Mission Statement
Our mission at the Julia Landon College Preparatory and Leadership Development School is to
create college bound students with a deep commitment to public service and a true understanding
of their leadership skills within the global community.
Course Overview
Algebra I is a course, which involves the structure and properties of the systems of real numbers.
Problem solving techniques for various types of real world and algebraic problems are
developed. Equations, inequalities, graphs, radicals, polynomials, and functions are some of the
topics that will be simply yet thoroughly treated. Successful completion of this course is based
on student organization, class work, test performance, projects, Gizmos, Compass Odyssey, and
a team effort.
Educational Materials
Algebra 1 Glencoe McGraw-Hill (available online), 3 ring binder, pencils, notebook paper, graph
paper, dividers
Student Evaluation
Grades are based on a total points system and are subject to vary based on the amount of tests,
quizzes, projects, homework assignments, class work, bell ringers, exit slips, Compass Odyssey,
Gizmos, and computer lab that we have during a particular quarter. Extra credit is available only
to the entire class, not individually. Grade Point Average (GPA) = Total points earned ÷Total
points possible
For each day absent, an equal number of days are allowed to complete make-up assignments.
Assignments submitted after the allotted make-up time will be considered “late work.” For each
day an assignment is turned in after the due date, 5% of the total points will be deducted from the
students’ grade. For example, if a student turns in an assignment worth 50 points 2 days after the
due date, 5 points will be deducted from the students’ final score (5% x 2 days late = 10% off
total point value, 10% x 50 = 5 points deducted).
Tutoring Schedule
I am available after school on Mondays and Tuesdays from 2:10 – 3:30 P.M. The students
should set up an appointment in advance with me personally. The students needs to provide at
least a 24 hour notice, have transportation home, and be picked up promptly.
Grading Scale
Students will be evaluated in accordance with the standard Duval County Public Schools’
grading scale.
Progress Reports
In addition to report cards issued at the end of each quarter, students will receive school progress
reports. Students earning a grade of “D” or “F” on a progress report will be required to return
the progress report signed by the parent/guardian within two days.
Diversity
Every child will be treated equally regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, religion, sexual
orientation, or intellectual ability. Prejudice or discrimination of any kind will not be tolerated in
my classroom.
Other Information
Please refer to the Parent and Student Handbook for information on guidance services, parent
visitation, attendance, morning tardy policy, dress code, and more.
Binder Requirements – Binders must be brought to class each day. This will be graded bi-
weekly. Binders must be in the following order: FCAT Reference Sheet, Course Curriculum
Paper, Divider #1 Bell Ringers/ Exit Slips, Divider #2 Notes/ Class work/ Homework, Divider
#3 Test/ Quizzes/ Projects, Divider #4 Compass Odyssey and Gizmo Logs. All papers must
have your full name, number, date, and assignment in the upper right hand corner of all pages.
Classroom Behavior Policy
To maintain a positive and effective learning environment for all students, I expect students to
behave appropriately by following the established rules and procedures of the classroom and
school. Most importantly, every student must show respect for one another and their property. If
a student makes inappropriate choices, there will be consequences for those choices. Please refer
to the student handbook for a more detailed listing of the school discipline procedures.
Classroom Agreement
Student Expectations
1. Respect others – show respect to the teacher, classmates, the classroom, and yourself.
2. Be prepared and on time – come to class with all supplies (paper, PENCIL, binder,
graph paper).
3. Follow directions the first time they are given – all directions and procedures will be
clearly written and/or explained to you.
4. Stay on task – Work on math in math class. If you finish your class work, get to work
on your homework. If you finish your homework, review for an upcoming test, work on a
project, organize your notebook, etc.
Teacher Expectations
Consequences
If you choose to break our Classroom Agreement, your consequences are as follows (within one
period):
Second offense: Time out (student will be placed at an individual desk close to the
teacher and must complete a written reflection on his or her
behavior)
Third offense: A pink slip will be issued (the accumulation of any 3 pink slips
from the team within a quarter results in a team after
school detention). In addition, the student will fill out a behavior
action plan, which has the student explain how he/she broke the
classroom rule and the steps they will take so they
do not break the rule again. This must be taken home to be signed
by his or her parents.
*Depending on the severity of the offense, consequences may not occur in this order.
Rewards
Praise (daily)
Positive Notes Home (random)
Free Homework Pass/ Drop a Quiz Pass – You will receive a “Grade A” card which
will be punched each time you receive an A on a quiz, project, or test. When you have
filled up the card, you can exchange it for a free Homework Pass or a Drop a Quiz pass
(teacher reserves the right to limit the assignments for which a Homework Pass can be
utilized).
Certificates of Recognition – The teacher and other students may fill out nomination
forms for a “Certification of Recognition” when a student has accomplished something
exceptional. These could be for an act of kindness, a grade on a test, superior behavior,
etc.
Music – classes without any behavior issues during the class period may choose to listen
to music provided by the teacher during independent work sessions.
PROCEDURES FOR SUCCESS
Procedures are how we stay organized in our classroom. Following these procedures will
help you be successful in this class. You will not be punished if you do not follow a procedure.
However, you will be reminded of the correct procedure and asked to "redo" the procedure,
while correctly displaying the appropriate behaviors.
1. How should I enter the classroom?
You should enter the classroom at zero level, sit in your assigned seat, and begin the daily
bell work assignment that will be posted on the board. This will always be individual
work, unless otherwise stated.
2. How do I make up work when I have missed?
When you are absent from my class, check the absent folder for any handouts or papers
you might need. Make sure you copy any notes and bell ringers from the master notebook
or group members, and sign up for missed quizzes and/or tests on the make up day sign up
sheet. It is your responsibility to inquire about and make up missed work. If you have
questions or need assistance with the assignment, you need to speak with me after
class.
3. How do I behave when there is a visitor or phone call?
When there is a visitor or phone call, remain patient and at zero level until I can return
to the lesson.
4. What should I bring to class each day?
Make sure you bring your notebook, paper, graph paper, and a pencil to class each day.
These should be on top of your desk. All other materials should be stored under your
chair.
5. How do I behave during school announcements?
When announcements are made over the intercom, you should stop working
immediately and listen. After the announcement is over, resume what you were
working on.
6. What do I put on assignments that I am turning in for your class?
Each assignment should contain the following in the top right hand corner of the page:
First and Last Name, Student Number (circled)
Today's Date
Class Period
Title of Assignment
7. How do I turn in my assignments in your class?
When turning in assignments (UNLESS told otherwise) ALL papers will be passed to the
assigned "paper collector" at your table. This person will then place the assignments in
your period’s tray.
8. What if I need to use the restroom during the class session?
Each quarter you will be given two exit slips. It is your responsibility to use them wisely.
However, if you have not used them at the end of the quarter you will be awarded one
homework pass. Only one student may use the restroom at a time. He or she should
sign out when leaving the classroom and sign in when re-entering the classroom.
9. How should I leave the classroom?
When the bell rings at the end of class, stay quiet and remain seated until the teacher
dismisses you. Check the area around your seat, and make sure it is clean. Push your
chair in as you leave. Line up in a single file line at zero level.
10. How do I know the teacher wants my attention?
When I need the class's attention, I will say, "Give me five." This means I want you to
give me the five following things:
1. Stop what you are doing
2. Eyes on me.
3. Turn your body towards me.
4. Listen.
5. Hands should be empty.
11. How do I get the teacher’s attention?
Please raise your hand and wait to be recognized BEFORE speaking or getting out of
your seat. Do not leave your seat with out the teacher’s permission.
12. When is it okay to sharpen my pencil?
Pencils should be sharpened at the beginning of the period, during the Bell Ringer. You
may also sharpen your pencil during the work period of the lesson. There should never
be more than one person at the pencil sharpener at a time. You MAY NOT sharpen your
pencil when the teacher is in the front of the room teaching.
13. How should I behave in my cooperative group?
We are teammates in this classroom; a community of learners. This means we are all
committed to the success of ourselves and our classmates. If you need help with a
question, discuss it with your group first. If a group member is having difficulty, help
him or her as best you can. If you are still unable to figure out the question, one person
in your group may raise his or her hand to get help from the teacher. This does not
mean that we should share all of our work with our group members. Explaining a
process or a solution is not the same thing as allowing a classmate to copy your work.
You are responsible for YOUR OWN work. Cheating will not be tolerated in our
classroom. It will result in a zero for the assignment for both students involved.
14. What should I do if I finish my work early?
If you finish your class work, get to work on your homework. If you finish your
homework, review for an upcoming test, work on a project, organize your notebook,
etc.
15. What if I don’t have my homework or didn’t bring necessary materials to class?
You MUST fill out a “ticket.” This must be taken home and signed by your
parent/ guardian. After the accumulation of three “tickets,” a phone call home will be
made.
Thank you for taking the time to carefully read this packet of
information. Your child will keep it in the front of his or her
Language Arts binder.
I have read this packet of information and agree to abide by its policies. If I have any questions,
I will contact Mrs. Lundsten as soon as possible.
I understand that developing good work habits now will promote continued academic and future
workplace success. This means using an assignment notebook, completing homework to the best
of my ability, studying, and bringing all of the necessary materials to class daily. I understand
that I am must be an active participant in my own learning, putting forth my best effort at all
times.
