The purpose of education is to prepare as well as qualify people within society for work

in the economy. Besides, it can teach the morals and values of the community. Various acts are

enacted to improve education through assessments. The paper discusses how the passage of

NCLB and RTTT increased accountability and high stake testing.

The Passage of “No Child Left Behind” (NCLB)

The act was one of the reform bills of education considered a landmark. The law has

introduced several changes in the education sector across the country. It affected how students

were taught as well as the test they take. Also, the training of teachers is included in the act. The

law ensured accountability of schools. Besides, schools were compelled or rather forced to

design an accountability system. The system was based on the assessment of students. The test

scores were to be made public. Besides, schools received a passing or non-passing grade. It

depended on the yearly progress of their students. Therefore, teachers were held accountable for

the performance of their students. Additionally, it improved accountability through restricted

funding to various states that underperformed (Early 31).

Race to the Top (RTTT)

It marked a historic period in American education. President Obama introduced the law

to establish an environment of educational excellence (Early 58). The initiative involved the

government improving teaching as well as learning in the United States’ schools. The

government provided some amount of money to improve the education sector. However, schools

must meet various conditions in order to get the grant. The requirements included the evaluation

of teachers based on performance. Besides, common standards were adopted. It was a way of

improving accountability. Teachers had to take responsibility. Moreover, the schools had to

perform in order to receive the grant.

In conclusion, NCLB and RTTT promoted accountability and high stakes. RTTT required

performance-based evaluation for the grant. NCLB compelled teachers to design an

accountability system. Also, the system focused on the performance of students.
