1.1
1.1.1 Baseline assessment – is used by the educator to observe what knowledge the learners
have about the subject and what they need to know before they start learning a new topic.
This will provide the educator with the information needed about what the learner needs in
terms of learning. For example: using prior knowledge questions.
1.1.2 Formative assessment- this involves assessing learners and observing what they need
in the process of learning and providing those particular learners with the assessment that
will be best suitable for them based on their learning style. For example: using pictures for
learners who best understand through visual material.
1.1.3 Summative assessment- it is all/different assessment activities given to the learner to
determine his/or her performance. For example: giving the learner a class test and giving
feedback to the learner, parent and the principal about the learner’s performance or
recording it.
1.1.4 Diagnostic assessment- it is when the educator focusses on finding the learners
problems or where he/she needs help in order to assist that particular learner. For example:
finding the topic that the learner does not understand and discussing that particular topic
with the learner and giving remedial activities.
1.1.5 Recognition of prior learning assessment- this refers to the ability of formal movement
from one learning area or institution to another. For example: a learner who passed a
subject at a previous institution can be credited for it at another institution.

Advantage
- They allow for the discovery of mistakes and difficulties experienced by learners to
be discovered.
Disadvantage
- The abilities of the learners cannot be fully evident as the examination stresses
selected topics.
1.2.2 Essay
Advantage
- It has the ability to assess all levels of learning outcomes
Disadvantage
- Marking for feedback can be time consuming

Advantage
- It can provide learners with the opportunity to develop their teamwork skills and
leadership.
Disadvantage
- Differences in the topics provided can affect reliability
1.2.4 Portfolio work
Advantage
- The different sources of feedback cab be used such as peers, self and tutors.
Disadvantage
- Learners may put more effort on the presentation rather than the subject at hand.
1.2.5 Group work
Advantage
- It can provide learners with the opportunity to develop their teamwork skills and
leadership.
Disadvantage
- Some learners might rely on others for the completion of the task and not gain
anything from it.

Question 4
A. 4.1 visual learners are the ones who understand and learn best whereby the
information is communicated to them visually. This particular learners learn best
when they see the information, this helps them visualise the different topics or
concepts that are taught.
This particular learners can learn best from: making mind maps, copying information
from the board, using flash cards, writing and re-writing notes and also from
photographs.
Diagnostic assessment will be suitable for this type of learner as the learner as the
educator will be able to identify the learning difficulties of the learner in order to give
assistance where it is needed.
B. Auditory learners are the ones who learn best when the information is
communicated to them in an auditory style. This particular learners learn best when
they hear the information that is being communicated to them.
This kind of learners will best learn when they: participate in the classroom, listen to
recording that they have made, explaining the topic to their peers and also listening
to music.
Diagnostic assessment will be suitable for this type of learner as the learner as the
educator will be able to identify the learning difficulties of the learner in order to give
assistance where it is needed.
C. Kinaesthetic learners are those who best understand when the information being
communicated is presented to them in a kinaesthetic manner. The learners best
understand the concepts being communicated using their hands or bodies.
Kinaesthetic learners learn best when they: study in a place that they feel
comfortable, experiments, giving demonstrations and participation in physical
activities.
Formative assessment will be suitable as this will give the educator an opportunity to
make necessary changes in the process of learning in order to adapt the learner with
the suited activity.
4.2 Alternative assessments based on alternative achievement standards-
For those learners who have a proper level of cognitive abilities. This type of assessment is
based on the topic that is covered in a certain grade but its complexity is altered to fit the
cognitive level of the learner.
Diagnostic assessment will be suitable for this type of learner as the learner as the educator
will be able to identify the learning difficulties of the learner in order to give assistance
where it is needed.
Alternative assessments based on modified Achievement Standards
This is designed for those learners who are disabled and who are working with content but
might need more time to get hold of that specific content. The content that this learners
work with is less difficult than that of those with significant cognitive levels.
Diagnostic assessment will be suitable for this type of learner as the learner as the educator
will be able to identify the learning difficulties of the learner in order to give assistance
where it is needed.
Alternative assessments based on grade level achievement standards
This is for students with disabilities who need assessment that is not included in the
assessment system or general assessment. This is for learners who show different formats or
abilities from those provided by the general assessment.
