely endorsed by the sector.

Please be aware that Boards are required to set student achievement targets against National Standards for
2011. The Ministry of Education suggests that charters should be sent to Ministry in February but the end of
2011 is the date set in the legislation

We have attached a copy of these options as resolutions for your Board to consider at its November meeting.

We encourage you to join the group of Boards supporting Option 1 as this is a strong action. Option 2 is
provided for those Boards that do not feel able to support the action in Option 1 at this time but want to
express their concern.

If you are in any doubt about the growing depth of concern about these Standards or the positive momentum
then please read this morning's editorial in the New Zealand Herald.

Your positive and speedy response to this invitation may well be the tipping point.

Please also find attached a letter regarding this initiative that you are welcome to table at your November
Board meeting.

Finally, thank you for giving this opportunity due consideration. Now is the time to act. Nothing will be
achieved without the strongest possible coalition of concern regarding this critical issue for our children.

Do not hesitate to contact us at any stage should you wish to discuss any aspect of this opportunity as we
work to ensure the very best education for our youngsters.

Yours sincerely

Jane Forrest Perry Rush
